A tip for Americans abroad - never say "I'm an American..." unless someone asks where you are from. Americans should remember they are NOT in America. Other countries have their own laws and saying "I'm an American" doesn't give privilege, if anything it reeks of self entitlement. The police officer here had amazing anger management.

To be honest, it's fairly likely that someone with a knife would have been dealt with by members of the general public before the police arrived. For instance in 2019, members of the general public held off a terrorist armed with knives and a fake suicide vest using improvised weapons including a narwhal tusk. British police undergo 18-22 weeks of training in the classroom before being allowed to walk the beat but their training does not end there - basically it never ends because they are always learning. This video always narks me because it's a basic misunderstanding of the Policing By Consent system we have in the UK. He's working on the assumption that the US policing system is the default around the world while most of Europe follow a cooperative relationship. Everyone's responsible for making sure society is as safe as possible. It's another example of the "Socialism" that many (but particularly right wing) USians complain about. Social rights come with social responsibilities. And if (like this guy) you aren't grown up enough to live up to the responsibilities, then it might be an idea to stay at home... 🤷😁

In no way were the British police owned. The know nothing parrot believed that the rules of detention were identical to those in his own state, whereas in the United Kingdom the police have the ability to hold a person for up to 24 hours for questioning without having permission from a court or from a senior police officer. The 24 hours can also be extended by a further 24 hours by showing due cause. This would usually only occur if the person being detained cannot have their identity verified and they don’t have residency in this country. This time frame is in order to allow the police to investigate the case whilst not allowing someone who is potentially a witness or an offender to abscond. They hold people for interview by trained officers who can be case specific meaning that they might have to be brought in from a different location and they can also be faced with interviewing multiple subjects who might not be aware that they had actually witnessed something until they are given a slight lead by the investigators. Some times the questioning of one subject may result in several others being completely exonerated or released without any further questioning. But by far the best way of being released by the police is to provide positive proof of your identity and to provide an address where you can be contacted if they need to speak with you again or as a tourist your proposed itinerary for the duration of your stay.

this here is facts right now. pretty much in lament terms the british police can hold you for the maximum of 48 hours in cell while a investigation is ongoing. until they can prove you are innocent they will carry on with a investigation. this american went to the wrong country to exercise his american rights. this twat should have been arrested and shown a point that being a knob just throws you further into the guilty area and the police has full power to throw him in cuffs. he should have learnt the law for another country, he should have exercised his right for concealed carry now that would be funny to watch.

It is 24 hours without charge, anything more needs an extention from a senior officer and if it is extended again a judge needs to sign it off for upto 72 hours and these would only be in the most serious of cases, except under anti terrorism legislation which is up to 28 days. You can be kept in custody after charge, but would need to be taken to court at the first opportunity.

I love the American attitude of "superior knowledge of the law" EVEN IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY! ...It is a MAJOR REASON why Americans are not liked! This sort of video shows no SUPPORT for "law and order" or the professionals who are tasked with enforcement! FYI, the correct response to being detained, is to say "HOW CAN I HELP?" and if there is a reason to be elsewhere, give your contact details so you can help later! Confrontation like this makes you LOOK guilty, whether you are not is irrelevant! British law is NOT equivalent to American law! Neither are so-called "rights"! There are many overlaps but they are also different for example in England and Wales the prosecuting body is the Crown Prosecution Service where as in Scotland it’s the Procurator Fiscal and in Northern Ireland it’s the Public Prosecution Service and many people in the UK don’t even realise this fully) than the actual first step in maintaining them.

My Sister & brother in law got stopped in Florida whist driving. In the UK we have to get out of the car when stopped.. BIG mistake. The U.S police got their guns out and told him to drop to the floor 😮 it was really frightening ooops

You must live in a nice area, there are that many police on my street on an almost weekly basis, we've even had the Armed Response Unit a handful of times. We get a few weeks of rest after each arrest while the culprit does their time, but there is a group of 4-5 people that live in the block of flats on my street that just can't seem to get along for more than a few days at best. I've never seen or heard confirmation, but allegedly one of them has possession of a firearm. They have all been arrested a few times for assault but never seem to do more than 3 months behind bars.

99% of Americans I've met over here are absolutely wonderful, just yesterday a couple asked me for directions to Cardiff Castle and all I said was head around the corner and you can't miss it, then they tried to offer me a fiver as a tip! I declined and told them they don't need to tip over here and we ended up chatting for 20 minutes or so about do's and don'ts. The donut in the video is a very small minority but they do tend to give all Americans a bad rep over here unfortunately

Detained and under arrest are 2 different things in the UK, with different meanings. They can detain you for any reason valid to an investigation. He can't use the bathroom as he may try to flee the scene. Under Arrest is when you are being taken for questioning at a seperate location, the station, by the police. The latter involves handcuffs even if your co-operative
