I was on a vacation in Edmonton from January to April 2020. It definately took some time to get used to the very cold weather. And we actually managed to destroy a tire and rim hitting a pothole in the city. I liked the place, even tho i missed the hills and mountain views from back home. I still consider to move to Edmonton at some point, just because it's so affordable. But for now i'll sit out the crazy times and wait for the economy to bounce back up to hopefully get some better job offers.

I lived in Edmonton for more than 30 years. The primary con missed is that winters are long and cold. Early November till the end of March. And the temperature can drop below -30 C for weeks. Dress warm! Maintain that furnace. A pro not mentioned, you shouldn’t need central air.
@PatrickFieldsRE3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, where did you move to? Those are both correct and I'm putting together 2 more videos about things I love and hate (strongly dislike) about the city! Let me know if you have anything else to add! 😃

@@PatrickFieldsRE Three different places: Ottawa, Waterloo and now South Georgian Bay. Another pro that occurs to me is that there are several surrounding small communities within an easy commute. Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Devon, Leduc, etc. If you like living in a smaller community but want the amenities of a big city, these places are attractive. And real estate there is even more reasonably priced. Another pro is that sand is used on roads in winter instead of salt. As a consequence, car bodies tend not to rust as easily. A con, if you’re an astronomy nerd, is perpetual twilight in spring and summer. It never really gets dark for much of the warm seasons. This is a pro for some. The long days in summer mean you can play a round of golf and still see what you’re doing at 10:00 PM. The flip side is long nights in winter.

I love a sunny place - get some solar panels and let the sun make energy. It is nice to live where there is a good sense of community, and people who look out for one another. Car swallowing potholes, mosquitoes and no ocean is a negative -- but I could live with a 75 pigeon limit.
@PatrickFieldsRE4 жыл бұрын
We are just starting to have more homes use solar panels, it is a big cost though - so you have to be dedicated to live in that home for at least 10 years before you see any return from it I think. I am actually ok with only 75 pigeons, lol... Thanks so much for watching!

2 things from the Cons list you forgot to mention: 1) The city actually has a pest control department that sprays for mosquitoes in low spots. Unless you live nestled right up against long grass or low spots, you're unlikely to encounter many of these critters - at least in my experience. 2) I can't find the link anymore but awhile back Edmonton was actually voted the city with the best traffic flow for cities of it's size. Rush hour traffic is much worse in Calgary, which isn't built nearly as well as Edmonton is despite the fact it's close to the size of Edmonton.

Get an Edmonton Oilers jersey . The local Hockey team. And don't b shy about putting one of the stars that played on the team in the 1980's on the back of the jersey ( Gretzky , Messier , Anderson , heck even Doug Weight ! ) 95% of Oiler fans have #97 Mcdavid or #29 Draisaitl . Two unbelievably talented players ...but this franchise has a long storied history . Ryan Smyth is a good choice too .

I have been here since I was born. Edmonton is full of diversity. But people in this city have some attitude. I have lived right beside low income areas and 1 dangerous neighborhood, and trust me when I say this. White people don’t understand what street life is like. I grew up spending most of my time on them and I can say I have never seen a white gang here 😂. I am native, and if I walk by a cop they always keep their hand right next to their gun. So yes, depending how you spend your time your experience will vary. But be prepared to see a LOT of Filipinos
@UnknownUser-xb1mp3 жыл бұрын
@@mark3960 most of the west and southside is "gangland" you wouldnt believe the experiences i had. ive been beat with a pipe just for walking in the wrong area of my own neighborhood. last year someone was stabbed and bled out in that same area i got beat. people get assaulted there constantly and people rubbing feces on my car cuz they mad at me. people smashing windows, breaking into schools, constantly armed. i seen that, so u may think where u from is bad. try livin here. my father OD'ed on caine and schizo pills for a disorder he got from doing drugs too young. i used to live downtown and we had hookers walking up and down the alley behind my house everyday. while in that same house someone stole our rv. in april of this year a black kid got beat by a group of racist kids while they threw slurs at him. in edmonton we seen it all. now i live on the westside, have been for a while and we got that same problem. edmonton isnt what everyone thinks it is. Most people just live they 9 to 5 life and dont experience nothing. now i aint saying where u from aint bad. but u just talkin bout how edmonton dont got problems like ontario. nah, its just as bad here. if not worse

@@mark3960 it can be. u got low income right beside the million dollar houses here. there aint no in between. i know u being sarcastic when u sayin that. but no i aint describing LA cuz they got it worse than we do. but i just tell it how it is. as a native person these problems with the community are far more pressing for my people rather than white people. probably the only reason u takin like this a joke. like i said in the original comment, it depends how u spend ur time here to see what its really like, when u see what a minority has to go through u wont be laughing bout this. a white person could walk outside and see a rough neighborhood and not know where they are until they see what people doing there. but when i walk out my door, i look around, i know what it is. the look people give me, the way they talk and act. i understand where i am. you probably wont ever have the experiences i have cuz ur people dont try to forget and push away the pain of their actions and what was done to them. u think u know whats goin on, how can u joke about a place u never been to? how is it that a white cop can look at me and already have his hand on his gun before i even started to talk to talk to him? you dont have to worry about whether or not you gon have a group of people comin to beat ur a** over a beef with they cousin years ago. ur family aint gone through residential schools, they aint have to deal with substance abuse but you still try and talk about my life like its a joke. this is all real to me, its somethin i gotta live with. so how can you talk about my life like this? i got it worse than you, its just finally starting to get better, these things that happened to me shaped me into who i am today. but you gotta talk about it like it aint nuthin. why is that? how is that?
@UnknownUser-xb1mp3 жыл бұрын
@@mark3960 ok, i re read everything and i admit i got carried away, i just read it different then u intended. so i will give u advice. alberta can have jobs that make lots of money, but most of that gets taken from us by Trudeau and he just gives it to Quebec so he gets voted in again. the equalization payments can get kinda crazy over here, and so can the income tax, etc. if you want to live somewhere peaceful where u can still keep most of your money i would live somewhere on the eastern side of canada under Treudeau's power. money wont be as tight. there is very little people in P.E.I and a house for the middle class can go for 200k average. you probably wont have a whole lot to do there community wise. but with there being less people prices will most likely stay low. thats my recommendation. but with this election trudeau aint really saying anything, just watch his response to school vote, watch another candidates response and u can tell he most likely wont get in. especially with all the shots everyone is taking at him. if PC gets in (which i hope it does) western canada will finally have money in they pockets again and then u might wanna move here. but if green party getting in they talkin bout a better safety net for canada (which we all know would get abused) which could help with housing for you and your wife. with free secondary education being offered by green and NDP. if one of them gets in any kids u do have wont have a problem with getting a good job if they put in the effort. but with them being as left wing as they are i would stay on the eastern side of canada.

Hi friend what’s Edmonton Calgary Canada like is it worth the move and the cold weather outside and inside. Can we choose the course and the cost of living each house would be very expensive and to keep warm in the winter months and the food I am a vegan vegetarian so I would suggest what to eat the cost of living each time each person shops at Edmonton Calgary Canada shops and restaurants and shops bars all the stuff we need I live in the UK ok. All matters and the difference in diversity and the cultural nature. It’s beautiful scenes and the jobs. Mainly the cost of living crisis. It’s very expensive and warm but is it worth it.

Thanks for providing this valuable information. Can you please tell me whether the land area of Edmonton is flat or hilly (Slope) . I am considering to more to Alberta but I want to live in a city which is flat like the ones in Saskatchewan. Thank you
@PatrickFieldsRE3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! That is a great question, Edmonton is generally flat but we do have a wonderful river that runs through the city and there are 11 bridges that connect the city from side to side. The hilliest areas would be going up or down some of the hills to cross the bridges. Edmonton is quite similar to Saskatoon in that regard. Hope this helps, Edmonton is an AMAZING place to live!

@PatrickFieldsRE3 жыл бұрын
Hi Giovanni, thanks for watching the video, that is a great question! Personally I like Edmonton more, I have been to Calgary many times but never lived there though. I find their traffic is worse than here, it can be confusing to get around too. Housing and cost of living is a bit more there. U of A is fantastic, we see so many people from around the world come to Edmonton to get degree's! Enjoy whichever you choose and study hard! 😀 Stay safe and well!

Id say Edmonton is a bit more cultured , has a beautiful river valley with parks that Calgary can't compete with . And because Calgary sits at a much higher elevation than Edmonton , the summer overnights can get very , very chilly . Calgarians will tell you that they get these wonderful chinooks in the winter , which can b quite pleasant . But the reality is there is really only a few a year .

My family has been in Edmonton for 4 generations now; long time I suppose. Typically Edmonton has a reputation for being a blue collar city. The downtown is generally dead after work hours, and the city centre mall manages to get exponentially worse over time. After covid I don't know what will save Edmonton. The urban sprawl is another pet peeve, and property taxes are becoming unaffordable for some. If you want to get in to mature neighborhoods closer to the core and the river Valley, now is probably time to get in while the market slows down a bit.
@PatrickFieldsRE4 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thank-you for your comment, I am not sure how I missed it! I am a bit newer to Edmonton, but my wife's family has been here for 4 generations as well! I think Edmonton will be ok after Covid, we will fare better than Calgary and Ft Mac for sure. We are lucky to have so much land and be spread out, it is an easy city to navigate unless you get into a newer community with named streets, trust me traffic in Vancouver was mad!! It is definitely tough to get a decent place close to the core or the river valley trails. Stay safe & take good care!! 👍

Actually Edmonton has it all. Night life is great in Edmonton The night life days are Thursday, Friday and Saturday Edmonton is big on Latin dance There are about 8 Latin dance schools in Edmonton and Thursday is the Latin dance party at OTR bar. There are many sport bars in Edmonton. Restaurants and food are a big pro for Edmonton . For example there is a Libyan cousin restaurant in Edmonton which you only find two or three counties who have a Libyan restaurant out side of Libya one of them is Canada and only in Edmonton. Also there is la carraia which is a Florence Italy gelato cafe and this gelateria is the only la carraia outside of Italy. One of the top 10 burger place in Canada is YEG located in Edmonton

@Patric Fields Very nice video,quite sincere, but you have not mentioned anything about public transit in Edmonton..for those that do not own a car..and what about job oportunities? Also..how do you explain that there are many comments and videos on U tube talking about people being depressed in Edm. because of lack of sunshine in winter..? According to what you say it rivals Calgary in being very sunny..but ..is it? And how would you compare these two cities? (p.s. I am from Vancouver,so I know very little about Edm.)
@PatrickFieldsRE4 жыл бұрын
Hello Joan, I should have discussed public transit - we have great bus service and an LRT system that they are in the works of expanding. It is great if you need to go downtown or to the University! I have not lived in Calgary so I can not comment on how we compare. I am not sure about the lack of sunshine, we get more than most cities in Canada!! Much more sunlight than Vancouver when it rains and rains and rains..... Hope you enjoyed it, please let me know if I can answer any other questions!

@DAVE ADAM Hello, Dave, thank you so much for your answers! Great feedback about safety and the city as a whole, i appreciate your comments. I ve read your other comment to someone about the Festivals in Ed., very interesting! And yes, the Ed. Mall is famous.. I ve seen many videos of it.. Some people love and some hate, like with all such places, it is not for everyone, of course, but it is quite impressive. As for shopping, i meant more like supermarkets and Costco type stores, where person can buy anything necessary. It is great if those are accessible throught the city.. Thanks a lot for your comments, very helpful.. 😁👋👍

@DAVE ADAM Wow.. Thank you ever so much for such a detailed answer! I am looking at Edmonton videos because i am learning as much as I can about other, more affordable, Canadian cities, besides Vancouver.. At the moment we cannot afford to move out of Vancouver, and we like it where we are.. But it is important to know what our options would be in other cities.. I will definitely consider Edmonton, if we do decide to move after all this feedback.. Thank you, once again, for your response, all the best for you..

@PatrickFieldsRE4 жыл бұрын
Hello Anas, it would really depend on what exactly you had in mind for marketing and business. Everyone will be facing new and uncertain times ahead with the effects of Covid, low oil prices, different government tightening of budgets and effects of that (lower salaries for teachers, doctors, fire, police etc.) So hard to predict where we are going, some people will make millions while others lose their homes sadly....

Hello there, Edmonton is a great city and doesn't have quite the (night time) lifestyle like T.O. but is fantastic to raise a family or just reduce overall costs! I have helped 2 buyers in the past few months from Toronto that moved here for those reasons. I am not sure what is available for marketing jobs, but I did make a video with resources to find a job, here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKObk2OCnbp1bpY Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! 😀
@MultiCappie4 жыл бұрын
I love Edmonton, but if by "city lifestyle" you mean "something like Toronto", I'm afraid i would have to say no. It's improving really really fast, but on a scale of 1-10, where Toronto is "10" and Calgary is "5", Edmonton has just gone from about a *_minus six_* to about a "4" in the last 15 years. In another 15 years we should be about a solid "8". The thing in Edmonton is the disposable income. The cost of living vs. the income. This is a city where cashiers can buy condos. But if you are accustomed to the better sides of Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver, Edmonton is still a bit of a shock. That said, actually the live theatre in Edmonton is waaaayyyy better than you would expect. Maybe better than Toronto.
