This machine was launched by French humiliation: Paris had to use NATO assets ( C-130s ) to support its intervention against the fanatics in Francophone Africa. They convinced their fellow Europeans that it was high time that they cut their dependence upon the Americans. So this machine was dripping with politics. For the price paid, it was a bad bargain. The Atlas 400 cost a mint. It's better than the C-130 -- but only marginally so. The pitch was that its technology ( super-efficient turbo-props ) would translate to commercial airliners -- that'd sell well in nations east of Western Europe. But its price tag is so steep that sales have not taken off.

@@georgebarnes8163 The Wiki on the M400 gets to the point. It was politically funded and built. On the economics, the plane is a bust -- totally blowing out its cost of construction and design. The players would've been much, much better off with buying American. But, then, there's the politics. The whole point of the design was to feed the European aero-industry, and that was certainly achieved. Even a (much) cheaper turbo-prop from North America was turned down -- flat. In many ways, it's a plane without a mission -- as the NATO players don't need its amazing short runway capability. Europe has full sized air strips -- aplenty. Its sole utility would be for re-colonization of Africa... another mind-boggling money pit. ( Afghanistan had been turned into a money-losing 'colony' by NATO. During that campaign the Best and the Brightest morphed the military mission into a social revolution mission. However, the locals utterly rejected Western Elitist notions of how to run their society. In thirty-years we'll find out how the 'smart phone social bomb' impacts the Pashtun. I suspect that getting rid of music and video is going to prove problematic for the Taliban.)

At a slow airspeed and a high angle of attack, the propellers "slip" ( a bit like Wile E Coyote's legs, when he walks of a cliff and realises). The resultant propwash over the wing airfoil prevents wing stall - exactly what you need to airdrop cargo using gravity extraction...

I agree that Grizzly woul dbe the cooler name, but clearly Atlas is a reference and a challenge to the Hercules. Also animals do not feature much in the naming tradition of these kinds of planes. is there a sertain amount of angle do they require for take off or you pull it up as needed?
@marklawton10524 жыл бұрын
RE-L Mayer The most important thing is airspeed and to keep it from stalling. After that it depends on the takeoff weight (payload), fuel load, runway length and the terrain surrounding the runway. That is to say that if you need a high climb rate from the runway, you will need to have less cargo (and potentially less fuel) onboard. Lightly loaded and running full power, these aircraft need only a short runway and can make a very steep climb at a high angle.
