@14:00 I think that green seal is a sealant that is added after being clipped together, to glue it shut.

Green material is probably some sort of epoxy or photo cured plastic. You didn't need to open this to replace a battery, so it was permanently sealed. Until you broke into it which was somewhat difficult.
@AstralS7orm

Not that difficult. Drop it a few times and you might get unlucky. It's a similar material to conformal coating. Rubber is much better, including urethane.

The green is most likely a kind of glue/expoy, I have seen that a lot of times in similar applications, when you look at it under a microscope you can see that it perfectly fits into the imperfections of the outer part.

Hey, my favorite line of running mp3 player/bluetooth headsets to be destroyed at the hands of Dave... noice. xD I guess not many people know about this line from Sony, but it's currently in the... probably 6th or 7th iteration since the first model, and Sony has been extremely good into listening to user requests and improving the design overtime. It's not super cheap, but they really listened and invested into attending user requests for this product line, major respect. Size, weight reduction, bluetooth capabilities, having some way of adjusting the neckband length and tightness, ambient audio passthrough... each iteration they add something that is being requested by users. This used to be an mp3 player only headset, Walkman line. Bluetooth came... pretty late into the game actually, first model with it being the previous to this one. I can get how lots of people just hate this design... looks weird, the in ear thing really hurts after a while, it's really bad if it doesn't fit you well. But for a few people, it's just this or nothing I guess. That's probably what's keeping this line going on for all these years... Over the years, I tested well over 20 different mp3 players for running and bluetooth headsets. If you add wired phones with smartphone on bracelet style case or some sort of pouch/fanny pack... that would be something closer to 50 different headphones. All of them without exception get dislodged from my ear or just plain drop out once I've ran juuust a bit and sweat becomes involved. All of them... except for the headphones from this line. I also tried regular buds, those won't stay in place even when I'm not running. I tried those with different types of caps or extra support that goes around the ear, nope. Proper big headphones... of course they don't work for running, but they all make my ear super hot and super gross, so no friggin way... specially because they give me some very painful pimples. I also tried some more generic neckband models, it's never the right tension... either too lose, or too hard, which hurts the ears. I also tried the bone conduction models.... too muffled, can't hear anything over the ambient noise while running. So, I'm on my 4th purchase of Sony NWZs... the exact same one Dave is destroying there. xD I have to note too... none of them so far has degraded to the point of not holding a charge. Perhaps the very first one I bought which I gave away is no longer working, but all others are still with me and plenty ok. Then again, I don't really use them all the time. And I must have taken it for a swim only half a dozen times or so... mostly use them on running sessions. I do sweat a lot though... xD So at the very least mine have survived a couple of years being drenched in sweat couple times a week. Oh yeah, explaining... this thing has an internal mp3 player with some 16Gb storage... not much, but enough. You either use it like that or as a bluetooth headset. Another thing that might explain the excess of electronics... it has a digital ambient audio bypass. It's not super great, but works. You can activate a mode with a button that captures audio with it's microphone and mixes with whatever is playing. Give you some ambient awareness.

@@zetasyanthis From what I can tell, it has shuffle and repeat mode only for internal storage.... on bluetooth mode you need to program it on the device, I think. Not super sure because I don't use alternative modes much. But Sony website has the digital manuals available to check out!

Nice. I did work experience as a 16 year old at AWA Microelectronics. They were doing some IC in a can, something aerospace or military, might have even been for your sonarbouys, I can't recall. But yeah they welded them, put them in a bomb and pressurised them with helium to stupid pressures then evacuated the bomb, waited a bit and then opened a port to a mass spectrometer. If the weld was shit, then the helium would slowly leak out and give a much larger peak at helium than a good one, and of course I'm sure they spent weeks calibrating it all with holes of various sized zapped into the can!

I have designed autoclaves with similar seals and it is the outside pressure (inside with an autoclave) that causes the seal to expand as it is pressed. The more pressure the more the seal is pressed so they work really well until they go hard.

It seems the BLE remote control is the most useful part of this set) I have this one and it was very interesting to use the rc to control another devices. Its possible because rc uses only MAC address filtering after power on and then you can connect to it with or without pairing procedure. I used the rc to control a prototype for one project at my work.

I think when the top side is put into place, it has some ridges that press on the green llastic part, which pushes it to the sides as it's being blocked from the bottom and pressed from the top. When it's pushed to the side, it can then create a nice seal.

I think that the green seal works with the top cover to prevent water penetration, as intermedium between the two. So for the white secondary cover to work, the first top cover would perhaps push it down to get the desired result. Or maybe its a glue thats added afterwards during the assembly process.

That's neat about the helium test, they do that for telecom cables too. They are filled with air at a low pressure to keep water out. If there is a leak they pump helum and go for a drive with a special probe to try to find the leak. Helium makes a different sound when it leaks out.

Water doesn't pass thru because there is air inside and gaps and pressure are too small to penetrate. It is made to swim, not to dive. I have lost count of how many of these Sony Waterproof MP3's I have had. The control ring is a later expensive gimmick that serves no real use, so stick to the cheaper non bluetooth ones. I swim 4 or 5 times a week in these listening to prog rock - to block out any screaming kids in the other half of the pool. The shortest life one died after 3 months and the newest and longest lived survived 24 months before finally giving up this week. Mostly they get a few months past the 12 month warranty before packing in. If I can get 250 swims out of a pair then, at half an Aussie $ per swim, I am happy. So I have just ordered yet another replacement pair....
