"Bad product design" you say about the EDS mat roll not being able to roll out by itself. If it was rolled the other way, the corners of the mat would bend upwards from the table, thus not being perfectly flat.

You're probably right. But I really couldn't imagine that a guy like Dave would anywhere be happier than with himself in his lab. Big money would probably only destroy that. And last but not least: He wouldn't have time to make videos anymore...

Hey Dave, to get rid of the nasty 1 cm overhang, I'd make little cutouts where the shelf's supporting struts are and then move the whole mat back by 1 cm.

I would cut notches in the esd matting at each shelf support. Making the notches just deep enough to allow the matting to slide back enough to make it flush with the front edge of the bench.

It is at the edge of the bench, it butts up to the shelf supports.

EEVblog Did someone measure from the back wall and forget to account for the shelf supports sticking out? ;) Instead of cutting off that big long strip of matting along the front, you could just cut notches around the shelf supports and slide the whole mat backwards.
@MalawisLilleKanal
@MalawisLilleKanal 10 жыл бұрын
Was thinking the exact same thing. :-) Cutting will also be pretty hard to get nice and even for such a big bench.

I was thinking the exact same thing :) Cut 10mm notches in the mat around each of the shelf supports and drag the mat in towards the wall by 10mm. I couldn't put up with a 10mm overhang at the front. Anyway, great video Dave.
@KOTR2003
@KOTR2003 10 жыл бұрын
Those shelf supports are clearly more than 10mm, so I do not think it is a case of mis-measurement. They look to be at least 1" square supports.
@ForViewingOnly
@ForViewingOnly 10 жыл бұрын
***** KOTR2003, I don't think you understand what's been suggested. Have a re-read. If the shelf supports are more than 10mm deep then the above suggestion would work fine. Dave only needs to lose 10mm at the front of the mat.
@KOTR2003
@KOTR2003 10 жыл бұрын
ForViewingOnly Or perhaps you need to re-read what I put. Those shelf supports are clearly greater than 10mm. Also, he said the rolls come in 600/900/1200 mm and he measured the width to be 910mm. I am not seeing what you are trying to prove here, as the roll is 10mm wider than it was sold as.

You HAVE to get rid of the overhang! Even if it's just by moving the mat back 1cm and having a small fold near the struts for the shelf. I had that once on the desk (not with an ESD mat, but a general rubber work mat) and it was on of the most annoying things. It will always catch something, pulling cables up will pull the mat with it, things to be clamped to the edge of a table were sometimes impossible to mount (because they left no room for any overhang). Do it before the mat gets messy again ;)
@winstonsmith478
@winstonsmith478 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that would drive me nuts, but I'm neat. ;-) If there's no way to fold it over in the back, as is probably the case, align it as you want it along the bench, mark mat on both sides of each shelf support, slide it away from the wall, cut out 1cm deep notches at each shelf support location, slide it back.
@ad4m1

Lovely setup. Same product as we used for the 12 ESD mats at our work. Fantastic product. Cannot fault it, and we test our mats daily too and we have yet to have one fail yet, even after the 7 years we've been using them. The reason why they roll it up the "wrong" way round is because it's easier for the mat to settle with the fold facing down than the fold curling upwards. Means your mat sits nicely right away after laying it. :-)

For your Workbench-PC: Have you considered one of those Video Capture cards? I don't know in detail, but they should encode the video on the fly (no need for beefy CPUs). If that's within your budget, you can build a tiny Mini-ITX system with a cheap CPU, SSD, wireless keyboard + mouse. Every modern Mainboard has USB3. This way, you can just set a tiny ITX case on your rack and keep the bench clean.

You have to take care of that overhang! An easy fix may be to notch out the back where your shelving arms are so you can slide the mat back a bit. Or just do it right and cut down the entire length and turn the mat around so the cut side is in the back.
