Introduction to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

This video discusses what the FAFSA is, how it is used to determine a student's ability to pay for college, and why it is the most important part of the financial aid process for universities in the United States. The FAFSA can be accessed and completed online at fafsa.ed.gov
It is free to apply, and students may apply on or after January 1st of the school year in which they plan to attend (e.g., you can apply after 1/1/19 if you plan to attend the Fall 2019/Spring 2020/Summer 2020 school year).

International students can't apply. FAFSA requires a Social Security Number

I disagree for the following reasons: (1) Students who do not have a social security number but do have an Alien Registration Number (ARN) can submit the FAFSA. (2) Some schools ask international students to submit the FAFSA directly to their university financial aid office for purposes of determining institutional aid offers. In such cases, the FAFSA is still "required" even though it is not sent to the federal government. (3) Some international students may be eligible to apply for a social security number (depending on their type of visa) to submit the FAFSA. Even though the FAFSA will be rejected for federal financial aid, the school may have the financial information on record. International students should check with their university's financial aid office to see what is required, as it varies on an institution-by-institution basis. Many schools do not ask international students to do anything related to the FAFSA but do ask international students to complete an institutional aid application.
