Edward III was king of England for 50 years, man and boy. 1327-1377
He’s the seventh of 14 Plantagenet Kings who ruled from the mid 1100s to the late 1400s.
He’s known as one of the great Kings of the medieval era.
He’s also responsible for starting the Hundred Years War - 116 year long - between England and France - during which he won stunning victories at the Battles of Crécy and Poitiers.
His son and heir - Edward the Black Prince - would die before he could succeed his father.
Instead, in a story that would later inspire William Shakespeare, two of his grandchildren would be crowned, one of them overthrowing the other - an act which would ultimately lead to the Wars of the Roses.
He’s here in our timeline of Kings and Queens, reigning around 650 years ago.
At the time of his birth in November 1312, his father King Edward II had sat on the throne for about five years and things were very going badly for him.
You can find out more in our previous video, but in a nutshell, Edward II humiliated himself on the battlefield - being roundly thrashed by the Scots at Bannockburn.
He also made powerful enemies among the English barons thanks to his possibly homosexual relationships with two noblemen.
His humiliated wife Queen Isabella ran off into the arms of one of the King’s rivals Roger Mortimer. With Mortimer’s help, the Queen raised an army, invaded England, deposed her husband and placed her son on the throne.
Edward III was just 14 when the crown was place on his head and for the first couple of years, Roger Mortimer acted like it was he that was in charge - not the king.
In 1331 when he was 19, Edward had had enough of Mortimer, overthrew him and had him executed.

The closest we ever got to an actual King Arthur, almost hard to believe that Edward III was real, what with the great military conquests, the Order of the Garter and the creation of a glittering court of spectacular heroes. Great video as always

To add something a little extra to Edward III's military prowess... His famous victory at the Battle of Crecy, also included something not part of this video, in that the battle claimed the life of a King... specifically, King John the Blind, who had been blind for a little over a decade by that point... he was the King of Bohemia ( modern day Czech Republic ) and is today considered a national hero in Luxembourg, where he was also the Count... and his death led to the Ascension of his son, Charles IV... who is considered to have been one of the greatest Holy Roman Emperors.

Edward III sneaked up Nottingham castles caves known as Mortimers hole and took Mortimer, sent him to London and had him killed! You can see Mortimers hole at Nottingham castle today and go through it!

It wasnt the matter of the French "just not allowing" an English king to rule them. It was that the French followed Salic law, which meant that women couldn't inherit the throne, and their descendants were not in line either.

My favorite English King he really was the closest to an actual King Arthur. Also Edward III was not at the Battle of Poitiers it was lead by son the Black Prince.

Does anybody know if Rowan Atkinson got inspiration for black adder from this period of time? I know Blackadder went all the way up to World War I but I believe it started around the time of Edward III’s reign. Thanks for another informative video.🤔👑

2:52 no he wasn't. All of Philip IV's sons had living daughters when Charles IV died. Most of them were married and the majority who produced living descendants had sons. Edward III claim was weak and very few nobles in France seriously considered his claim. The choices were Philip VI of Valois and the couple of Joan II (daughter of Louis X) and her husband Philip III of Navarre.
