One of the best Ted Talks I've heard. Congrats, Gracia! I'm an American who's lived abroad in Latin America for over 20 years now. My two sons were born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and when dad died, we returned to the US (Utah) to live. My sons were different than the rest of the culture, were learning English , and I experienced along with them, what it was like to be marginalized within my own society. After 6 years, I'd had enough and returned to live abroad. I wanted my sons to be in a country where they felt free and not so looked down upon. We're now living happily in Mexico. I get you, sistah! Keep doing what you do so well. You're making a difference...

I like this speech It makes me think about myself as a culture girl. It was interesting listening to her because it did connect o me when I first got here more Mexico, peers look at me wear and that makes me feel uncomfortable. but now i feel proud of who am i and what i have become from. She is right and we should do something to continue with the culture to respect each other no matter who we are.

We can all learn from her perspective, feelings, and struggles, which can move us to empathy and compassion to care for all who arrive, live, and become part of the woven fabric of a community. It calls for flexibility tolerance and understanding by all sides. If I for example am from Guatemala and move to Ruanda, should I expect the educational system in Ruanda to teach me about Guatemala? Maybe, maybe not, but I can share the richness of my background with them. The point she makes about teaching more about all continents is very valid. Parents and students have to take responsibility for education. If you expect Others to teach you heritage and culture you will always be frustrated
@tiaturnbullchampionscoachi95873 жыл бұрын
I think that at least the education system can recognize not to leave the learning on the shoulders of very young students. The dynamics/percentages of how many students from each culture that the student is aware of but the teacher or other students are not aware of change in every school. Ie: your example of a Guatemalan student in Rwanda. If each school and teachers had a course in cultural competency they could do much to shift and help to eradicate the microaggressions each single student or small group of students is mandatorilly forced to put up with. One teacher with empathy and understanding can lead a classroom of students into cultural acceptance. At this age when students are most open to learning a teacher can teach cultural empathy regarding the cultures of any students that are in her class. The teacher would have to be trained but once trained one teacher would know how to approach the subject with any future students and classes. There can be a cultural support online portal where teachers can get support and get their particular questions answered. The training can include ( among other ideas that the trainers would be aware of) How to approach a child who may feel left out culturally and have a one on one conversation to find out if they would like to share their culture with the rest of the class and how to introduce the subject and set up the learning in ways that any of the students involved will be embraced and celebrated instead of made fun of. These lessons can be taught in a way that once the young people learn with students who come from a different culture in their own class or school they will be able to carry those skills understandings and competencies out into the larger community. They will be able to practice empathy, curiosity, understanding, acceptance, celebration, inclusion and any other positive traits they gain with new people from other cultures that they have not yet been introduced to in the larger community and the world.

I was at that girls nation when she was there. While I totally agree with the idea, the bill she created was badly written and needed major revision before it could work. In fact, the whole group of us rewrote a resolution to support her points. Good to be active for this cause, but please don’t take things out of context and over simplify. We all worked really hard that week and passes many meaningful bills related to race or education or meaningful problems. Her bill was just not ready yet and that’s ok!
@francessaunders3447 Жыл бұрын
Why is that ok? It seems like they did not feel seen or heard after experiencing this invisibility all of their young student lives?
@elenajoe8610 Жыл бұрын
you cant pass a law that is not finished or functional, that is not how the government works. the idea was good, she just had to do some revisions that is all. The debates were not about the content of their bill. A lot of time was spent letting them speak and discuss the topic, so im not sure how you could say they were not seen or heard@@francessaunders3447

I agree, it's s a disservice to many multinationals citizens to feel as though there history is the alternative. When in reality, history is intertwined and there is always more to expand on. Colonization makes individuals think that the new implemented system was more advanced then the previous system without ever considering the messing of other ideas as being more of an ideal. In all, we the people stand strong when we embrace our differences and not let us separate us.

Yeah but imagine an American in Rwanda, would not Rwandan students think the American weird for her food choices or cultural traditions? Would the American be justified in pushing the Rwandan system cater to his culture and history? They wouldn’t as most countries wouldn’t. It doesn’t make sense to change a host culture to cater to immigrant cultures. They will blend in naturally over time. There is nothing wrong with Main being predominantly white or its traditions and food choices.

ok we all know school is failing us but just as she can say I want to learn more about Africa, I can say I want to learn more about Italy and Ireland. The conversation seems to always be brought back to color and being a victim of it. Just because white people are of the same color doesn't mean we all share the same nationality. It's always talked about like one or the other. When you're in the USA you mainly learn about US history. That is how it has always been. It's not an attack to people of different ethnicities. You're an American first and foremost and if you want to learn more about a certain culture there is nothing stopping you from doing it. People of color need to accept that there is a less percentage of thier skin color to white skin color in the USA, but for some reason they take this so personally. I guess that's the parents job to make them feel safe and secure in themselves and not uncomfortable with being different. I grew up a red head with freckles and the nine, I felt different and at times very insecure but I never got angry about it. I eventually came to see how special it is. It is a learning process most of us go through to feel accepted no matter what our skin color is.
