Surf less popular spots in wind and bad tides and you may have it to yourself. Dawn patrol, there's unspoken respect for those who are out there before you. Go with a friend or two. Not an army. Fully understand shoulder hopping and snaking and don't. Try to paddle out in the channel and not ruin somebody's best wave avoiding you. Watch before you paddle. A seemingly small day could have a large swell with long waits. Big surf warnings- No parking,lots of older guys with longer boards, excited chatter or serious intent,mist, booming fog,pack sitting further out, broken boards in the trash cans. Use extreme caution,when in doubt don't paddle out.

I lived in Hawaii from 1983 to 1989 and we were always messed with surfing with the locals. If you dropped in or dinged a locals board, there was going to be a fight on the beach. We had a group of 6 locals waiting for us for 3 hours on the beach to get out of the water when we did, the youngest kid walked up and started the Melee by punching my buddy in the mouth. Bad mistake, we has a badass Navy Seal that was from Cali and could shred too but they didnt like him dropping in on him although it was them dropping in on us regularly, and if we missed a wave they got pissed for wasting a wave. Moral of the story is this doesnt surprise me ONE BIT!!! We were Navy but we all could shred and were always pleasant and polite to them but it didnt matter. They hated that we were in their water.

@bonefishboards3 жыл бұрын
As a visitor from the mainland US, if you show respect, you get respect. I'm not defending Kala's actions. I'm just stating what works all over the world in surfing, including the west side or north shore of Oahu. Been to Hawaii multiple times, never had an issue surfing anywhere. Surfed all over the world. Chased a hurricane swell to Nova Scotia Canada and got hassled by a few locals. That was the only time that has ever occurred to me in 35 years of surfing. It felt like they learned localism from the movie "The North Shore" or something. It wasn't even at a competitive spot. Very relaxed in the water. Weirdness :)
@bry86363 жыл бұрын
That’s just luck. I grew up on Maui and have seen haoles beaten for paddling out. No infraction, they did nothing wrong and they beat the guy bloody because he didn’t exit as soon as they told him. Left him on the beach at windmills with fractured ribs and fractured orbital. His face was grotesque. It’s not about ‘respect’. It’s about showing dominance. Kala does that shit all the time. He creates confrontations and imagined infractions just to be offended. Odd as it sounds, there are indeed people who seek to be offended. Kala grew up wanting to be a regulator. Looks like he’s living his dream. Murdering surfers. The Brazilians as a rule are pretty disrespectful. But kala is far from some noble enforcer.

@bry86363 жыл бұрын
@@davemasbutter266 Kinda. Growing up there I knew what spots were going to be rough and knew I couldn’t slight anyone in anyway. After awhile of seeing your face they grudgingly accept you. Even after surfing Windmills for over a decade a ‘Hawaiian’ I’d never seen before paddled out and started composing about ‘too many haoles taking all our waves’. I was the only haole in the water. What’s weird is I had gotten to know a lot of the locals there and I assumed they accepted me, but not one of them spoke up to defend me. Some weird code where antihoale sentiment rules over common curtesy. Most traveling don’t have a clue of what to avoid. I’ve seen more beat downs than I can count because of a tourist being in the wrong place. So if you’re a traveling surfer and don’t want to be chased out of the water, yes, you better be packing.

Bottom line here folks, Makaha is a local Hawaiian family beach, if you aren't Hawaiian, Makaha isn't a place for you to surf...
@johnfeepassword63902 жыл бұрын
So the bottom line is you’re racist and that’s OK?
@Lavadx2 жыл бұрын
@@johnfeepassword6390 Classic racist comment my Haole friend... I too am Haole, though I'm born and raised in Hawaii, I am not Hawaiian, and because of knowledge of and respect for the Hawaiian people, I do not surf there, and neither should you. That said, have a great life and enjoy your racist attitude, I'm sure it's served you well thus far in your life... DEUCES!!!

@@Lavadx so I’m racist because I don’t think people should treat public property as private property ?

@@johnfeepassword6390 You assumed I was racist, right? Go there and see what your attitude gets you then, don't hate on me, I'm trying to do a public service announcement here... And trust me, it's people like you that will find out. Pilau Haoles always find out!!!
