Yeah the switches being clipped into the metal backing plate and then being soldered to the PCB is common with mechanical keyboards. Seems like they just followed the standard procedure there. That jog wheel looks nice, wonder how I could get my hands on just one of those on its own ^^"

339€ incl. VAT and LICENCE - so same price as the licence alone from the manufacturer shop. Looks beautifull crafted and not like they had to cut the cost. I still remember when I held a 3d mouse for CAD for the very first time in my hand with all its weight and functions. Great experience.

Black magic make a bunch of keyboards, they may be sharing the same PCB on a few models which may explain the cables to connect the PCB's. I got mine, the knob is amazing but I hardly use it. Your editing style needs to match the layout or your mostly going to be using a keyboard and mouse anyway, so it's over on the side gathering dust. Still amazing price for what you get.

looks pretty nicely put together. Mildly curious which mechanical switches (or at least which manufacturer) they went with. Have you seen those projects using a BLDC motor as a software controllable haptic knob? I'm surprised I haven't come across one used as a HID for a pc yet. Not entirely sure how practical it would be, but the novelty is there for being able to do something like simulate a hard stop at the end of a timeline or light detents at each second/minute/etc
@azyfloof

Apparently they're Kailh brand switches. Just watched another teardown :)
@max_kl

I guess the problem with such a haptic knob would be the high power requirements. The Logitech MX Master mice have electrically controlled detents on the scroll wheel that work magnetically, which seems to require hardly any power at all

Love that extra support on the USB port. That should cut down on the number of detached ports from abuse. That weighted knob looks like it feels fantastic too!
@Gameboygenius

They could also have taken a note from phones/laptops. Place the USB port on its own little board with a cable running over. Reduces the leverage that the plug can put on the solder joints, plus it allows solderless replacement if it does break.

I'm getting increasingly disenchanted with USB-C for power delivery on laptops, it's doing okay on phones but I've broken one laptop connector on a Dell Latitude laptop and one on a Razor laptop. The most frustrating thing is that, looking in the Dell, it's a nightmare to replace the connector because of the number of pins on it (compared to the old coax cables). I think laptop manufacturers need to think about making the USB-C connectors (especially the PD ones) a separate, field replaceable board.

5:49 This is a normal arrangement for high quality mechanical keyboards. Having the switches clipped into the metal sheet means that the mechanical force from your finger is transferred into the metal, not into the circuit board where it would eventually break solder joints and traces from flexing the board. And the metal plate being heavy dampens the sound of the switches as well as stopping it sliding around. The board is suspended off the pins of the switches so that's a really nice for both construction (no need to screw the board in place) and eliminating stress to the board during use. Also the lack of flexing when pressing keys feels better and more consistent. So it's all really nice although they don't mention what brand/type of switches are used on their website. They just say "switches that egamers use" which could mean anything.

This looks like something from the era of analog video editing. I've been editing videos for 30 years and working with computer graphics, and I've never really found these devices to be truly useful in digital editing. But damn, it's cool as hell! Super cool!

I'm super sad that you didn't show the jog dial in more detail in more detail :O I woulda loved to see how that worked, and I know I'm not the only one here! I'm guessing it's a weighted knob on a bearing assembly so it's silky smooth, but I'd love to see if it's using a slotted wheel and an optical quadrature encoder, like an old style ball mouse, or if it's using hall effect sensors or something else. Please show us more!

If you worked professional/broadcast video through the 70s and 80s, that kind of quality engineering & assembly was fairly common in high end equipment. Yoummy find there’s an adjustment for the friction/resistance on the jig wheel… in the ‘old days’ that was quite common.

Been working with this device now for around 12 months. It truely is a nicely crafted device, I don't think anything of it needs to be made better - aside from maybe having a dedicated power off switch. I was a little surprised they got a standard 18650 battery in there, I expected something larger. But then again, you don't need something larger. The battery needs to do very little and it easily lasts 30 hours of editing. And if for some reason that's not enough for somebody, the housing seems to have enough space, so that you could add a few more cells to this one, connect them all in parallel and you might have a device that last you 2 months on a charge at daily editing.

@@r_firefly4292 The key caps can be removed simply by pulling them off the switch, it's the switches that can't be easily removed. With that being said, it is most certainly a red switch. @LaughingBuffaloes

@@r_firefly4292 Those keycaps should pop off with a little force. Should be just press fit. They look like German made cherry MX red's to me. The side view at 7:02 shows the side of the casing, which looks like cherry's and I can see the red plunger under the keycap. The pinout on the bottom of the board with the black plastic nub in the center and the 2 pins look like cherry mx style too. I could be wrong, but that's my best guess based on what I can see.
