Thanks, this is helpful. But even after googling for 30 min. I cannot find a way to increase playback speed to 2x, 4x, etc. Does Speed Editor not have it? I'm looking for the alternative to pressing the "L" key. Can anyone help?

Dude, BMD needs to hire you to show people how to use their products. This is an amazing set of tutorials you have created for the speed editor. Thank you so much. I just got mine in a couple days ago and this is helping a ton. Not sure if anyone else had mentioned it but I wanted to add that you can also clear both in and out points by just clicking IN and OUT at the same time. Thanks again, Chadwick!

Ah man that's what I love about youtube - I didn't know that about clicking them at the same time! Awesome Justin. It's great to hear these tutorials have been helpful - that's been my hope. And great to hear you've been able to get a hold of a speed editor - they sure have been slow to roll out. Thanks again for your support and encouragement.

Once again dude, thanks so much for these videos. At this point they’re pretty much the default manual for the Speed Editor. At first I wondered why they added these double tap functions with it as opposed to making them dedicated buttons, but now I realize that it’s a great decision - it keeps it small for one thing to navigate around it quickly, but also there’s so much thoughtfulness in the layout. Having either the in or out point be able to clear those points too is great, not to mention the Undo function: if it was its own button it would be easy to bump by mistake and wonder what just happened; instead, it’s in a convenient location but hard to hit accidentally. Great design!

I recently happened upon a thread where people were discussing the "clicky" nature of the search dial. Speculation about whether or not it at least sends out a signal that's just currently not used. Someone would be able to figure that out with a USB data-interpreting oscilloscope or other device. But regardless of whether or not it actually does something, there was of course a hypothetical discussion about the kind of function it could serve. Since the dial has very little resistance, it's hard to click the dial without inadvertently turning it, so it would have to be something where turning the dial doesn't mess with the functionality. An interesting suggestion was to have it trigger a battery level readout, by illuminating the three keys just above the dial to indicate the charge level. It was particularly interesting because this wouldn't even require sending out a bluetooth or USB signal. It would all be internal, activated by a firmware update. But then that comes back to whether or not the speed editor "knows" that the dial is being pushed down. I have a feeling it doesn't.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
I love the idea of making it change resistance but I’m 99 percent sure there are no electronics in that click.

Thanks for the great video that gets to the point Chadwick. I just picked up my speed editor this morning and even as a beginner, the transport section alone has sped up my productivity right after plugging it in. After a few hours with it, I pulled up BM's manual and immediately became frustrated because they buried all the use of this hardware inside DRS18's 4,000 page manual. They need to take notes from your and Darren Mostyn's videos. Many thanks again! You've saved me from a lot more frustration and loss of time which I don't have before my deadline. I am subscribed going forward! 🤘❤

Thanks for this, very helpful!! I just ordered the Loupedeck CT to take over from the BMD Speed Editor which I've had 18 months. The Speed Editor is just so frustrating! The Bluetooth has never worked (not even once) and I have to plug & play the USB-C connector to my PC up to 17x just to get Resolve Studio to recognize that's it there. Also having 9 Cam buttons is ridiculous for an entry level device and buttons that have never been used, as well as a jog wheel with button function that isn't utilized at all. Lucky for me is the Speed Editor was free with the software (cost the same as the software without the Speed Editor included).

Great tips as usual! I wonder how many “Easter eggs” are hiding in this device? One I’d like to discover is next/previous clip. I am a little surprised the speed editor doesn’t offer that functionality explicitly TBH, because while the wheel is amazing for trimming and other precise precise motions, jumping whole clips when browsing the source tape would be very efficient (for my workflow and preferences, anyway). I am very fortunate to have a micro panel as well so my solution, for now, is to reach up to it to do next/previous clip (yes, it works in the Cut page!). As a side note, I notice that occasionally I get stuck seemingly “zoomed in” to one clip in the source tape occasionally (basically one clip takes up the whole source tape). Haven’t figured that one out yet. It takes me out of my flow, and I usually just toggle views around until it gets back to normal, but I’m sure it’s an intentional feature that I just don’t understand. Any thoughts on that?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 3 жыл бұрын
That's a great point about the micro panel having next and previous clips buttons - I use to have a mini panel at my previous job - but now I feel jipped they didn't put this on the speed editor! Ha. They really want you using that search dial. Said to say but I"m 99.9% sure this doesn't and probably won't appear on this version of the tool. For you "zoomed in" view. Yes you actually tapped into another feature there. I forget which video I cover this in but basically tapping source when you are in source tape is supposed to zoom into whatever your current i/o marks are for source tape. This gives you a much closer view. The way you go back out to the full source tape view of it all is one tap of the "esc" key. So you can even get down to a 5 second or so view of a clip in source by just marking i/o on a day long of source tape for more precise visual and control - then with esc - jump back out to the whole stringout/reel from your day.
@mike.thomas
@mike.thomas 3 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips We can always hope, I guess, re the next/previous functionality, but yeah, it might be too much to wish for. Thanks re the “zoomed in” view. I’m sure that’s it, because I often hit “Source” just as an extra insurance, like a nervous tick (if you’ve ever used the geeky text editor ‘vi’, it’s like hitting the Esc key constantly there). Now I realize I probably should not do that! I’ll definitely try Esc when I get into that mode again, and will try to make positive use of the feature, as well.

Hey that's great to hear the videos are helpful. The "free" speed editor certainly makes it more manageable to spend the extra money. One big key thing the paid version will get you is access to multiple GPU rendering, so if you have a solid computer - the software will run faster, also the other issue I see a lot is the 10 bit footage not being supported on the free version. The main things I would like to speed up is scrolling easily through clips to find the places I need to cut out, fast easy transitions, fast ways to zoom in, and maybe a few more things. I have a 27" iMac from late 2015 with 24 GB ram. I have been using the free version 16 of Resolve. Do you think the Speed Editor would really help to make editing smoother and faster even though at the most I would probably not be using a lot of cameras and multiple clips? Also I had been mainly using the Edit page but I think I need to learn the Cut page. I used iMovie for a few years but there is quite a learning curve for Resolve but it is also amazing. There is no way I would be able to learn how to use it without some great KZbin videos like yours!

you are too kind Gayle - I have a very similar iMac to yours! I would start with playing around in the cut page a little more first to see how you like working with "source tape". Several of the tutorials on here talk about source tape - but that's the magic of the cut page. If you like it with a keyboard and mouse, then you'll really like it with the speed editor. Cut page is really about scanning through all your footage real fast to get some clips down into a timeline. It's also very similar to Final Cut/iMove on track 1 which is "magnetic". If you dig it - then for sure pickup the bundle while they still offer the speed editor for free with resolve.

I learned a lot! managed to edit a full interview only using the speed editor following your advice but still I don’t know if this can do the “broll montages on the music beat” kinda videos
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 3 жыл бұрын
That's so awesome! Now that you have that first full interview done - it's only going to get easier and faster from here on out. One thing to try to see if it works for you with "music to the beat" kind of videos would be to use those makers a lot on your music (bounce between edit page and cut page) - and then try keeping your "b-roll" or your timed cuts all on V1 so you can ripple trim in/out as you go.

thanks learned a few new ones, but you missed triple tap the mark/audio level button will open the marker detail box, instead of doing it as a two step process (double tap to add, and double tap again to edit). has me wonder if there is any other triple tap action hidden... :P

3 years using the Speed Editor and I finally find out how to use the functions on the front of the keys🤦‍♀️ I should have used the manual.

6:08 What is the point of double-tapping and holding the Title function? That is fantastic though that function is there, so helpful. I don't get why there isn't a function to just double-tap and add a title at the location. I am trying to find the "Speed Editor" in the 18.6 manual, but "Speed Editor" doesn't pull up anything, though I have found both on several pages.

I sure wish there was but it’s only y position with the speed editor. You need to open the transform tool to move left and right.

You forgot my favorite double tap on the Scrl button to move around faster in your timeline ! REALLY useful when you have LOT of footage in your source or timeline. There the double tap on the Source button as well which bring you closer to your selection. There is a more but I don't remember by heart since I don't use them. One video I would like to see from you (if you haven't made one), is your workflow to assemble a dialogue scene, where you need to mix and match between lot of different take ! I feel my current workflow is really painful. Oh, one 'bug' that people should know ! When you have an In/Out point selected in your TIMELINE... All the function stop working like expected ! I had to stop working on a project because I just couldn't put stuff in my timeline where I want, it would only paste at the beginning for example.

Interesting Marc - I was unaware of the scroll button being able to do that. I'll check that out. I think the source tap you mention is something I just mentioned to Mike in these comments - that one I think (at least for me) works when you set an i/o point and then a single tap of source to zoon into the selection. Maybe there is a double tap to it too? Either way thank you for your comment and extra tips! Your dialogue cutting video suggestion is a good one. The most relevant thing I would suggest you check out on creative video tips is the different ways of viewing and cutting in selects. I'll link that here for you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYO8hKqag52rl6s My favorite way to cut narrative work from selects reels has traditionally been in Avid going from source to record, timeline to timeline (this is a more efficient way then the popular pancake dragging a lot of guys do nowadays) - but I'm trying to embrace and learn the cut page source tape now so that is always evolving. Anyway - I go over all 3 of these selects methods in that video and I think you'll find it useful. One more thing - that I will for sure do a video on at some point - Take Selectors - for now google it or there is probably a video on it, but it's basically what FCP calls an Audition. A way to kind of nest possible good takes into one container on the timeline. I can't say I use this a ton but its a cool feature. Interesting about that bug you found. Cheers dude!

@@CreativeVideoTips What I would LOVE is the ability to create different Source group, and like a Hold on source to get a view of the different source group and switch between them ! So I could have the few stuff I find interesting in a source group, and just switch between those instead of the while source ! I know there is a way to double Source button to zoom in in a particular folder... But it been zooming on my in/out selection personally... I need to look at the manual and to try to understand a bit more the source selector, because it is what I waste my time the most ! Maybe having the option to add Tag maybe in the source, and have a way to scroll between those tags... Maybe something exist, but if not, something is needed, because that what bug me the most with it ! The director is next to be, and as me to go back to that previous clip for example... And that clip is somewhere in a 4 hour source ! Where the different take were all done in different order... But That said, maybe creating bin and ordering my different shot before I start my edit would be what I actually need ;)

@@mochouinard I think you are on the right track about bin organization at the end of this comment. Although I really hope we can communicate all this to Blackmagic at or before NAB this year so they can use it to improve things on the next software or hardware iteration. These a big pain points.
