Eddie I’d call it a bad relationship with alcohol!! Been in the same boat as you for over 30 years. There’s no getting away from it mate. No matter how you want to sugar coat it. Eddie, the last time I was in Pattaya I stayed in the Golden Sea. To cut a long story short, while there I had an appendicitis and was rushed to hospital where I stayed for 4 days. After being admitted I realised that I had left my safe open with all my money in it (lesson learned, keep your safe locked even when you are in your room,). Also, my wallet and laptop were left on the desk. I was convinced it would all be gone. But, when I returned, they had removed all my valuables and kept them in the hotel safe for me. And, I had left 2000 bath in a drawer that was still there when I returned to the room. Amazing honesty and typical of so many Thai people. Fantastic

Alcohol is completely fine in moderation. I have the misfortune of having several hardcore alcoholics in my family/peer group and was one of them myself for a couple of decades. I quit temporarily about 10 years ago and what really struck me when I quit was I noticed how the people around me behaved. The people I would normally associate with would get sloppy drunk and would be completely insufferable. I stopped being a heavy drinker around that time and barely touch the stuff today. Nothing is more pathetic in my opinion is people in their 50s, 60s and beyond being a sloppy drunk.

You're in denial Eddy. The longer you stick around these party towns, eventually they will suck you in, particularly if you don't have a lot else to do. Rationalizing having one or two beers on a regular basis is not ok. It's only a matter of time until you let your guard down and you'll be back to your old habits. I know that's not what you wanted to hear but I've been there. As I mentioned in your last video, the quicker you make the transition from "tourist" mode to "resident" mode with a daily routine, the easier it will be for you to avoid the temptation of slipping back into abusing the sauce. "Nobody wants to be on camera..." Judging from the brief glimpse of the 75+ crowd hanging out at the pool, it works both ways...we didn't want to see them either! Thanks for the favour. Nice hotel. Incredible value. Spent two weeks in Chiang Mai in the Nimman area last year and no way you could get anything close to that there.
@carlmay83149 ай бұрын
The problem you have in tourist places is people come over for 2 weeks holiday and get pissed every night but if you are living there full time you cannot afford to do that in many ways, monetary and health wise. Personally I would allow 2 nights a week where you go out have a few beers and then go home. Your health is the most important thing you have as it affects all aspects of your life. I gave up beer for a year and I found myself eating chocolate and other junk and I realized it's not necessarily the alcohol but the sugar and I think most of us are addicted to sugar as it's in everything and is more addictive than heroin. Good luck with your adventures!!

The social conditioning, especially being from the U.K., where one’s abstinence is practically viewed as an affront to all that is British, really does take a while to shift. But, the reality is, alcohol really is an awful thing, and it quite literally poisons us. I really hope you manage to find a path to continued freedom from its clutches, Eddie mate. I realized bargaining with myself about alcohol was a slippery slope. "Just one beer, one drink every once in a while," I'd say, then logic would melt away. "Enjoy life!" I'd tell myself, and give in. Finally, I had to stop cold turkey. Every morning, I start with the promise: "No drinking today." Age catches up, you know? I think it's respectful that you don't feel like you have to be cringey and film the nightlife when people don't want that, especially now that these are your new digs, you don't need that either. Hey Eddie. I’ve turned 57 and ‘somehow’ I’ve managed to stop drinking. My goal is not to quit for life but I just say I’ll stay sober for today/tonight. I spent a month in the Philippines in August and I’m heading back for another month this Saturday. I tried AA and got sober for three months. That’s the longest since I was a teenager! I think for me the hangovers now are just too brutal as I’ve gotten older. I only drink beer but even four or five ruins the next day. Maybe the saying ‘your poison is your cure’ has merit. I’ve also lost weight and discovered I have a lot more time available as a result. Again I’m not going to put on added pressure telling myself that I’ve quit for life because it’s not a moral issue but a health one for me. Thanks for sharing mate. 🙏

Your in Dodge in a Hotel room. Once you get out of Dodge it won’t be as bad. Then once you set up for 6 months in SR or wherever it gets better if you don’t skimp on accommodation & get somewhere your comfortable & feels like a home. You will have your computer set up etc. You get into a bit of a route. There’s plenty to do to get some exercise. The internet alone can keep your brain occupied so boredom isn’t an issue. Loneliness can be though but a lot of that depends on your character. You can make Vid calls to keep in touch with family & friends back & just how great is that when we remember overseas calls costing an arm & a leg. You get & about for your exercise walks or push bike ride you get to know the people at your regular coffee stops & the girls were you get your laundry done. You go out for a drink 2 nights a week or whatever like going pub back home & just like the pub back home you meet people. You start to appreciate the little things.

It seems like you don’t have a useful interest in life that occupies your time. Apart from making KZbin content to subsidise your lifestyle, films aimed at like minded elderly men that have the time to spend watching repetitive diatribes and Pattaya street scenes. Living alone out of a suitcase in a red light district , only having casual acquaintances with mostly pot belly drinkers in bars , and having so much idle time is a recipe for gradual self harm, a few over a long period day after day add up and can end up with all manner of older age health issues. My advise would be to move into an apartment. Find an interesting pass time ( called a ‘pass time’ for a reason.) Use a swimming pool to swim building up the amount of lengths daily as a fitness routine, can’t swim use a gym. If you can’t find friends outside of the tourist bars one way to enjoy your own company will be easy in Thailand , get stoned. Finally most men that visit Pattaya in the elderly / divorced / single group end up supporting a bar girl and her family, and that is a fact because they keep their brains in their trousers.

I'm wishing you luck man, I've been watching Pattaya video's on KZbin for a couple of years since I retired and one popped up on the browser about retiring in the town. Believe it or not I'd never heard of it before! Very sensible attitude to drinking, I played in a good little rock band years back with a top grade singer, I was the guitar player, I found out that no matter how talented you are there's a co-ordination limit to good performance. So I always played sober, maybe half a pint. The singer was brilliant up to 2 pints of Guinness but any more and we were a pub band, really sad! Although I retired, pension and all I still get some private work, so the likely hood of Pattaya is small, perhaps a holiday. I'm enjoying your stories, you had honourable mention by welsh boy webby in one of his shows. I'm enjoying Everything Pattaya and Buzzin' Pattaya and cheep dave. There's quite a few of you guys out there, all different, There's also TNT Tim Newton and of course Steve Rosse of Turtle beech. Best wishes from a cold England

when i was struggling with my drinking it was very similar. on again off again and not feeling well from it. It talks about this in the AA big book, "control" drinking- hard to do. Even when I stopped for a while going back to it, made matters worse. Finally I stopped for good and have not had a drink in 14 years. Thank God - it just got better and better for me the longer i stopped. It is a miracle in my life to be free of it. Just for me, not everyone feels that way. But for me it was the best choice I could have made.

It's difficult to be social and sober in a place where there are a lot of guys with nothing to do but get hammered every day! I've never been a big drinker, I drink one small can of beer every night around 6pm and it's only when I venture south to the coast that I go beyond that. I also don't have much of a tolerance for alcohol these days so, a few beers in the evenings when I'm on the coast is enough. But, it really all boils down to self discipline and moderation. Best of luck with your journey.
@stevenshaw67669 ай бұрын
@@MikeLickorish I said I have a few beers in the evening when I venture down to the coast a couple of times a year. I've never been a big drinker because I don't like hangovers plus I exercise every day in addition to cycling 250-300kms a week.

It would be tough for an “alcoholic” to live in Pattaya! I go to Pattaya twice a year for two weeks and drink beer like an old rock star! I look forward to my return to my home country to dry out!!

If you want to chill out mate, i would suggest getting a long term lease on a condo in jomtien. Much better than living in hotels right in the middle of the nightlife. If you intend to live there, you must have base to call home . Some very good properties to rent here on 1 year leases. No harm in a few beers by the way !

Ed when I’m there I just drink club soda in a nice glass with ice and that’s all I usually drink. Occasionally I’ll have a beer with food. I’m not a big drinker and you don’t have to be. Don’t let people to force you to drink. Yeah, I’m not going out every night and everything. Remember you’re not a two week millionaire anymore you’re just trying to find a good life there in Southeast Asia. Good luck.

Hi Eddy, well done on being alcohol free for 9 months. In your situation I think would set myself limits. For example, I’m only going to drink 2 nights a week and a max of 4 drinks per night. If you’re ever tempted by mates who are out for a big all night session you could try drinking water or a soft drink in between each alcoholic drink. I think when you’re retired it’s also helpful to have a regular daily routine and hobbies and life goals or things you want to do or accomplish. That I think would help to build a healthy, happy and productive life and one that isn’t reliant on bars and alcohol.

There are different types of issues with the drink. Chronic alcoholics who reach for the bottle as soon as the wake. People like myself who were binge drinkers. I could go months with out drinking or wanting one but once I started it was going to be a heavy session. You I would say was a habitual drinker. So change your habits. No drinking at home alone & once you settle some place limit it to couple of nights a week or what ever.

Here n Ireland alcohol is a big problem. I shop in the north and the number of people from the south I see wheeling trolley full of beer out of Tesco is beyond belief. Then the people standing outside pubs in the town having a smoke during the day being unsteady on their feet is quite sad. In Pattaya you see somany guys who are in their 50s 60s & 70s spending their days proped up on bar stools downing bottle after bottle of beers, wheres the fun in that??? Personally I just go to Pattaya for the rotation of female company I find on Thai friendly or visit some of the gents clubs, Knk or the windmill for some hands on fun whilst sticking to soft drinks

If you’re going to stay long term in Pattaya, there are plenty of very nice places for around 10,000 THB/month. They clean a couple of times a week, rather than every day, and you pay for water and electricity on top of the room fee, but the overall price is a much better option than paying 1,000 THB/night in a full service hotel.

Hi Eddy, have you managed to find any ginger beer over here ? When you started drinking Ginger beer it reminded me of when I was a kid and my mates mum used to make some lovely stuff. I moved here 4 months ago and recently discovered a recipe and I'm going to give it a go.... Stick to the beer...nothing stronger and no late nights with days off it and you will be ok. Welcome to retirement and Thailand.

Great video as always and greetings from Saigon. At nearly 70… I never had any need for alcohol or drugs and I am one of those rare people who has never smoked a cigarette of any kind. I have absolutely no idea of what someone feels when they smoke a cigarette or use drugs. Never had any desire for gambling either. But have loved the thrill of pushing a motorcycle to its limits, great music and the company of females. It’s been a great life. All that said… we need to have some type of hobby or passion whether in Southeast Asia where I have been the past 30 years in Vietnam or back in our home countries. In my case it is street photography where I go out and meet people randomly. Then there is the joy of editing and viewing the photos. While editing or viewing I listen to music and vlogs. Listening to a song like Pirates by the British group Emerson Lake and Palmer can put me in orbit faster than a Space X rocket. Wishing you all the best Eddie!

Ed, I'm dependent on alcohol. I need a drink every day to get by. I can't afford to drink anymore but I still do. Quitting is a life long battle. You are in the fight now so don't give up. I have been off the nicotine for two years now and I know that I can quit the booze if I put my mind to it. My problem is I enjoy boozing but simply can't afford it any more so I have no real incentive to quit. Be lucky mate.
@STEADY5999 ай бұрын
Booze is expensive. Last year when people were complaining about rising food prices, my shopping was cheap compared to what I used to spend. All because I'd given up the booze. Best of luck, mate.

I have a very similar alcohol habit as you, gave up for 8 months prior to leaving West Yorkshire & moving back to the Wirral (plastic scouser). I had lost so much weight the doctor took me off blood pressure tablets. First day back I had a couple of pints with my son, bit by bit met up with old friends I hadn’t seen in over twenty years and my beer consumption went up. Cut long story short I’ve put on over two stone & back on blood pressure tablets. I personally find it’s easier to give up than cut down. You are right have no alcohol at home and much easier to control your drinking. Unfortunately I stocked up for Christmas…to be sociable of course. So now I’ve got to start over. Best of luck Eddie, I envy you out there but @ 71 I’ll give it a miss. 👍🤣
@ozzy66689 ай бұрын
I am also 71 and not "giving it a miss" and having a great time in Pattaya. Just got back to my room at 3.30am and will be up for breakfast at 10am. Siesta in afternoon for 3 hours then repeat. Eddy is truly paranoid about alcohol.

Hi Eddie…listen my friend it’s all about will power… There’s nothing wrong with a few beers , at my age I’m an early doors man. So long as your walking everyday and eating well you’ll be fine ; your making a big deal of this. Meet people , don’t explain , don’t complain. You’re getting older ( I’m 67). Relax , eat well , walk and get plenty of sleep….its a natural progression. Regards.
