Edmonton is a great city! Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta and is the northernmost city with over one million people on the continent. There are a lot of things that make Edmonton an interesting city to me that I'm excited to share in this video. In this video I briefly cover Edmonton's history, population, skyline as well as a few things that make it unique. Thanks for watching: Edmonton Overview | An informative introduction to Edmonton, Alberta.
CORRECTIONS
- Edmonton was named City of Champions due to the volunteer response to a tornado in 1987. The sporting success in the 1980s may have helped contribute to that nickname though.

As a Brit who lived in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary for work, I must say Edmonton is a very underrated city. A lot of people seem to think Calgary is better but I enjoyed living there more. Good community feel, very affordable for a major city and has everything you would expect in a major urban centre. Great hockey team and fans as well. I would put it top 3 for best food in Canada too. I miss Alberta.

Moved from Toronto to Edmonton last year. Edmonton definitely has a cold and long winter temperature-wise, but it is sunny all year round. Snow-storm is surprisingly rare, fogs none, rain rare, even cloudy days are rare. This is what I love most about this city.

Moved from Toronto to Edmonton 9 months ago. Super underrated city. One thing you didn't mention is how the people here are the friendliest in the country (only rivaled with the Maritimes). Whenever I go to Calgary, I get the same cold and shallow cooperate vibes I get when I lived in Toronto. In Edmonton (for the most part) you feel like you're in a "small town" of 1.4 million people and the communities here seem less "keeping up with the Jones" and more family oriented. Not that I dislike Calgary or Toronto. They're just more hustle and bustle type cities, whereas Edmonton gives you time to smell the roses. Great video!

Edmonton is amazing. And strangely underrated and known even amongst Canadians. Part of that is because it used to be a lot smaller, but has grown faster. Whereas Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal have been major metros for a century. Some fun facts: -youngest big city in Canada -only city with more millennials than Boomers. -used to be smaller than Hamilton and Winnipeg but in the last 50 years has become more than twice both of their sizes. (Although Hamilton is now growing faster). -Highest number of university students per capita of all big cities in canada. -2nd most days of sun of all cities -highest income to cost of living ratio in canada for cities. -Greener than Calgary, and an actually good hockey team too 😉

@@markospas a lot of people from Edmonton actually just live in ugly sprawling suburbs and never experience the city beyond the arterial roads and strip malls in their cookie cutter neighborhoods. People who live centrally and enjoy the river valley, food scene, and know how to make the most of winter have a great time. There’s a lot to love about our city. It’s got lots to work on still, but with its affordability, anyone hating on it is just choosing to be negative. People who say Edmonton is boring are wrong. They’re just boring people and will be bored wherever they live. They’ll just pay twice as much for it.

I had the amazing experience of living in Edmonton for 6 years. From 1990 to 1996. I was there for yet another win of the Stanley Cup and was blessed enough to touch it as they brought it through the crowd at the airport. I also worked at West Edmonton Mall. Amazing place highly recommend it for you bucket list. The waterpark there was a blast so many good memories. And I also was able to see the Northern Lights many times. So many amazing festivals. Especially enjoyed the Fringe and the Sour Dough Raft Race during Klondike Days. One big water fight on the North Saskatchewan River. The only bad memory I have of Edmonton is the -40 degree weather you can get in the mid winter. But other than that great memories and highly recommend this city. It is also one of the cleanest cities and friendliest cities in Canada :)

I lived in Edmonton for over 25 years before moving to Calgary for work. Edmonton had only had 30-ish story buildings because of it's proximity to the municipal airport. Buildings couldn't be taller than an airplane's glide slope. Now that the airport is closed, super tall skyscrapers are now possible. It's taken the city a while to finally build something tall. Unlike Calgary which has a height limit that results in buildings reaching the maximum height. I expect Edmonton will be getting taller buildings in the future, where as Calgary is unlikely to change it's height rules.

Edmonton is also home to the 3rd Canadian Division HQ, know as CFB Edmonton. This in one of the largest Canadian Army bases in Canada. Edmonton also served as a backup landing site for the NASA space shuttle. Edmonton also has a Broad Pedway system of tunnels and bridges that connect much of the downtown core so pedestrians dont have to go outside in the winter. Edmonton is an amalgamation of the cities of Edmonton, city of Strathcona and the town of Beverly, all seperate at one point. We also have River boats, Ski Hills, and near by beaches. Just to name a few other interesting points. Video could have been many times longer, You only scratched the surface

Edmonton has a fascinating history. One of the reasons why it was selected as the capital (and why it got the University) over Calgary was because of Alexander Rutherford, Alberta’s first Premier. Another part of that story I think is interesting is the political differences between the cities; Edmonton being usually more liberal (to varying degrees) and Calgary being quite conservative likely played a role since Liberal PM Wilfred Laurier had been elected the year before Alberta entered confederation and you’ll conclude who voted for him…
@Mrparkkila
@Mrparkkila 5 ай бұрын
@@seamusmuldrew5623 While that may be true today, the conservatives in Alberta only won 2 of the 25 seats in the first provincial election with the rest going to the Liberals. The Conservatives only won High River and Rosebud, not Calgary. And yes, many in the west voted for Laurier in the West starting in the 1896 Federal Election because of dissatisfaction with Eastern Canada and the Conservative government’s National Policy which they felt was exploitative.

Just a correction, the city of championship isn't to do with sports, although is a very common mistake. It's to do with the people and how they heroically helped each other in times of crisis particularly referring to a tornado in the 80s. It just coinsided with the Elks and Oilers winning streaks, which is why there is the confusion.

@alex35agm I'm not even a CFL fan because let's be real, it's a rip off of a rip off of an actual sport. That's said, those 14 titles are apparently nothing. Good to know. Also not the point of my comment to rile some child, so I'd appreciate you removing you comment for to keep the point propper

A quick correction, Edmonton is the 5th largest metro area not 6th, and Quebec City is around 7th or 8th as Ottawa behind Edmonton.

Wow, I always imagined Edmonton to be grim and kind of dirty. Granted, I've only been there 3 times for work and left so that wasn't a fair assessment at all. This video totally changes my perception of the city. I'll have to take a proper trip this summer for sure now that I live in Calgary.
@oldgregg9074
@oldgregg9074 Жыл бұрын
You would be wise to trust your original perception. Edmonton is a disgusting, rotting, crime ridden, miserable city that doesn’t come close to Calgary. You can have a pretty fun day or even weekend at the west Ed but there is nothing special about the rest of the city, and it’s not a safe and enjoyable place to explore. Watching a high definition compilation of pretty buildings and tourist attractions from a guy who’s never even been there should not change your perception on anything regarding that shit hole.

Lived here all my life. You can still pan gold in Gold Bar creek.. to this day, I can pull $50 out of the dirt in an afternoon. If you come to Edmonton, you really need to take a walk through the river valley. Unless you're not into nature, then I guess you could hit up the mall....

I live in Ontario and at the point in my life now it seems that perhaps western Canada would be a better place for me to live, I could liquidate a smaller property here and buy a larger property overlooking the rockies in Alberta if I wanted to, the natural beauty in western Canada is unrivalled. I could continue my work over there as well, but its leaving family that's hard but I think of past ancestors who left Europe for a better more prosperous life in Canada.

Possible, but property overlooking the rockies is big, big bucks now, especially around Calgary. I remember when Canmore was affordable. Not anymore. Perhaps if you were west of Edmonton in the Hinton area. Very beautiful but fairly isolated. On the plus side it's not far from the National Park and Jasper is a great little resort town not too far away.

You did a good job and while you can't mention everything, three defining features of Edmonton that you didn't mention were Refinery Row on the east side, the views and recreation opportunities of the wide river valley, and the weather. I have lived in Edmonton several times and much prefer it to Calgary. The best thing in Calgary are the mountains which - of course - are an hour's drive away.
