La musica da allora non è stata polifonica ma omofonica e l'accordo arpeggiato e in particolare nelle fughe con i suoi cicli di 3a 4a e 5a e da relativa chiave maggiore a relativa minore o viceversa è il leitmotiv di un genere di media illuministi ( TV Film), che rappresenta una visione molto razionalista e limitata del periodo ma produce anche pregiudizi. Organo e Clavicembalo hanno anche un tono molto meno variabile rispetto al pianoforte, quindi la nostra visione del Barogue è colorata dal progresso della strumentazione del periodo romantico. Il libro Godel, Escher Bach e le successive ripetizioni della natura "matematica" di Bach si cementano nella psiche pop, ma TUTTA la musica è matematica.

I recently started to learn the prelude wich by itself is so demanding that I don't expect to master it within 4-6 months or maybe a year of practice. That she plays the whole piece by memory indicates that she also had to practice it a long time. She makes it look so easy but this performance is only possible with years of dedication and hard work!

This is just as good as Bach playing gets, on any instrument or ensemble. It is not possible to surpass Ms. Mascardi's feel for and mastery of this complex, inward utterance of the greatest composer. Casals had nothing on her. Even more than the cello, the lute with bass courses grants this music the unapproachable, unfathomable dignity in which it was conceived. Magnificent. As good as it gets. The _Sarabande_ of this/BWV1011 may well be the most esoteric and subtle, and one of the deepest and most affecting, of all the movements of Bach.

It's the subtlety with which she approaches her interpretations of volume, tempo, timbre and tone as well as a profound understanding of the whole composition and the rest of Bach's oeuvre that is to me what marks her as true genius. From the opening notes to the reverberating last string plucked there's absolutely nothing to disagree with or are we even listening critically... we're lost in the music floating along happily in the currents. I am pleased to see so many agree with me/us as well.

... my impression is alike, not only for the cello partitas but even for the violin solo partitas | sonatas by JSB. been part of my musical survival pack on iphone for yrs (in rec. with hopkinson smith, that is). actually, I'm a keyboard instrumentalist (esp. clavichord) - where 'lute-esque' take on striking chords is (to my taste) a nice way to avoid 'drumming' small soundboards with too many strings plucked at once... needless to say, I sincerely appreciate having found yt-vid.s as above by this lutenist. great stuff.

@@2010georgian1 are you sure about first ?! as far as I recall, jsbach and slweiss, the then 'official court lutenist' in dresden - whilst being of almost same age - personally knew and appreciated each other. and with such regard, jsbach would then have been fully aware of what was possible to be done by masters on lute of his time (i.e. a 'baroque' one, seen from today). but maybe, they both only met later than time of origin of compositions above. in leipzig however, in jsbach's immediate circles, chitarrones | players may not have been present in abundance (other than on eg italian courts | more relevant opera houses), I'd guess...

A heavenly combination of some of the best music ever, played exquisitely. I can't imagine a better interpretation than this, and what I particularly like is the time taken with the phrases. I love Bach's keyboard music, but in general there's often not a lot of space in it. I'm not sure whether his lute music inherently suggests this freer approach because of the nature of the instrument, or it's simply Mascardi's style, but I adore it, and feel that it makes it more profound.

. . . Where in New Zealand are you?.. It is such a long way. Which would be your nearest concert venue? I was down your way a decade ago looking for such venues from Auckland to Dunedin - 'scarce' best described my findings .

@@donaldcook3112 - In Auckland there is the Aotea Centre which includes the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre seating 2000 and the Herald Theatre which seats about 80 - 100. Adjacent to the Aotea Centre is the Auckland Town Hall which seats about 1500. (Julian Bream and John Williams have both performed there.) A venue called Dolphin Theatre is an intimate theatre seating 119. There is a flexible seating venue called The Factory Theatre seating up to 100. In West Auckland there is a performance venue called TAPAC. It is flexible seating from between 120 and 160 depending on the configuration. In East Auckland there is a venue called Howick Little Theatre, seating about 80 with flexible seating. In Wellington there are also other small venues, but the largest would be the Michael Fowler Centre which seats just over 2000. Christchurch also has a town hall suitable for classical performances. I cannot comment on Dunedin.

.ok, am an amateur horn player found some music for horn and it is a book of cello suites... played a couple of sarabands, dances and when it came to suite 5 my excitement changed to despair, i turned to cellists now lute. This, playing on a lute is definitely the most courageous and one of my favorite. Courante on cello is usually overexpressed but here in the favor of dance I am able to hear constant like trotting pace which makes perfect marriage to other dances of this suite. Beautiful musicianship.

This just happens to be where her attention has been placed in order to gain mastery. What she does is phenomenal, and she is obviously passionate about it. However, we are much more than something we engage in. The OP was correct- she has given up years to create this and will give up more. A sacrifice doesn't have to be negative- it just takes from other areas.

Ormai le Suite per liuto di Bach eseguite da Evangelina Mascardi, sono diventate per me un punto di riferimento per valutare altre versioni di altri liutisti e chitarristi ma, purtroppo, non sono ancora riuscito a trovare di meglio. Forse la questione è che ci si deve accontentate della perfezione! Dici bene, è vero, ottima esecuzione, eppure la versione del 1974 di Narciso Yepes per Deutch Grammophon (non altre) è davvero ancora bellissima, eseguita in modo pressoché perfetto e registrata in studio in modo da esaltare ogni sfumatura dello strumento.

@@matteogazzolo1 Hai tirato fuori un'altra grande versione. Narciso Yepes, penso che eseguisse questa suite ed altre di Bach con una chitarra a 10 corde. Credo che non sia giusto fare un confronto tra le due versioni perché si ha a che fare con due strumenti diversi e poi quella della Mascardi è live, mentre quella di Yepes è in studio; mi ha stupito la Mascardi che in quasi mezz'ora non ha avuto mai un cedimento. Non per essere un patito della "filologia" ma a me personalmente a parità di bravura, emoziona più una versione con il liuto che con la chitarra. Yepes comunque è fantastico e questa versione del '74 è straordinaria, perciò ti ringrazio per averlo citato e a permettere eventualmente ad altri di ascoltare uno dei più grandi chitarristi del '900.
