His style reminds me a lot of Edward Seago's work.
I love his oils even more than his watercolors. There's a lot of experience that went into his artwork.

I love Wessons simple, expressionistic style. He used the texture of the paper and a lot of dry brush work to infer detail without actually painting any. A lot of his paintings were of south East England - Norfolk coast and Fens, Suffolk, the Thames estuary and the Solent. His work really captured the essence of the English landscape of that time. Even today you you can still see some of those scenes he painted virtually unchanged, though much has now been flattened by large scale agriculture and many of the beautiful Elm trees he depicted lost to disease. His skies like Constable, typified the British weather , especially in the days of coal and wood fires. I remember even as a child, times when smog lingered in the mornings and the clouds were pinky brown from the smoke.

I love the painting at 10:50, it has a combination of realism in the sky and an abstract style with soft, muted tones at ground level with the church and trees.

Thanks, Liron! This is the stuff I love. The British/English painters are amazing with their simplified representations of landscapes. Both watercolour and oil. The impressionistic style is my overall favourite. I have been watching Alan Owen for a couple of years now. Ron Ranson painted much like this as well.

The tall buildings on the coast at 14:00 are fishermen’s huts. I presume they were tall so they could hang nets and ropes for repair. This was probably painted at Hastings. Classic English watercolours are my favourite.

Great video Liron. I've known about Wesson for a while and have always liked his approach. But it was when I discovered Alan Owen's channel that I really began to understand Wesson's style. Alan really is a great chap (and the way he can create the most effective sky with just a few strokes of the brush is magical). There are about half a dozen KZbin painting channels that I rate very highly and Alan's is definitely one of those (as well as your own, of course ... ... oh and a quick shout out for Sharon Cullen's channel too). Although I've been in Florida for 12 years now, my first 53 years were spent in England, so it's maybe not surprising that I like Wesson's work so much. Thanks for a great demonstration of his work - and for drawing attention to Alan's really impressive channel. Best wishes, Brian.

.Liked your observations very much on Wesson, one of my favourite artists, so hope you don't mind a couple of comments. We don't really have 'swamps' in the UK. Wesson painted rivers, or ponds & their reflections. At 10.18 the buildings are actually at Greenwich on the Thames, a naval hospital historically but now part of a college & the 'boat' is actually a Thames barge, of which there used to be very many bring goods around the coast from other parts of England up the Thames to London. Often they were crewed by just one experience master & a boy. You see them in the work of Charles Dixon & even JMW Turner 200 yrs ago. A few still remain, kept sailing by enthusiasts. Wesson painted mainly in the S of England, water & oils of the countryside and rivers - see Gravesend pictures. If you want a current UK painter whose work is actually very similar to Wesson and also very similarly skilled see Jem Bowden, watercolour painter. 13.40 is Windsor Castle, one of the Queen's 'homes'. 19.40 is oil. 20.10 some watercolourists will use neat white gauche to put white on dark, see eg Tim Wilmot. 20.30 that wouldn't be an aquaduct, they are very rare in the UK, but a road bridge over a river. 20.52 they are buses, it is of a church in the Strand in London. Just a humble suggestion, but John Salminen, and Chien Chung Wei are both amazing watercolor painters with unique styles. Salminen's brush work is insanely tight and detailed, and the way Chien Chung Wei manipulates color really stands out. It'd be cool to see you do an episode on one of them one day. Hi Liron thanks for the video. Just reading a book by Ron Ranson “Distilling the scene” he is saying Edward Wesson used a large French polishers mop to paint with, instead of the conventional sables. Which I think is amazing. Maybe you could do a review of Ron’s work thanks again.

Loved your review of Edward Wesson Liron, he is one of my favourite English painters and you really did him justice. One thing that intrigues me with his watercolours is the very muted greens in his landscapes, whereas they are more vivid in his oils. I often wonder if these have degraded due to fugitive colours being used or was this how he painted them? You could see it clearly in the two flower paintings, the first in oil depicts green leaves, the second of the roses in watercolour show his typical brownish green. Makes me wonder if he was using something like the old Gamboge? - as that tends to grey out.

That's a great observation! I actually believe it's how he originally painted them. He seems to have slightly different palettes when working in these two mediums. He seems to like stronger (even more artificial, at times) greens for his oils. So happy you enjoyed this one, my friend 😊🙏🏼
