I love. LOVE this kind of soft storytelling. Or what it may be called ‘storytelling with self-control’. There’s no chunk of the total screentime sacrificed for exposition, no forced action to keep you hooked, and no music to fill that beautiful silence; these scenes breathe, literally. You’re just gently taken in for a ride and you kinda forget you’re not actually there with the characters. I’ve only ever seen such purposefully restrained writing in the Lackadaisy pilot. This is special.

I love the fact that the boss never elaborates on what “enough money” mean. Sure it could be big time upper management being greedy scum bags cutting stuff because it doesn’t make 6 figures, or, more likely considering the state of the worlds economy with unreasonably over priced, under cared for, and mass produced nature of the products, the show itself literally could just not be making enough money to keep the lights on. And that’s what’s great about this dialogue, nothing is really ever 100% concrete while still being communicated completely. What was the disaster? Doesn’t matter, the only important thing is that it happened and hurt people. Is boss just greedy or is he legit stuck in a double bind? Doesn’t matter to the problem at hand, the current profits aren’t “enough”. Are Lawrence and Toni boyfriends? Doesn’t matter, all that does is that they care about each other and continue help each other be better. This is how you world build and give context without it being exposition.

This is what truly mature media is. It doesn’t need violence or sex or for explicit and obvious details to be spelled out. This is entertainment without the need for spectacle. Nobody is perfect or better than anyone else, there aren’t any villains or hero’s, just people in each of their own lives doing what they think is right and it’s truly refreshing. This is the most tall, relaxing, and complex glass of water I have ever tasted, and boy howdy I am absolutely parched. Not because this was lacking in any way, but rather because I had no idea how thirsty I was until now.

I don’t know if you’ll ever read this, but I want to cry because of how powerfully human this story is in a time period of history where it feels like there’s not always enough gentleness, thoughtful communication, compassion, or love blossoming around us. I know in my heart that these four aspects still germinate, and thrive, in abundance in our world; sometimes, though, it can be hard to see a flowering meadow through a cloud of thick smoke. Your short film allowed me to see past the smoke. I hope that there’s always going to be so many people just like Lawrence and Toni, doing their best even when faced down with the worst. @@sheaterrito OK HERES MY ESSAY: I am repeating myself again but I really like how vague you kept the "disaster" is. Maybe we will see more in the context of this world of what the disaster is, but even if it's revealed more specifically as to what it is, I still think it will be as impactful as it is now. What I really like is how you address not "what is the disaster" but how the people changed after it, and how that part of being hurt is probably the biggest memory to a disaster. Each generation has its own "disaster" as you've said to me and for ours it might be covid etc (there sure were plenty). But I think what's also advantageous of keeping the "disaster" vague is that it could be anything. It can be something that the world simultaneously experienced, or it could be individualized to each person. It could be in general how as we age older we experience hurt at some point or another. We might be hurt in different ways but we were all "shattered" in some form. Maybe this is a bit of a stretch but it could serve how everyone in the film has a scar in different place. Each person might have their own "disaster" that fundamentally changed who they are, and I think Toni's message stands just as strong, even for disasters that are individualized. I think the tear jerker to this film is the recognition of a disaster has happened, that the world (either for everyone or the world of an individual)has changed. Even if we pretend to continue like the ways before like nothing has happened, like Lawrence said, "im not really the same inside", no matter the outworld appearance. Often times the recognition of the disaster is what we need, after gluing ourselves back together, to recognize that we have these cracks. What's also interesting is that we don't know if toni got hurt by the disaster. Perhaps he did or perhaps he didn't, but he is emotionally at a different place than Lawrence. Which I don't have much conclusion about yet but i think it'd be interesting to learn later how he comes around to the issue. I do think the fact that the setting "Children TV show host" is very specific, and that the purpose of it was so that Lawrence and Toni are speaking to the generation that was hurt, rather than the children in that episode. So perhaps the theme of the film is somehow related to generational events, something that affects the world rather than the individual. But to me on a personal level, seeing Lawrence carry a glued up vase and seeing his "healing" is one of the most touching thing.

Because giving it a chance showed me a really incredible piece of art, with story and depth and leaves you thinking. Im not sure how to word this without it sounding like a fake review, but it's so good. As much as I hate it, seeing worlds like this so broken down and distraught and quietly chaotic have such an impact on me. I love these two. So glad I watched. But I stared at the screen with my eyes wide open all 15 minutes, on the verge of tears several times, and I'm writing this comment as if I wasn't ready to die on my pillow right just before watching this animation. This. It just hit me. It hits all the right places. This is the first indie animation that I feel such strong kinship with, from the art style to all the details of the plot. And I recognized Lawrence's slavic accent, but hearing Russian was still an incredibly pleasant surprise. As a Russian, with all these horrible things happening in the world, with my family, I associated myself with him SO much I cried while writing this comment after all. Despite all that happened, it's still you. And I still like you. With everything. Спасибо! Я люблю это!

Okay, where do I begin with this? Just, wow.. This has one of the most realistic and like, relatable story telling to me at least? More than most *hollywood* films I know, especially with the dialogue. It's something which is obviously from some, I don't know, somewhere sincere. There was a story to tell. And it was told so, so realistically and beautifully. Some parts which really stood out was the body language. To me, thoughts and states are shown mostly through body language, especially when something is internal. Irritability, worry, nervousness ect. It captured so realistically. The tears in Lawrence's eyes when he almost cries but not quite. In the meeting with Toni, everything is so thought through. It's beautiful. The stylisation, the jazz music which fit so well and finally the minutes of sincere silence. It's all true talent. This is beautiful. I think you can tell I don't know how to comment on things but I hope the message comes across.

I never got emotionally attached so quickly to an animation short before. Thank you so much for sharing this idea to the world and bringing it to existence❤

I like this, I like how Lawrence's accent seemingly goes away when he's upset, and how you coloured Toni's palm correctly despite it not really popping up except for one scene! This feels refreshing, I think I'll show this to my mum sometime (albeit she might not understand it, because her English kinda went away). I wonder what the disaster is tho, it reminded me of COVID-19 with the long-term effects, but the marks seem like a zombie apocalypse! I also liked how you mixed humans and animals in just the right way. PS: sorry if I'm being too flowery, I've just enjoyed this and wanted to share, I found this via a recommendation under a CalArts film about middle school girls together with a video discussing Hello Baby loll 00:20 01/05/2024

we need more animations that are like this, heartwarming yet heartbreaking at the same time.

This literally means so much because I actually had huge scars on my body, because I had exama, a skin condition that makes you scratch so much from the itchiness...it kinda makes you cut through your own skin
