Safety relays are used on plant as part of interlock circuits often using coded signals and timing sense circuits to only activate or deactivate without interlock inputs being faulty, such as a stuck switch. An example would be a machine guard for access to moving parts

Yes, usually inputs are combinations of complementary states and/or equal states. You can choose maximum time permitted on invalid state (for example, if you use 2 complementary inputs, it is permitted X time of non-complementary state), if time exceed set, module goes to fault state and outputs are set on low state. Dave, you missed the solderless piercing contacts on the siemens safety relay! The I/O headers are NOT soldered to the pcb, but their pcb tails simply press fit into plated via's on the pcb! This is a technique carried across from high volume automotive controllers (ABS/engine ECU etc) and means faster, cheaper assembly, and a more robust joint as that joint is a physically interlocked metal to metal joint. The unit uses two micros because it is a SIL safety rated unit, so one micro checks the performance of the second one, and on any disagreement the safety contacts are opened.

The relays in those safety modules are special relays too. They are what is referred to as force guided. If a contact becomes welded, the other contact cannot switch. This makes it possible to monitor the contacts for failures. Thus preventing an unsafe condition from going unnoticed.

w.r.t the vive lighthouse: the 3x3 led grid (also?) has red leds, they are part of the system that shows when the 2 lighthouses are synced. The 2 stations use optical syncing, but if they are in a situation where that isnt possible (e.g. large area, angles, reflective surfaces) the 3.5mm jack on the rear is for a sync cable. the 7seg display tells you what configuration the individual lighthouse is set up as, A/b/c mode (A and b for cable sync, b and c for optical sync) It didn't work because the usb port is intended for firmware updates, not for power. Though usually the updates can be run over bluetooth (the power is 12v 2.5a center positive) the g sensor in addition to any use in angle it may have, also allows the lighthouse to flip the 7seg display to be readable if you have it mounted upside down. somewhere on the front top, you missed an rgb led, the main way to see the tracking and sync status. I believe, the horiz and vert lasers flash alternately. The tracking system consists of ir recievers mounted all over the controllers and headset. It takes any 5 of them being triggered to establish tracking, and then any 3 to maintain it, for each part (2 controllers and 1 headset, each need 3 to stay tracked) the 5m*5m space is a very conservative maximum. I have heard of 25m*25m setups using very high mounted lighthouses with cable sync.

Its probably a 2 channel Emergency stop relay for control of a main contactor in an industrial control panel. You should note the relays are large in size as they are safety relays with force guided contacts. There will be two relays with AUX contacts that are cross monitored. If one relay relay is detected as being welded shut the the second relay wont close. So its for fault detection. Timers are usually run down timers so the machine has to come to a complete stop before the safety relay can be re-energised.

It might be clear so that you can visually inspect the relay. When the switch opens or closes while connected to a load there is arcing. The arcs cause the contacts to degrade, when degraded enough it becomes visible. Look up Arc suppression on Wikipedia if you want to know more about it.
@jonathanhendry97595 жыл бұрын
@@MagnusRostedt That's a good point, but I think lots of such relays are used in circumstances where that level of diagnostic examination is unlikely. Like, if one of these relays in the video goes bad, the repair is probably not going to involve desoldering a bad relay and popping a new one in. They're just going to replace the unit that isn't working. And if the relay failure is being investigated in a FAA/NHTSA-type disaster/catastrophe investigation, they could just break open the relays to inspect the innards.

For the VIVE base station it is completely isolated from the headset and computer, but it does communicate with the other base station. Also it dose not power over USB, the USB I'd just for firmware updates. It powers with 12v in the barrel jack. You only need one sensor to make it work, but the second one makes it more stable and makes it work when you hold the controller behind your back. There are several sensors on each controller and the headset so it can triangulate with two or more sensors on the headset and one base station. Once it's running it works well, but the software tends to be kinda glitchey.

Teh safety relay is for systems that require a Category 3/4 or 5/6 safety circuit. It's all about redundancy, monitoring and cross checking of the circuits and systems. In the even of a failure of a circuit or one that is performing out of spec, the system can see that it's happening and then either note it and take no action because there are redundant circuits in parallel. Or the system can take corrective action in response to a failure. We use these in the xray systems I design for the package industry. All the interlocks and controls are controlled and monitored by Allen Bradley Guard Master safety PLC and Guard Master ancillary devices (contactors, etc). So, all the Mechan mag switches (interlocks) on the doors are all two channel which feed into the guard master PLC, the mains to the inverters are all controlled by guard master contactors, the e-stops all have failsafe early break contacts piggy backed on top of the N/C contacts and both are fed into the guard master PLC. The PLC needs to see the early break and then the N/C go open within a certain time of each other or else it will assume an out of spec condition and trip the safety system. As well if the failsafe contact comes loose, it sees that it is no longer attached to the e-stop and it also trips the safety system. If the guard master contactors monitoring circuit senses the contactor not performing, it will trip; the contactors are also double redundant internally for fault protection. I could go on and on and on. Its good kit and you don't really know what the stuff is unless you work in a field that requires it.

You can always cross any light beam without any consequences. That's because Maxwell equations are linear. Just like two people talking in a room will not change their voice or anything. Or just like two signals on a cable or in a fibre. Of course, where the beams cross, there can be interferences, but this will not change de beams. Moreover, in this case, there's not interference because they are two different lasers (mutually incoherent light sources).

The serrations are there to avoid multi-path. There should only be one light path. At obtuse angles almost anything becomes a reflector.

The Schneider unit looks like it was designed with a repair engineer in mind. It would be easy to pop open the case, hook it up to your test rig and probe around the circuit. And, of course, re-assembly would also be quick and easy.

The irony of the ST download website text about the Windows 10 driver sitting right above the Device Manager window the last minute of the video 😂. ST really goofed that user experience up something fierce.

@@EEVblog Well missed or not it certainly did not work with the inbox Win10 driver anyway so that gives a point to the Win10 bashers about its fantastic support ;)

To make it worse, it didn't work with the inbuilt win 10 drivers because they are much pickier than the linux CDC drivers or ST's drivers for windows 7... Working on Win10 support now, it doesn't correctly honor "use interface level class & subclass" and "don't send me line control codes" settings. Even with the CDC ACM bmCapabilities set to 0 it still tries to send LINE_CODING and SET_CONTROL_LINE_STATE commands I wasn't handling - because I told it not to send them!

Started getting it to work, can open the port now. Just need to add some code to deal with Win10 oddities.

The connector that dismount from the relay it is to simplify wiring. You pull the connector, wire your cables and reconnect. when you have 1000 wires in a control panel and you want to replace something is very difficult to pull a relay from a din rail.
