When I went to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington DC a few years ago they had a sign hanging above one of the printing presses: "Free samples. Tomorrow only" I thought that was nice 😉

I have one of the Charles &Diana Crowns, that was Mis-Stamped, I sent it to the Royal Mint in Llantrisant South Wales, And received a nice letter from a Professor who authenticated the coin for me and explained how it became Mis-Stamped, and should not have got past Quality control, -he also said it was the first one he had seen, other than two more from the QC at the mint. I have no Idea of it's value or if there are any more out there, Would love to see your collection.

My claim to fame, during my fitting and machining apprenticeship I want to trades school with an apprentice from a precious metal stamping company in Melbourne that knocked out the coin blanks for the mint, amongst many other things. He used to say walking out at the end of a sunny day workers’ clothes would be and nice and glittery. (and his boss used to vacuum up all the slivers, shavings and swarf when a run of expensive metal was complete)
@dglcomputers1498 Жыл бұрын
No surprised you'd end up all glittery, I get glittery enough just cutting keys at work.

Dave at the 15 minute of your KZbin mark the machine is a grinder. Where the work is held down the table slides side ways to the operator (up and down to us). Similar to the pink wheel at the rear of the machine (very soft wheel).

2 barrels then you refurbish the die set. As they are not proof minor wear is tolerated, as the coins will wear in service anyway, but they do last a much longer time than notes, so there likely are still old original press coins around. Fun thing is the old brass and nickel coins are actually worth more as scrap metal than as coinage, so there were a few "enterprising" types who would melt them down for scrap metal, though they were eventually found out, and probably still are a "guest" in the grey bar hotel, for destruction of mint property.

@@costerth The mint by me does a big part of their business in doing Euro cents, which is why you find so many country coins are the same diameter and thickness, because they all use the same metal blanks as source.

Over here in Turkiye, the largest coin in circulation is the 1 Turkish Lira. It is worth 0.042 US$ as of today. Fun fact; the government actually loses money on every coin pressed because the cost of material (an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc) + production of each coin exceeds its monetary value.

Australia makes plastic banknotes*! * Australian banknotes are printed on polymer, a type of plastic, and they have a distinctive feel. Polymer banknotes were developed to make our currency more difficult to counterfeit. The polymer makes it possible to include a range of security features on our banknotes.
