I heard this on a classical station while I was running errands for work. Sometimes the pricks don't even tell you who the artist is. I got back to work and the piece was still playing and it was the end of the day. I sprinted to the clock as fast as I could and sprinted back to my car and got back in time to get the name :). This will probably always be my favorite piano work.

As a norwegian I can't listen to this concerto without feeling very homesick. It's so beautiful it actually hurts sometimes, and it's like Grieg is using the notes like a painter would use his brush to paint the norwegian landscape. It is interesting to note that Grieg actually wrote parts of this concerto in Denmark during a visit at some friends place. He would sit in a small greenhouse that also had a piano and piece ideas together. It was premiered on april 3, 1869, but Grieg couldn't attend the performance because he had other engagements in Christiania (Oslo). The concert became all the rage and Grieg became incredibly popular in Europe as a result. Franz Liszt played through the concert at first glance, (reading directly from the notes), when Grieg visited him. Liszt adored it and became ecstatic about Griegs talent. It would have been so nice if he had completed his second concerto.

For me nationality means little to nothing. I feel like this music gives me a warm hug and makes me so happy. It gives me the same homesick feeling but not for the country that i am born in, witch again means very little to me, but for my true home where i was raised and where my parents live.
@iseeu-fp9po
@iseeu-fp9po 8 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right. I mean, I love german, russian... all kinds of music, really. It doesn't matter. Music is the universal language. The warmest of hugs in this concerto is one of the melodic themes of the second movement ( 14:19 ). It cracks me up. It's like coming home to safety.

I can understand your feeling, and I was not born in Norway! But some of my ancestors were, I have been there, and saw Grieg's beautiful home in Bergen. Believe me, you should be extraordinarily proud of him and what your countrymen did during WWII. No wonder that Winston Churchill said, "if anyone wants to know why we are going to win this war, let him look to Norway!" What a fabulous country!

I used to start every morning on the long bus ride to school with this piece, every single morning, half asleep and dreaming of such beautiful stories as the music played in my ears through the headphones. Many years later the piece with its magnificent highs and lows still reminds me of self-assured teenaged bravado softened by tragic, desperate heartbreak. Alternating between wistful and frantic and triumphant and broken, swelling with a powerful and dramatic emotionality. I can almost see the same stories play out, if I close my eyes. There is no music more beautiful than this, that ever was or will be.

There's an age-old principle in music called "leave them hungry." When you have a good part don't overplay it, that way people will come back to hear it again and again. Something pop artists willfully ignore, in stead they opt to sing the same line over and over until your head goes numb.

What a one-of-a-kind concerto. A lot of composers can make great works by beautifully developing a theme - but Grieg's ability to come up with themes and melodies so original and beautiful in themselves is just unbelievable... My heart will always belong to Beethoven for the emotion carried through his music, but Grieg's music has a very rare "spark" to it...

This was my gran's favourite piece of music. This compelling Concerto...a favorite of mine for over fifty years. It's as though, "an outsider's view, fantasy and expression of 'love,' itself"--in both the emotional giving and receiving. The Concerto seems to contain an emotional expression of "truth," that is common to us all in our humanity. I love it. I remember Emil Gilel's fine rendition--somewhere, there in the old cobwebs of my memories

This is by far the best rendition of Grieg's timeless piano concerto. I've listened to it no less than 30 times; this piece invokes true emotional gratification in me. Dubravka Tomsic plays the concerto better than any other pianist. Her tempo, expression, and musicality far surpass any other recording I've listened to. Take my word for it. I enjoy the Grieg concerto most when played like this, with poetry, warmth and noble passion rather than as a virtuoso warhorse. The orchestral introduction to the Adagio must be one of the most beautiful in the entire genre.I am glad to hear the Finale played as a real Norwegian "Halling", not like a hell-for-leather "Grand Galop Brillant". This pianist's playing is so natural and unmannered.

I love this piece. And was really grooving on this version in particular. So sharp, so clear, crystalline perfection on the keys. Passionate, varied moods. And THEN I glanced back over to the video and saw the face materialize and thought, "Wait WHOOA, is THAT Dubravka Tomsic?! No wonder it's so good!" I only happened to know of her from some other '92ish "Classic Digital CD" of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" my uncle bought us as a Christmas present and which was among our first Compact Discs. It was one of those bargain dealies, but the sound was simply so moving and astonishing I could never get over it so I played that CD hundreds of times. And I'd later heard other performers do the piece and they sounded limpid, or muffled by comparison, like they weren't feeling it and swaying with it and slightly dancing dangerously outside the rigid confines of the time-signature the way Dubravka played with all these things so effortlessly. So that was what made me research the performer herself. ANYWAY, I got SO excited when I saw her face here that I yelled across the room to my wife and then set about composing this fan love-letter of a utubular post. THANKS for the upload.

The thing with Grieg is that that he wrote folk music. That means that those who had the tune were king. If that was the orchestra then the pianist had to accompany them no matter how spectacular his part was. Listening to this performance I would say that the balance is just about perfect.

The Adagio...when the cello softly pours in, then the clarinet floats high up top, then the french horn softly mourns, and finally a single piano note, that's when I just burst into tears every time.

This thrilling concerto is so different from others---the tonal structure, etc. It feels more outdoor than any other concerto--no surprise as Grieg's first inspiration was his beloved Norwegian country side which he loved to hike in. Its certainly a classic and in the 'arsenal' of any first class pianist along with the Beethoven., Rach, and Mozart

+Ryan Ferretti pride has various meanings, you know in this context it is not the same pride as say, conceited pride or pride of one's personal achievement. one can feel pride in their child or a family member doing something - similar with pride in someone of your culture. you may be all the more proud to see their accomplishment represent your family especially if it is inspires by the land or history your family know. you and Bayou are being deliberately pedantic and quite hostile to a completely harmless comment. go away
