Machiavelli is a most interesting figure. What he wrote is regarded mostly as "the way it is" but is usually disdained by so-called upstanding politicians or historians staking claims to high morality. Thanks for posting.

Machiavelli's brilliance, realism and cynicism, enhanced by his vast cultural background and blatant honesty, embodies the essence of humanity's nature vis-à-vis its vast historical journey, while providing a clear path for its potential future. Actually, I view his most arduous critics as nothing short of hypocritical and condemnable, for they are cloaked by an ingratiated virtuous outlook that conceals their true essence, unless their self-professed ethics are entirely based upon an unrealistic naiveté. To be sure, those who lack the required understanding of human nature and the indispensable awareness of its bloody history should never be considered as an adequate guide, given their absence of realism. Thus any sensible individual should question those who evaluates Machiavelli under an entirely negative light, and thereby mistrust the authenticity of their presumed moral compass...

" He takes his pen to composition and rivals all the masters" did you catch that line? The name is Italian served under the Medicci no mention of Borgia less I missed it but the man reveals himself as a Grandeur of Philosophy not in those word's but the quote. He also mentions that France being of a union force could swallow up Italy not sure it was officially but that has to be Voltaire.

The difference between Machiavelli and our current bureaucratic "elites" is that Machiavelli was totally amoral, but with at least a sense of a higher good: i.e. the protection of the state, which was necessary insofar as it enables the security and viability of the members of that state, the "people". Our current establishment is totally amoral, but in service only to themselves and those they favor. And in doing so, they actively seek to weaken and exploit the people, who they view as "subjects". Machiavelli wanted unity, our "elites" sew disunity to stay in power. Machiavelli would have agreed that these leaders, though possessing almost unlimited power, must have a strong sense of duty and sacrifice. Our leaders just want the unlimited power, which is based only on greed and vanity... and sickening hypocrisy.

Frederic's Anti-Machiavel had a preface by Voltaire. I started reading it but it's a total bore. It can be summarised as "A good prince would never do that because it's morally wrong". After having fell out of the king's graces Voltaire was asked how come Frederic seemed to have been Machiavelli's best disciple when he had condemned him so thoroughly. Voltaire replied: "He spits in the plate to disgust the others"

Not to mention how the gulags were filled first and foremost by their own (than later the masses) who didn't live up to the party's new norms.*

He's not cynical. He's a realist. A cynic is a doubter, he was no doubter. He really did embrace the qualities Nietzsche would champion later. The true morality is one higher than the simple ones he disregards. "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." - Romans 12:2 KJV Were not Machiavelli and later, Nietzsche living this very ideal?
