The 'horror' of this movie is showing that the 'regular' people are the monsters. Edward is perceived as the monster, but he is the most humane of them all. You're right - he should've had redemption, but the true monsters would never have accepted it. Such a sad story. Great reaction ❤️

He didn't need a redemption arc because there was nothing to redeem. Edward was manipulated into picking the lock at Jim's house, and that was the only wrong thing he did the whole movie. Him killing Jim at the end was completely in self defense. The townsfolk need a redemption arc if anything, lol.

I cried and cried seeing this in the theater and even now it is still so moving. Johnny Depp is phenomenal. Especially when you realize he had probably less than ten lines of softly spoken dialogue yet conveyed ALL the emotions with basically just his facial expression.

This was also horror icon Vincent Price's last film until his passing in 1993. Tim Burton said it was a thrill working with his favorite horror film actor. He even did a documentary called A Conversation With Vincent, which was sadly cancelled and it's been rumored that 20 minutes of lost footage still exists.

They became friends when Price agreed to narrated Burton's first Disney short VINCENT, and sadly EDWARD SCISSORHANDS was the only other time they worked together. Burton was originally going to cast Price to play Santa Claus in NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, but at that point, his voice was described by Burton as "deeply sad and far too quiet" and it simply didn't work well; Price died not long after those recordings

In my mind, I always associated this movie as a Christmas movie. Winona's character pissed me so much when I first watched this cause like you said she never speaks up for Edward until some parts at the end. I guess the intention is if the community believes all the bad things he did and now assumes he's dead, they'll just forget about him and move on, but if he was exonerated, they would continue to bother and use him and I guess Winona's character wanted them to leave him alone.

For Halloween? Oh... no no no guys someone fed you the wrong idea on what any of this movie is about.. there is no horror, no Halloween, it's more like a Christmas movie ... " Then I made myself laugh and thought ... " Like Die Hard " lol. But yeah, long story short, I always thought of this as Christmas related, unless I'm mistaken I think the once a year when it snows the old lady mentions I think it's supposed to be during Christmas time.

I view it as a brothers grimm type story that could have been set in medieval times and made a lot more sense. A character that was completely isolated and alone got to be a part of the community and show his, for lack of a better word, beauty. It's porn for the isolated, good people in a sense.

As you say, "Never judge a book by its cover." But there are other important themes here too, such as the danger of mob mentality once the mob has settled on a victim. Also: the "misunderstood monster" is a trope that goes back to at least the original Frankenstein movie, which of course is based on a novel from 1818. (The Hunchback of Notre Dame is another example of the misunderstood monster, first published in the 1830s. Even The Ugly Duckling is about a misunderstood "monster.") I think these themes resonate because we all have flaws, some well-hidden and some not. And most of us (I hope!) are good, decent people despite our flaws; no one wants to be judged only on a perceived flaw. Making the case even stronger: As with so many people in real life, Edward's "flaw" is not even truly a flaw. He does not have a flawed personality or character; his only flaw is an accident of his birth. (Contrast with Jim (Anthony Michael Hall) who is very flawed human being, indeed.) Because of the way these universal themes are expressed, I do think Edward Scissorhands is Tim Burton's best movie. He has a lot of good, even great, movies. But this one is the best in my view.

My favorite Tim Burton movie! Back when him and Johnny Depp were inspired and creative, instead of now when I almost reflexively yawn if I hear they're doing another movie together. You can tell this one was so personal for Burton, like Edward seems to represent himself as a weirdo misunderstood outcast who's really a sensitive artist underneath. And the dark fairy tale vibe is just so perfect. My other favorite Burton-Depp collabo you guys should watch is "Ed Wood", a movie based on the life of the real film director of the same name from the 1950's who was infamous for his un-watchably bad horror films, including one of the most notoriously awful movies of all time "Plan 9 from Outer Space". Another one that would be good for the spooky season is "Sleepy Hollow", Burton's reworking of the classic American folktale. I love the way Burton reimagines it as a gothic horror-suspense-mystery, with tons of references to the classic Hammer horror films. Plus it's one of the only times Burton ever took a stab at making a straight-up horror film

Great reactions! When it was released, this was the first Tim Burton film I'd seen, and it was him at his best. He centers the story around a character who is "different", misjudged, or misunderstood and shows the beauty of that character despite how others react. I think the theme of being different, misjudged and misunderstood is strangely something that has tended to follow Johnny Depp around in real life. Its like art imitating reality! He was more a rocker who became an actor but was never going to fit the squeaky clean male lead people wanted him to be having had a difficult, unstable childhood, constantly changing schools (being the new kid trying to fit in!). When he made money and bought the Viper Room within 6 months River Phoenix OD'ed outside and he was basically blamed in the press even though he wasn't there, all reports were that River was already unwell on the way in and he had only been in the club an hour. He was unfairly given a bad boy image that followed him around. However most especially of course this theme with the Amber Heard drama of the last few years. Some people, especially the media, just assumed all crazy lies she was telling were true even though, in reality, the evidence showed they made no sense at all. He had unfortunately managed to become entangled with one of the most toxic, unstable, women you could possibly meet. She was very abusive and manipulative towards him and was taking advantage of him. The trial in the UK was absurdly biased against him like something out of a medieval witch trial and even when the jury in the US cleared him 6 years later the main stream media still insisted on spewing inaccurate, negative, miss information about him. Its so much like Edward Sissorhands situation of this film - art weirdly imitating reality!! Hopefully all the toxicity and mis judgement is behind him, but probably like Edward he'll always be the outsider at heart!

Love this movie. The parallels to beauty and the beast are significant! She see's him as a monster but grows to love him. He sees her as an inconvenience but grows to love her. The love interest (Gaston) leads the charge to try and kill him but ends up falling to his death at the castle! Not only do you have the blades for fingers linking this movie to Nightmare on Elm St, but Jonny Depp is in both movies too. He was the one who got sucked into the bed with the TV near the end of the movie.

Ambrosia salad (ambrosia fruit salad) was big in the '70s (and maybe '50s and '60s?). Every family gathering had ambrosia salad. The way my grandmother made it was with mixing red Jell-O and whipped cream (so it would look pink) and adding chunks of pineapple, mandarin oranges, grapes, and with maraschino cherries on top or mixed in. Traditional ambrosia had shredded coconut and walnuts/pecans, and no Jell-O (I think). But my grandmother didn't really like coconut or nuts in things.

Ambrosia is an American variety of fruit salad originating in the Southern United States. Most ambrosia recipes contain canned or fresh pineapple, canned mandarin orange slices or fresh orange sections, miniature marshmallows, and coconut. It was considered "exotic" in typical middle class homes during the time of this film, which is set in the 1980s it seems.

If you haven't seen his versions of the Alice in Wonderland movies they are well worth seeing... One of the few movies I did NOT like was his remake of Willy Wonka. The original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971) is a brilliant movie... it starts out a little slow but as I kid I loved once they got to the factory. Tim's version was called "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"... His version of Mr. Wonka was creepy... the original was weird but in a whimsical way.

This film turned Depp's career around- before he was just regarded as a pin up TV star (21 Jump Street)/teen idol... this set him on path to becoming one of the biggest leading men in film history- and start of collaborations with Tim Burton for decades. If you're looking for some more horror type films for this season- maybe give Rock musical 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' a watch. If you do- keep in mind, seeing it on TV/Computer, etc. won't be as good as seeing it with a live cast in the movie theater- all the crowd participation makes the show, but it's a film you should see- Meatloaf has a song, plus with your music channel should be required viewing.
