Always wondered what would of happened to the JG Show if it wasn't put up against Bonanza and smashed the ratings. Judy wasn't the gamble some execs thought she would be. She delivered every week.
@akrenwinkle
@akrenwinkle 2 жыл бұрын
The first episode of Judy's show that aired (not the first one taped) beat Bonanza. So home viewers were willing to give her a chance. But by the second week, Bonanza took over, and its lead got bigger and bigger. Judy was terrific, but that particular episode, guest-starring Donald O'Connor, was pretty bad.

@@akrenwinkle I wouldn't say bad but I can see where you're coming from. Just ironic that as the shows got stronger the ratings generally got smaller.

@@karencarpenterarchiveplayl7267 Of course it's very subjective, but I think the first shows taped, produced by George Schlatter, which reflected Judy's personality, should have been shown first because they were better and less cringy than the subsequent ones. I believe there was room for both Bonanza and Judy, but CBS blew it.

And I don't know if you know this . Judy sang this song on her show in honor of her friend JFK , who just a week or two before had been assassinated . The producers did not want her to sing this song (they thought it too political ), nor did they want Judy to mention she was singing this as a tribute to him . When the show was aired , right before she started to sing , she said to the audience ... "Jack , this is for you ." The producers conveniently edited that line out because they definitely thought this was too political to air , and could affect the ratings . (Always money being more important than any heartfelt moment shown , that might offend someone ) I was really amazed that she could even muster up the strength to get through the entire song with the whole world still reeling from the tragedy of his assassination . You can see her slightly get emotional during the performance , but she finds a way to make it through the entire song without crumbling .... because the show MUST go on .

No one gave it their all like Judy did. Performers just "phone it in" nowadays. Everything is done for them before they even step on a stage...they literally show their asses and receive applause. With all of her personal battles, Judy was the epitome of talent.

Yup, and they didn’t have auto tune then. The great thing about that was you can hear the uniqueness of the human voice. Judy, in spite of her tragic circumstances was easily one of the most talent performers of the 20th century.

Interesting to see in color. Miss Garland's great performance. I own the Ray Aghayan gown she wore that night and at the very beginning of the video the color is just about right. It is a very deep vivid red. Covered in sequins, beads, and rhinestones and very heavy.

As I recall (I was 10 when it happened) this was recorded AFTER JFK was assassinated. I remember her saying...."This is for you, Jack" as she used to talk to him all the time when he was president and he'd ask her to sing "Over the Rainbow" for him. I still remember that and I'm not sure why that part has been cut out apparently. Or maybe it was another performance. This song always gets to me.

Well done - I always disliked "colorization," mostly because of a garish/unreal end result. This was as close to the original (real life) as could be expected. This was (for a good many) Garland's best single performance during her year-long television series. Cheers to you Fitzgerald, and I will look for more of your good work! P.S. I won't pretend that I fully understand all of the technical endeavors you described, but it is clear you put much work into this. Cheers and thanks!

EFFORTLESS and without vocal antics.....Every word was understood and no taking breaths that disrupted the lyric to make a show off vocal effect by singing all over the scale on one word. She didn't BS like that to conceal her vocal weaknesses.

@@MattBruns She was paid, in the mid-1940s, about $1,000 a day, 6 days a week for her film work, and allowed to do radio and ads, too, when she chose. She was given prescription benzedrine to get rid of her baby fat during her teen years, and not thereafter... Judy enjoyed them, as well as downers and booze, and procured them herself. Young people today say that rehab clinics were invented by Betty Ford, but they have been around since the time of silent movies. MGM more than once gave Judy time off and paid for her recovery.
