We played this for our mother when she passed away. We looked at songs to play for her service and I ran across this song. I had never heard it before. Pretty much took me to my knee’s at 60 years old. I was asked to speak at her funeral and I added his words ( a heart that’s been broke is a heart that’s been loved ) to my speech about mom. After I spoke this song was played, our minister was sitting directly in front of me. He had never heard the song before and I could see him listening to the words. By the last chorus he was saying the words to the song. When the funeral was over he came and talked to me about what I had said and what a wonderful song. I must have listened to it a 100 times before her funeral with the thought that if I heard it enough it wouldn’t hit me so hard. I was wrong…. 10 months later and it still hits me. What a song and what a performer…. Simply the best!

DUde..no! Ed admits that whatever he has become, has become out of practice and determination. go check out his very early singing vids...you wont be able to believe that it's the same person who is singing in this video with such a huge crowd. Nobody has a gift. GOD is not partial. It's only our efforts that allow us to harness the oppurtunities that god provides us and turn them into gifts.

I lost my Dad at age 87 and Mum at age 85 and this beautiful song reminds me SO MUCH of Mum. It is so powerful and the ache to have her back for one more day is overpowering. It's very touching for me. He had nothing. And now? Do you see this crowd? It's hard to believe. From the street to the big stage. Now he has love, fame and money. He can do whatever he wants. But he is still the same funny guy who played on the street in the socks. Ed proved that dreams come true and that we should never give up. I wish him all the best. Edit: He wasn't homeless and I was wrong. Sorry for my mistake. ;) But I still admire him a lot.

The saddest and most heartfelt moment is during the songwriter film, watching him play it to his dad for the first time, fighting back the tears, sippng his coffee and staring into the cup, when the song ends, glancing up through teerful eyes looking for approval from his father who himself, off camera is probably fighting back tears himself. brought tears to my 50 years old eyes.....Ed, your grandmother will beso proud.

The fact no guitar was used shows how vulnerable he was allowing himself to be. I just lost my grandmother and randomly found this performance, but damn does it resonate with me. It's a great feeling to cry and laugh at the same time. I, like Ed know our loved ones are in a better place. It doesn't change the hurt we have from them no longer being present, however, we take comfort in knowing we'll see them again and they are watching us above. Hallelujah indeed.

@@-.a9942 Thank you for your helpful note. I actually knew that fact about his grandmother's death. Interestingly I also learned that Ed calls both his grandmother and his mother "mum". At first I thought it was his mother because of his use of "mum", but later watched another video where he shared it was in fact his grandmother who died which explains why I used his word, "mum". One of Ed's best songs, I think. Blessings.

I lost my mom not even a month ago and found this song the last couple weeks of her life and have played it every week since. This song is truly beautiful and has helped me through these last couple of months. It always makes me cry but it’s a good cry because now my mom is “home”

"You are an angel in the shape of my mom". I'm 70, a foreign war veteran, one of seven boys (no sister), husband and father of two wonderful adult children. I still thank my mother - every day - and hope she hears it from her throne on high.

“Dad always told me don’t you cry when you’re down, but Mom, there’s a tear every time that I blink.” My fav thing about Ed is how he can take such a personal story and turn it into lyrics that any living human can relate to.

I always bought Mum supermarket flowers, she always drank tea (gallons of it) and I took all her photo albums home when she died, I felt this song could have been written for me. How I miss her, dearest Mum.

This song will always hold a special place in my heart. Got a phone call from my dad that grandma passed away peacefully. She was such a loving person and she always had a smile on her face. Love ya grandma, gonna sing this song and think about that smile every time I do so!

God damn how lucky you are. My grandma's such a corrupt person so I can't say the same thing for her. But my other grandmother was a real good person. Passed away last year.

Ed Sheeran is really talented but if you know Beethoven you would know Beethoven is on a whole different level 😂 I'm sorry but pop music just cannot compare to classical music

Damazen I love ed's music but Beethoven is just something else entirely. Actually, comparing them doesn't really work as their music is vastly different from each other.
