Great tips! I would add Saturation to the list which can help gain 2-4db by adding harmonics and trimming peaks.

Why dont you use a lowpass on the kick and bass? I wouldnt think we want some of those higher frequencies as they can interfere with leads?

Will this is so helpful. Thanks very much for the tips. I see that on Live's stock compressor there is a 'make up' button and a wet/dry control. I wonder whether the option of mixing the dry signal with the compressed one is, in effect, parallel processing?

Haha, nice! Good job then, I love the way you processed the M1 organ. Sounds really nice and punchy, tho without the annoying high frequencies. Any tips how to get my organ to sound similar? Is it the actual M1, or replica sound through another vst? And what ratio did you use for compression and eq and so on? It just sounds so nice :)

It's actually a sample from a Vengeance pack, and if I recall correctly I dialled in a short decay and quieter sustain to get the "punch", then EQ'ed out below about 120hz and duplicated the riff with a sub bass with similar ADSR settings. Very light compression just to glue those two sounds together. Hope this helps!

Anyways, couple problems with this: 1. You don't always need to "tune" your kicks as some of them don't actually ever stay at a particular note for long enough. In those cases, and really just with "tuning" kicks in general, transposing should be done by ear. 2. You really don't need to be high-passing all your kicks. A lot of the times they're already high passed. Use your ears to decide wether you need to high-pass or not. 3. There's no need to set your kick to "sends only" in Live. All you need to do is disable the track. You also don't usually need a sidechain trigger in Live since the sidechain input has a filter which lets you highpass the incoming kick signal so only the click of the kick triggers the sidechain. 4. COMPRESSION IS NOT FOR MAKING DRUMS LOUDER. Your goal when compressing your drums should not be to make them louder, it should be to glue them together, mold the dynamics to your liking and/or simply just for that over-compressed effect. If you want your drums to make you drums louder, turn them up! Or use Limiting/clipping/saturation.

Thanks for the comment, Alyx. I know I replied in Reddit, but I'll stick the reply here, too, for anyone just on KZbin: "Good point about the drums statement! I really meant they're often regarded as atonal, and their tuning is not as important as that of, say, a guitar or synth, etc. Obviously drummers know this, but it's something that I didn't pay attention to for a long time, but when I learned it it made a big difference. 2. The issue with only trusting your ears, is that often there is sub-audible information (especially when played through smaller speakers). That's when a spectrum analyser can really help see that info. 3. For sure...this is just my preference. You can also use something like Xfer's LFOTool plugin 4. It depends, but I agree that saturation is also a good tool
