We once told a trainee that the arrow on a radar cable (between the display and the scanner unit) had to point in the right direction otherwise the image would be turned upside down .... it took quite a while before he realized it. For those who wonder: the arrow does indicate the correct installation direction, but only for convenience of connection. (because the wires through the cable spiral) it is easier to connect in the right orientation (the left one is a bitch)

Awesome! I have that exact kit from when my brother and I were kids. I also have the 60-in-1 kit. Some years ago I posted a good quality scan of the 200-in-1 manual to the forum, but I see in the post for this episode, Tandy has posted a link to a bigger version. Hey Dave, I have to say, you're a really good dad. You're patient, you teach rather than scold, and you show a genuine interest in spending time with your kids and helping them learn new things. A lot of other dads could learn a lot from you. In another 20 years, I could see Sagan starting to take over the channel...EEVblog, The Next Generation.

I learned electronics as a kid on the EXACT SAME projects kit!!! Very good kit, with an easy to read very detailed manual that progressively teaches you increasingly complex circuits. Lots of fun too and lots of possibilities beyond the 200 circuits in the book. Once I was done them all I started combining circuits, and eventually coming up with my own circuits.

Dave, Watching you and Sagan work together and his joy at discovery, it brought a lump to my throat and a tear to my eye. i remembered my first science/electronics kit and working w/ my dad to do the "experiments" . Somewhere between about 1958 and 1961 (I was born at the end of 1954), my dad got a kit for electrical learning; it had a "D" size carbon-zinc cell, wire, light bulbs, nuts and screws (around #6-32 size), some spring brass strips, a fiber tube, a nail, some colored plastic dome lenses for the lamps, and an injection molded plastic "breadboard" to build simple circuits with single and multi-positiion switches , an electromagnet, a solenoid, lamp selectors and other simple demonstrations. A few years later it was a Bakelite "Heathkit" 5-tube AM AC/DC table radio, and from there on I was hooked for life on electronics. Thanks for that video and the warm memories it brought me back to. I've had relatives all around east and central Texas, down to Houston, visited Galveston etc but that and ElPaso/big bend is about as close as I got. Duuude!!! This was my first kit I bought for $2 at a flea market when I was around 10 years old. I learned everything I could from that wonderful book and eventually dismantled the kit for parts when it had nothing left to teach me. Three years ago when I had my first kid I went on eBay and bought another one in great shape hoping to do exactly what Dave is doing here -- and I'm glad I got mine before this video was made because I'll bet they're all gonna be gone now! These were great kits and obviously had a lot of impact on all of us...

Can’t believe that Sagan is already 7! I now realise I’ve been following the eevblog for a long time now:-). I also started around 7 with the 50, 75 and 150-in-ones then switched to the Phillips EE 2000 series all the way up to the EE2007 (scope..) as they were quite popular in Europe at the time. All kits still laying around and working (hopefully). Add a few years of tearing down everything and messing around with uv lamps, perchloride and shortwave radio and aiming for EE studies at 18 had become a no-brainer. Looks like Sagan is on his dad’s trail !

You had IC's in your kit? I'm a bit older, and my 150-in-1 just had transistors. But after I built every project, twice, annoying my parents with scratchy noises and beeps, then came the next phase... my mom worked in building that had a Radio Shack. I would give her lists of things to buy-- components, enclosures, and eventually blank PC boards and bottles of ferric chloride. I made so many mistakes, but that's how you learn. Now I'm 53 year-old software engineer, but I still remember the endless fun of my 150-in-1.

I had both the 150 and the 200 kits, and IIRC they BOTH had ICs. The 150 in 1 kit had some kind of analog audio amp in a SIP package. The 200-in-1 had a 7400 and a 7476.

I had the exact same model and I think my manual is in about the same condition! Got it from a garage sale as a kid. It was the catalyst for me becoming an electrical engineer! Those were all such wonderful little kits and accessible introductions to electronics, glad to see Sagan excited to play with it.

Still got mine in the loft. Replaced the LEDs and added a power socket to save on batteries way back when, but apart from that it's as is, and I'm sure it'll still work nearly 40 years later!!!

I lusted after these kits as a kid. I read the 1977 Tandy catalogue a billion times and just had to know what all the components did so I went and got library books out on the subject. I learnt a lot without actually doing anything practical. Then one day I found $20 under an old mower in the junk pile at the local mower shop. I told the owner and he let me keep the money so I ripped down to Tandy under Sundale Shopping Centre on the Gold Coast and bought $20 worth of transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors, battery clips, blah blah blah. It's amazing how expensive the components were in the day. I think you'd get 100 times as much these days.

Wow memories! I had one of these (still have somewhere) as well as a 100 in 1 and a 20 in 1. Was a great way to learn. When I ran out of components I'd use two or three of the kits together. Was a great foundation in electronics. Thanks, Dave and Sagan.

The notes on page 7 of the instructions about keeping a notebook reminded me of Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" where he talks about using Scientific Method in problem-solving and the importance of keeping a notebook. It's good to teach them proper methods at a young age!

When I was 8 I was already interested in electronics after I saw on TV how a kid constructed a radio with a large variable capacitor, a diode and few components, and I wanted to build one too, it seem amazing to me! 2 years later a guy came and started an electronic club at school, and there I learn a lot about components and I did some practice. Since then I've got in love with electronics.

Wow, that brings back memories. I just came back from the basement and checked on my 200-in-1, and I'm proud to say it's still with me after all these years, and in pretty complete and good condition too -- unlike myself. :^\ I even still found the original receipt dated May '82, bought from Tandy in Melbourne for (then) whopping $55. And good on ya for getting your son involved; I wish my parents had fostered my interest in electronics and computers back then. Alas, they didn't care, had no interest in the looming digital revolution, and even actively discouraged me. So I invested in my future out of my own pockets. Sagan is one lucky kid, and I wish him a bright future! :^)

I was so lucky my dad still had all of his from being a kid and let me use them. He had the couple different old 10in 1 radios the wood 50in 1 you showed , a wood 160in1 and the highlight 200in 1 . At the time radio shack was still open he bought me the modern 130in1 too. I didn’t realize as a kid other kids didn’t know how to build electrical circuits.

I had one of these kits for the first time in the year 1990, a replacement in 1996, and also another one around 2009. They are very easy to find and use. You should build the One Transistor Radio circuit, AM Broadcaster Circuit, and Crystal Set Radio circuit if you're into radio communications.

I got the same thing from Tandy when I was a kid, although the front panel on mine looked different the board layout, components and projects were all the same. I still have it somewhere but one of the NPN transistors blew out and I have not been able to source a good enough replacement. I must have spent thousands of hours playing with it, doing every project and then some. Later when I started designing my own circuits I would often use this kit to test out my ideas. The transistor blew when I accidentally bypassed a current limiting resistor when making a change to an audio low pass filter I was testing out.

Great video! Brought back lots of memories of childhood. Had the 150 and 200-in one kits at various points. I remember making a wrong connection and blowing out one of the transistors and actually troubleshooting it by checking the junctions with an even more primitive Radio Shack VOM than the one Dave used. Had to go to RS and part with $1.39 or whatever for a new 2N2222 off the pegboard. Good times.

Got one of those kits quite a long time ago for Christmas, and I still have it - in great/mint condition too :-) I also got the Gakken EX-150 system when I was about Sagans age, and boy those denshi blocks with multiple components inside made it nearly impossible to build something on your own. I had the 50 in 1 kit back in the day. The frame was made of wood. Many hours put into troubleshooting. Found a snapcircuit kit for my daughter, but she is more interested in wires :)

I still have my 200 in 1 and 150 in 1 from when I was a kid. I use mine in my Tesla Coil youtube video (using the 200th experiment - transistor checker). I was going to ask about the LEDs but you just answered my question in the video. BTW, I drew up a schematic of the 1st experiment - Wheel Of Fortune (even modeled the NAND/FF/LED part of the circuit in Logisim). I might someday make a video of the Wheel of Fortune.
