The fact that Edward and Winona didn’t see each other ever again was heartbreaking, I know she wanted him to remember her how she was when young but I don’t think Edward would’ve cared no matter her age or how she looked, even if their relationship didn’t continue romantically they could’ve been friends and Edward could’ve had company

That scene with everyone feeding Depp had to be re-shot multiple times. He became physically ill from the volume of food he ate. The entire town where the movie was shot also had what could only be described as biblical levels of bugs on many days and many scenes were canceled due to the bugs. If you pay attention to cloud cover in the sky, you can kind of piece together which scenes were shot across different days.

I saw this when it came out. I was a moody teenager and I identified hard with Edward. An artistic out cast who despite trying to be nice, everyone ended up shunning. Danny Elfman's hauntingly sad sound track still tugs at my tear ducts to this day. I had thr sound track on cassette and anytime I was feeling dejected or heartbroken, I would play this sound track and sob my depression away. I know, seems counter productive, but it worked. So, the movie holds a special place for me.

"Kind of a Christmas movie too" Yeah this movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Batman Returns are all Christmas movies really. They get called the X-Mas trilogy by some fans. Also idk if I'm reading too much into it but the black cop being one of the more understanding characters towards the outsider who the white suburban townies find terrifying and mesmerizing in equal measure really makes me feel very complicated emotions. I don't know if it was intentional but you can almost see it as a commentary on race in American suburbia.
@williamskelton325
@williamskelton325 2 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely agree it's a commentary on Race and acceptance in suburbia. That cop definitely exemplifies that, especially when he is awkwardly the only black person we see in this whole town. Edward eventually becomes at outcast for being "dangerous and different". It's very unsettling on many levels when you really look at it. Sadly...many don't WANT to see that in this movie. But it's there. If it was intentional, it just shows how intelligent Burton is.

The mansion on top of “Mount Doom” is a visual representation for CalArts, the real life art school where Burton studied animation, which overlooks the suburb of Valencia, CA on top of a big hill. (I went there too!) A lot of Burton’s early career movies are about outsiders who don’t quite fit into society as that’s how he felt as a young weirdo artist. Ed Wood, based off of the life of the 50s schlock horror director, is his masterpiece IMO; I would DIE to see your reaction!

@@chance7312 So Paul Reubens, the actor who plays Pee-Wee, was arrested for masturbating in a porno theater in 1991. Is that a little bit gross? Sure. But if the internet had existed back then, he likely would have been doing that in the privacy of his own home. And it's not like he molested any children or raped anyone. He didn't commit any heinous crimes on the level of a Kevin Spacey, or Harvey Weinstein, or Louis C.K. I definitely think it's something that was blown out of proportion, especially in a time when we know that many of the more powerful people in Hollywood were definitely committing actual horrific sex crimes and getting away with it regularly. So I think people need to chill out about this one.

The set design and costumes are EVERYTHING in this film! Also you have amazing comments about this movie! I really like how much you showed how the neighborhood turned on him even when he tried to fit in. That he was such a young soul who did not want the back door salon action! That Neighborhood was thirsty after that teen. I also like how it does not usually snow in the town so she knows he is around. She shouldn't be alone. That Nerd from the Breakfast Club grew up to be an Azz in this movie. Mt.Doom ! hahaha I like how the brother in uniform at the end let Edward free! Made those fake shots at the end so neighborhood watch from conservative hell can leave Edward alone.

This is SUCH a quintessential film for those of us who grew up in the 80s. Rewatching it with your commentary is a JOY. Tim Burton really was a genius, until he wasn't. This and Ed Wood are his best. loved the video, Alanda x for future ones, I’d recommend/suggest: • the lost boys (campy fun 80s vampire movie) • death becomes her (DEFINITION OF CAMPY FUN in a 90s comedy movie with Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis, immortal rich women and Isabella Rossellini as an enchantress) • promising young woman (hard to explain the plot without spoiling, in fact the trailer spoils a lot as well, but basically it’s a mixture of a thriller, dark-comedy and drama and follows a young woman’s aftermath from a traumatic event of the past and the revenge she seeks from it but also has romcom moments) • the slumber party massacre (the title explains the whole movie tbh, it’s a fun, campy, cheesy 80s horror classic) • thelma and louise (follows 2 women who decide to ditch their usual lives for a while and go on a road-trip but something ends up throwing their trip in a completely different direction)

So glad you watched this one! It truly is a unique classic, and I always loved the weirdness of the movie, but somehow I still feel like it's a bit underrated! I love how your reactions to the characters and some sentimental scenes really reminded me of how close to his heart this movie was for Tim Burton. He literally was Edward Scissors hands growing up in a cookie cutter, faux-paradise suburb. I think he got a much happier ending, though! P.S. this movie is now officially the most depressing feature on Disney+ of all places. 😆

This was Vincent Price's last movie. His health was failing and he was suffering from Parkinson's disease which resulted in many of his planned scenes being scrapped. Price is an absolute legend and started off as a leading man and later transitioned to horror roles. Watch Sleepy Hollow next if you haven't. It features a number of Hammer Horror actors including Christopher Lee (Dracula). You'll also see Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine in Star Wars) in a role. Christina Ricci is also in the movie too.

I love this movie so much. It's so poignant, and Johnny Depp gives and incredible performance as Edward. For a kind of similar vibe to Burton as far as dark and gritty/moody, my movie suggestion is The Crow from 1994 starring Brandon Lee. It's about a man who is brought back from death to avenge his and his fiance's murders. It also has three sequels (The Crow: City of Angels, The Crow: Salvation, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer); the first two are pretty good, but the third toes the line of "so bad it's funny," lol.

No way?! I juuust suggested this movie, I’m sure you already had it planned but yay! I just watched this movie for the first time a few months ago and it kind of broke me a little. The music, and it’s so sad!

Peg was such a sweetheart. Even the town was pretty wholesome, until things went sideways. I don't understand why Edward had to stay up there by himself, though... They should've smuggled him back and had him live at the house. He was their family.

Another fun Tim Burton flick is Beetlejuice, starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, and Michael Keaton (making the absolute MOST of his surprisingly limited screen time).

I recommend Ed Wood by Tim Burton! It’s a slightly fictional biography about the “worst” filmmaker in 50s hollywood. It’s very good!!!!

For your future horror vids, I recommend The Faculty by Kevin Williamson. It's a more light-type horror like his other movies Scream and IKWYDLS. Also, Sinister is another really good one that isn't too gory but is definitely up your alley. 😊

The real message of the movie which is so masterfully woven into the subtext that folks seem to miss the first time watching the film is that he has scissors... For hands.

When Peg brings Edward home in the car you see a noy jump onto a slip n slide water tarp. That boy is Nick Carter from the Backstreet boys.

Glad you got to this classic! An absolute masterpiece imo. Esp the Tim Burton/Danny Elfman collaboration. The score to this is perfection (esp the ice scene) and to know he did the Batman score just before it and The Simpsons theme is just crazy! Brilliant reaction as always and Happy Holidays! x
