What a shame Grover Gardner couldn't do all the Story of Civilization because he IS Will Durant's voice to me. What an awesome accomplishment those 11 Volumes are. I love Audible making it accessible to so many more & that I can listen to the volumes, heavily bookmark it, and after once or twice, you can listen and fall asleep, then wake up and keep going from wherever it is knowing you're blessed with brilliant narrative history and part of the most impressive scholarly Life's work I am aware of.

About Edward Gibbon: If a historian is more renowned because of their most famous' books writing style instead of historical accuracy or discoveries, they’re a poor historian.

All you people participating in what you think is Western Philosophy are missing the point… Western philosophy is not about arguing and debating with each other regarding what old dead guys said philosophy is about... it should be about developing new and innovative ways at looking at the human condition and trying to come up with a holistic answer… you people are wasting your time scuffling in the dirt for marbles at recess at a preschool level institution of your choosing…

+Stephen Kirby How superior you must be to all of us knowledge seekers.
@stephenkirby1264
@stephenkirby1264 8 жыл бұрын
+MrLambris I don't feel superior to anybody. Why would you say that? The seeking of the knowledge of TRUTH is just the most important endeavor a human being can undertake, and the most difficult. A week or so ago I responded to comments Dallas Shields wrote: ‘’+Stephen Kirby Specifically the idea of Individual human enlightenment, and why, after Kant wrote this, no one has been able to achieve it. I'm just an amateur philosopher looking for the truth.’’ +Dallas Shields Since you are an amateur philosopher, I will tread lightly, for me, and that is saying a bunch. First, the study of philosophy is not the study of the lives of individuals who purported to be philosophers. The study of philosophy is the study of the ideas elucidated by humans throughout human history as to the way humans should lead their lives. It is important that you do not confuse these two points. Second, the term ‘’individual human enlightenment’’ is a moving target. Let’s see if I can stop the movement of the concept enough to define it in a way that covers all the moving targets. ‘’Individual human enlightenment’’ is simply the unendarkening of oneself from the biases and influences you received and accepted as truth during your youthful and formative years.’’ As you can guess from this definition, it follows that many concepts and ideas formulated by individuals would be endarkening, would contribute to the darkening of an individual's perspective toward this one life that they know is theirs to live. So then the definition of enlightenment would be to alleviate the negative biases and influences that are endarkening one's life perspective. So now back to Immanuel Kant's quote; "Enlightenment is man's release from his self-incurred tutelage(immaturity). Tutelage(immaturity) is the incapacity to use one's own understanding without the guidance of another. Such tutelage(immaturity) is self-imposed if its cause is not lack of intelligence, but rather a lack of determination and courage to use one's intelligence without being guided by another." 1784 essay (What Is Enlightenment?) Neither Kant nor I say anything about enlightenment having anything to do with anything religious, or spiritual, or mystical, or magical, or miraculous, or supernatural at all. Specifically, because Kant and I have come to the understanding that these things are not at all necessary to unendarken oneself, to enlighten oneself. So after reading and understanding this, what does the next question become? +Dallas Shields Heidegger makes some excellent points about how to perceive ''Being'', but he muddled it up with a bunch of phraseology that only obfuscated the truth in what he was getting at. Here is one Occam's Razor attempt at defining TRUTH: TRUTH IS, regardless of what you, or me, or another individual or entity thinks, says, and does. (Precisely because humankind's use of language to express perceived experiences obfuscates the imagery for the listening individual.) An individual must experience his or her TRUTH in such a way that another individual who has experienced his or her own personal TRUTH can acknowledge with a simple head movement. This is what Kant meant when he spoke of ''the categorical imperative''. Everyone created on this planet has the capabilities to realize TRUTH, very few have discerned ''information masquerading as truth'' from ''information which is TRUTH, in any thoroughly universally understood manner. Explore your personal aha moments of knowing, and then you will understand BEING. Daily rigorous utilization of your intelligence, conscience, and common sense capabilities is all that is necessary. I am an everyman. If I can do it, anyone can. Stephen Kirby thehappierproject@gmail.com

+Stephen Kirby You are playing a game of one-up·man·ship. I'm likely a hypocrite in some respect for pointing it out. "Daily rigorous utilization of your intelligence, conscience, and common sense capabilities is all that is necessary. I am an everyman. If I can do it, anyone can." You see how your comment implies that I must do something at your recommendation to reach a standard which you have deemed acceptable in order to be payed consideration. It also implies that I have not considered these things that you recommend and am contextually placed in the subordinate position of student and you the teacher. This dynamic is again expressed in the fact that you ,without prompt, provide an unrelated conversation where you are attempting to lecture someone on the nature of TRUTH. In addition to these subtle slights you also casually put yourself in the company of Kant ("neither Kant nor I"); who's "authority" in the field of philosophy renders him superior to most men. "I don't feel superior to anybody. Why would you say that?" I said that because in your original post you are patronizing in both the content and tone of your comment.I would say i have you pegged aptly given the above reasons. Your point analogous to, an the aspiring musician who only ever listens to music and never actually plays is selling themselves short, is valid. However, the point is based on the assumption that the person listening doesn't practice, and so, initially and without evidence you assume the worst of your reader to the benefit of your ego; so that you might pave the way to their enlightenment with patronizing sentiments of diligence. I'm not going to reply to your other points as they are not part of the conversation; no matter how much you would like to inject them into it.

+MrLambris commented; ‘’+Stephen Kirby You are playing a game of one-up·man·ship. I'm likely a hypocrite in some respect for pointing it out.’’ MrLambis, be specific, exactly how am I ‘’playing’’ a game of one-up-man-ship. I am of the opinion that this is your assumption. I wrote: ("Daily rigorous utilization of your intelligence, conscience, and common sense capabilities is all that is necessary. I am an everyman. If I can do it, anyone can."), and I meant it. ‘You see how your comment implies that I must do something at your recommendation to reach a standard which you have deemed acceptable in order to be [paid] consideration.’’ No, you would have to write more clearly for me to ‘’see’’ what you are getting at. It is not my recommendation that you utilize more of your ‘’genius’’ capabilities. Right now my recommendation is that you utilize ANY of your intelligence, ‘’genius’’ level or ‘’stupid’’ level or whatever. ‘’It also implies that I have not considered these things that you recommend and am contextually placed in the subordinate position of student and you the teacher.’’ What it implies is that you have not utilized your reasoning and logic capabilities rigorously enough to come to understand that you are not utilizing enough of your ‘’genius’’ capabilities to come to understand anything of any real importance. It is you who implies that you are in a ‘’student’ capacity, and I am in a ‘’teacher’’ capacity. I will directly state that you could dissolve your doubts regarding the issues of which I speak by ‘’teaching yourself’’ how to more rigorously utilize your ‘’genius’’ capabilities. By way of a suggestion, that is all I can offer to assist you to understand. ‘’This dynamic is again expressed in the fact that you ,without prompt, provide an unrelated conversation where you are attempting to lecture someone on the nature of TRUTH.’’ Your assumption that an anecdotal bit of information is a lecture, exposes the levels of self-doubt you have to live with on a daily basis. ‘’In addition to these subtle slights you also casually put yourself in the company of Kant ("neither Kant nor I"); who's "authority" in the field of philosophy renders him superior to most men.’’ You make another assumption that Kant was ‘’superior to most men.’’ You could not be more incorrect. Kant’s ‘’authority’’ in the philosophical realm was attributed to him by individuals who did not have a clear understanding of where Kant was incorrect. "I don't feel superior to anybody. Why would you say that?" ‘’I said that because in your original post you are patronizing in both the content and tone of your comment.I would say i have you pegged aptly given the above reasons.’’ Maybe my writing sounds patronizing to you, because you live with self-doubt, but does not sound patronizing to others who have come to an understanding of that of which I speak. ‘’Your point analogous to, an the aspiring musician who only ever listens to music and never actually plays is selling themselves short, is valid.’’ Thanks for the validation, I think. Though, I can't quite understand what you're talking about because I mention no musicians for you to make an analogy regarding. ‘’However, the point is based on the assumption that the person listening doesn't practice…’’ More clearly explicate how my ‘’not analogy about musicians’’ leads to the assumption of which you speak. ‘’...and so, initially and without evidence you assume the worst of your reader to the benefit of your ego…’’ And more clearly elucidate, for your adoring online audience, how my ego is any more involved in this thread than yours. You are making the purported connection that my ego has anything to do with the exposition of Truth. I make no mention of anything leading to that assumption of yours. ‘’...so that you might pave the way to their enlightenment with patronizing sentiments of diligence.’’ You so completely mis-apprehend the point I am trying to make that it is laughable. So I will try to more clearly state my point. I cannot pave the way to individual human enlightenment for anyone but myself. If you are in search of individual human enlightenment, individual human unendarkenment, you must do it yourself. ‘’I'm not going to reply to your other points as they are not part of the conversation; no matter how much you would like to inject them into it.’’ That's a good thing because it appears you do not know what you're talking about anyway. Try harder...
