I love Deutekom's voice. When I listen to Cristina, everyone in my house listens as well. It's not just her coloratura, it's her chest voice in the high register that is truly astounding, always on pitch and forceful. She was unique and Mozart would have loved her.

I am only discovering her no long ago, and I cannot stop asking myself why she is not usually remembered as one of the best sopranos of the XX century (except for the more knowledgeable opera listeners). I have heard her so far in coloratura roles, so when I saw this video of her singing Abigaile I was a bit sceptical. Lord, I was wrong! Her range was immense, and her passaggi were flawless. It is such a pity that modern singers have moved away from this kind of singing!

Heard her twice in Newark, New Jersey. Lady Macbeth and Lucia. Her voice is both gorgeous and TITANIC. Hearing Deutekom in Lucia, hurling effortless high Ebs at your eardrums, is a sensation you can’t forget. What a great, great singer she was. Some people just don’t “get” her, which is too bad. For THEM.

​​@@stefanoferrari8781 , anche io l'ho veduta tante volte. Era una voce enorme, molto espressiva e in alcuni momenti richiesti anche molto violenta. Agilita' e sopracuti da vendere e squillantissimi. Dopo la Callas e' forse la sola che abbia cantato e interpretato Norma in maniera adeguata. Poteva cantare ancora...la salute non l'ha aiutata. E' stata una cantante sottovalutata.

Abigaille is pure bel canto. Why shouldn´t the best Königin der Nacht ever not be perfect for Abigaille or Lady Macbeth? The requirements are similar. Fast coloratura, flexibility and breathing.

Uhhhhh 😮 Abigail’s requires a massive voice and a solid chest voice, but not much hight (a high C at most, I think). Queen requires a stratospheric tessitura and a high extension, and yes with the same flexibility. Not so common nowadays to hear Queens with a big, dark voice. All to say, there are many reasons why a QotN soprano *couldn’t* sing Abigaille - but Deutekom could! A testament to her talents.

It seems incredible to me that she can sing both Abigaille and the QofTN. She's a superb Abigaille. By the way, Robertdonkers, I saw Pauline Tinsley as Abigaille at the Mayflower in Southampton about 25 years ago. She was one of the most popular British dramatic sopranos of the era. Great voice, but Oh God, so ugly (sorry).

@nqqa too bright. the queen of the night is, well, a queen of the night, and should be sung by a darker more sinister voice capable of the sheer nastiness that it demands. personally, I think Edda Moser is unmatched.

Qui credo che Muti non abbia permesso alla Deutekom di fare il sopracuto....lui è filologico (dice) ma nella Traviata alla Scala alla Fabbricini ha permesso il Mi b chissa' come mai? Cristina resta sempre e per sempre una grandissima.

....ma certo, un soprano che ha il Fa sopracuto il Do della cabaletta di Nabucco lo fa senza neppure respirare 🤣..... è Muti che non ha voluto. Ma non importa è talmente perfetta nell'esecuzione di tutte le altre note che va bene pure così.
