Howdy there folks! The plan was originally set in place to stream the second part of this the following day and to do so, would require basically no sleep on my end to get the video coverage ready but also some trouble for the guests. We did it though! Everyone was awake and ready, the video was rendered and uploaded, all was well... until I was informed by KZbin that the video simply wouldn't process. Unfortunate since choosing to reupload would still take 2 hours and that would mean Metal wouldnt be able to talk about later portions of the game, so we opted to find the next best time for everyone and that means Wednesday! Hopefully this is a blessing in disguise as we can think on the story a lil more and get super well rested o/ The Saturday to come will indeed cover Ragnarok criticism... I am compiling things and my god... you guys... I have such sights to show thee. See you there...

A minor thought I had. I noticed that throughout the game, Kratos is very stern in how he speaks to Svanna and Speki. Freya even makes comments about how Kratos treats them and about how she doesn't approve of his coldness towards them. The girls are constantly whining, so Kratos and Freya kill the raiders they thought the wolves were afraid of only to realise that they were actually afraid of Kratos. Anyway. I always wondered why Kratos spoke to the wolves as if he hated them, and then it clicked. At one point Kratos told Freya of spartan training. He told her that their elders beat them until they couldn't stand and at night, were left to return home alone... or be food for the wolves. Is this, like, a mini arc for Kratos, or am I just putting odd pieces together?

1:38:40 In Ragnarok, Mimir is actually Celtic. Or at least, he seems to be. He describes himself as having served a king in a distant land before coming to Midgard and eventually meeting Odin and falling into his service. And the Norns refer to Mimir as "Puck" - most well known from A Midsummer Night's Dream - which would mean that the king he references is Oberon, King of the Fae and husband to Queen Titania, both also from the play. Puck, Oberon, and Titania all come from Celtic mythology.

I think going to the Celt Lands would be a good place to go next or after Egypt. I think a good arc to go on for those pantheons is having the Romans (remnants of the Greek with Athena/Terra as its leader) invading those lands and Kratos and Atreus have to defend against them. It can also allow Kratos and Atreus to be directly confronted with the past that Kratos has moved beyond but hasn't forgotten him.

Somehting I also only just realized. The entire Form vs Nature discussion plays VERY well into the concern Kratos and Mimir have about him repeating his past. Because the form of it does seem to be the same, he's back to fighting gods, attacking pantheons and so on. But its the nature. Before it was revenge. Now it's to save someone who CAN be saved. Later after Brok dies he first thinks it's back to revenge but Kratos realizes it's more, it's truly about justice and preventing more harm being caused, as opposed to his attack on Olympus which was purely for himself and he didn't care how much collaterol there was. Edit: I don't think the guys mentioned this but if they did, whoops.

I think one of my favourite little details regarding this game is during the first scene with Odin. When he’s talking to and about Kratos he doesn’t react. He asks questions and looks at Odin Judgementally as he’s making his attempts to command respect from the god of war but Kratos doesn’t raise a single hand or moves a muscle… until his son is brought up. Every time Odin points at, talks about or to or even that hand on the shoulder. Every move towards Atreus is met with Kratos slowly placing a hand on his axe as if to say non verbally “I don’t want to fight or kill another god… but if you go near or hurt my boy I will not be responsible for what happens next.” It’s just a really good detail that adds more to how far he’s willing to go to ensure his son’s safety. Man loves his boy.

Great detail. Personal favourite of mine is the Norns calling Kratos 'Cruel Striker' as one of his names, because that's actually one of the translations of Farbauti (Loki's father). It just shows that they cared about respecting the mythology, even when they change things.

7:40:00 This interaction also proves that Heimdall isn’t nearly as smart as he thinks he is. Sure he can see your intentions, but he also takes those intentions at face value and acts on the knowledge he gleans immediately without examining it deeper, using it as a cheap tool to lord over others. Odin looks deeper. He knows what Atreus’ intentions are, and he knows how to twist those intentions to suit his goals, and that simple application of strategy over brute force absolutely baffles Heimdall. He doesn’t get the memo that Odin is using him, he doesn’t catch on and play along, despite the audience picking it up immediately.

My question becomes how is this fake out death different from batman arkham asylum's fake out? Also can we just appreciate not only that Brok gave the blessing and that Kratos asked, but that Brok didn't swear, didn't crack a joke, and didn't make an innuendo. He took it 100% seriously and gave the kind of blessing anyone would be more than proud to have on their weapon

I really appreciated the "and may it be put down when it's job is done." Line. It's innocuous, but means so much on Kratos's weapon. It show Brok genuinely believes that Kratos has changed, that he can stop when it's done this time. Most people would see Kratos, his past, and what he's doing and get swept away in the blood and honor and glory of it all. But Brok is not an idiot. He can see the whole picture and knows how much Kratos wants to change, and says the line with as much belief as the others.

I really appreciate the character design of both Thor and Odin. Thor is pretty accurate to the mythology, where he's described as being huge and having an enormous appetite with red hair. And yes, he's a drunk. Only difference is, he's smarter here than in the myth. Odin though, personality wise actually isn't too far off. He was even a bit of backstabber in the myth. The only thing is, he usually walks the world as a tall man who dresses exactly as he does in this game.

Odin is surprising accurate in a sense, he's described by Jackson Crawford (in his translation of the Poetic Edda) as a selfish and anxious figure that's in the pursuit of knowledge and wisdom to postpone or avoid his fate at Ragnarok. He manipulates humans in Midgard to fight so they can be transported to Valhalla by the Valkyries after death and be used as his army for the coming battle. He is even named as "Killer". In Ragnarok he has such a disarming demeanor and is so unassuming, as you can see from his place in Asgard it's not some gaudy palace and it's all for the purpose of being seen as a modest figure. Very complicated, cunning, scheming and manipulative. Lies over lies and sometimes it's the truth but represented with a false intention. Makes the typical benevolent portrayal of Odin like in Marvel's Thor movies look like a joke.

At the part you guys are at where Kratos is checking the training area. Later in the game he references a Spartans' lifestyle of constantly training, fighting, surviving and very often dying, he never mentions how they would mourn or grieve. Because dying in battle was an honor and looked on fondly for men. That when he finally has a break from the raging tide of war and losing everything that he himself has lost all meaning of his life and just drifts. Now Kratos can only train his son as it was the duty of men to prepare them for fighting but anything else it seems was left to the mother. So helping others emotionally, for a warrior, was training to never lose anything else. That last sentence was the main reason for this comment but I wound up typing more than expected between the first two and the last one.

2:07:48 Did Mauler just forget about the Gravedigger? The way he says that Kratos just 'climbs right out' of Hades implies that Kratos did it himself. Without the Gravedigger, implied to be Zeus in disguise, Kratos was done.

Thor in this game has the body of a power lifter. His stomach and chest are not saggy and lack any jiggle. Real lifters don't look like the roided out, super cut, body builders you see at competitions... They look like this Thor. Now they CAN look like the leaner athletes like Zeus in the older games, but I feel like the differences is with Greek athleticism and Norse... The Greek were athletes, they invented the Olympics... Wrestling, running, throwing... Full body workouts on the regular. The Norse had to survive in much harsher weather and environment. Harsh winters, less food, more hardiness required, less free time to do sports. The Norse people needed strength to survive and for combat. Thor is built to embody that hardiness. Its function over form.

On the argument of the death screen in the Thor fight: it is meant to make the player/audience understand the moment narratively, but in a way we can instantly recognize. Kratos "dies," and he sees something else, maybe nothing at all. We see a death screen and instantly know "we" or Kratos died, at the same moment he experiences it. And likewise we hear the voice and realize the reality, coming back to life and in the game right when Kratos does. It being scripted helps since it makes the player realize what's happening at the exact moment Kratos does, by using the established screen mechanic. A comparable moment is in GoW 2018, when Kratos uses his regeneration and we see his health bar refill even when he's walking home after the battle with Baldur. He doesn't see a health bar, but we can instantly recognize what's happening thanks to that while we also know Kratos is healing. This is that, just the opposite.
@witchking2063
@witchking2063 Жыл бұрын
I would say that is still a bit different because the health bar is used as another player interaction mechanic that you use not long from then when the UI comes back, where as this is still supposed to hold you in the cinematic but with that tips section on the screen in the middle.

I'm pretty sure Kratos died in the very first game, even Gaia the narrator says it when it happens. Also, he would have stayed dead too and wouldn't have been able to just climb out if it wasn't for that old mysterious gravedigger who dug a hole for him to climb out of and even sent down a chain so he have something to climb on. In the second game, I'm not entirely sure what happens but I took it that he actually died there too. Then Gaia says "only a coward accepts death", so it's like Kratos died but thanks to Gaia's words he wouldn't accept that. Then Gaia healed his wound with some last remaining Titan magic, I presume, and then also inspiried Kratos with her words so he kept going. With these things in mind, the "death can have me when it earns me" line in Ragnarök feels even better to me because he already died a few times but he just wouldn't have it. He still felt like he have stuff to do so death can wait.

The scene is very grounded from my view, fictional situation besides. I had no issue with how it they presented this scene, if anything it just brought back worse memories. 7:54 - Knowing Odin from lore, this is a perfectly fine Odin, better than most really. Odin was venerated mostly by the upper class (the "allfather" thing is Christianization of the original mythos, he was never such a thing, but an attempt to draw parallels by missionaries to make it easier to convert) so he represented shrewdness, lore etc. Thor is an odd one, he was a folk hero (in the sense of being the God the peasants worshipped, not that he was all loving and kind) that he is depicted how he is isn't as bad as I'd think it could have been, behaves like a like a lot of countryside men and being 'rotund' would make sense for a peasants deity which was linked with fertility at some point. Think its fine tbh Also Loki, was the personification of a 'force', "god" of mischief, the fool, the chaotic forces of nature/universe that throw the wrench into the carefully laid out plans of others, generating change (and many times improvements) but only after initial strife. He is "change", people resist it, but its inevitable, creates new problems that only he can solve, while solving older problems and improving peoples lives, although at a cost that sometimes can be quite steep (a lot of death etc). Thus he was 'feared' not because he was 'evil' at all, but because he represented the churn, change, chaos, and that brings a healthy dose of respect. A flood might wipe out a city and yet bring needed change. But its all a mess, each variant, subculture, areas, peoples would have their own stories so hey, take it with a pinch, even after spending quite a long time reading into it (and not wikipedia) and talking with archeologists (friends of family) its all a bit messy. But Marvel ones are far, far more inaccurate than these ones so hey.

Errr, you’re incorrect on somethings. Such as the origin of “all father”. The word is Alföðr and it has another word tied to it in Valfǫðr. Neither are Christian rooted, and the “father” part of the word isn’t clear as the actual word for father was slightly different. Even so the modern linguistic understanding is “all Father” and “valfather” which the first is obvious and the latter is “fall Father” or “father of the slain”, though again, the father part is disputed and the word may actually be along the line of “to order” As for the interpretation of Odin…eh. What you’re saying doesn’t really align with the proto germanic or indo European roots as we currently understand them.

Having a beer belly and being big as fuck is just perfect. And it makes him just SO much more menacing for how he's characterized. And when it comes to Kratos having different speech patterns, being much more direct with each complete word, makes sense because he's not even from this place. had a funny idea to that, like say there were some survivors of the Greek pantheon and they moved on to a small village that will become Rome. Aphrodite, Apollo & Artemis, Dionysus and Demeter & Hestia. Aphrodite could be mourning over Hephestus and Pandora, sort of a 'you don't know how good you had it til its gone' sort of feeling. A little sidequest would have Kratos and Atreus bring her items that once belonged to them, Pandora's bracelet and Hephestus's cane. They urge her to live and be better for their memories as she thanks them and reforms herself as Venus, Roman goddess of love.

Thinking about it right now, Freya is such a damn good character, and it’s like why do people like this strong female character? Because being, “strong,” and being, “female,” didn’t make who her character is, being strong is what she was forced to be by circumstances, being female is what she is, not who she is. Hollywood studios in particular, but all forms of media are so busy trying to make characters who they want you to like so damn bad, but also make these damn near perfect beings who are already so strong and already the strongest, but kind, loving, infallible, and pure, or they’re the character of destiny and they’re prophesized to be the bestest ever and the key to everything so that way whole plot is literally forced to revolve around them and then these forms of media tend to forgot to actually make the character likable and relatable and unfortunately these characters are mainly female. Very rarely do you just like a character right off the bat, it typically takes that characters story, struggles, tribulations, tests, and growth so when the time in the climax comes for them to be strongest, you find yourself actually rooting for them at the time where they can finally show their true powers, or you wind up realizing how much you love the character after everything occurs, but modern media just wants you to like their character from the start, so they give all the qualities, morals, and powers of an end of story hero to their hero right at the beginning of the story, and it’s not even done in a funny way like OPM. Like I said before, when studios get too caught up in trying to make you like a character they actually forget to make a character likable.

Because if you wanna call the writers out for making her a Mary Sue, get to digging that grave up and go scream at some bones because THEY made her a Queen and a Valkyrie, Jesus Christ. ALSO do you NOT FUCKING SEE KRATOS DOESN’T WANNA KILL HER?!?! He stops Atreus from killing her or mauling her in bear form? He literally doesn’t want to hurt or even worse kill the fucking woman who saved his sons life in the first game. And when she finally breaks the roots and faces Kratos, he drops his axe to grab the bottom of the hilt where he would then be ready to fight and kill her because he has to protect his son over everything, and if he’s dead, he can’t do that. And she brags about it because she’s also a warrior, idrc for the MCU anymore, but it’s similar to when Thor and The Hulk fought each other and each kept saying they won the fight, she’s saying she would’ve won that fight, Kratos just got her back as a friend, so he’s not gonna be like, “Oh yea? Fucking come at me bro, I’ll fucking kill you,” like come tf on 😆😂 just fucking shit all over those points.

I'd like to point out that breaking fate as one comment tried to argue, is not what GoW is about; people tend to forget this a lot, the Fates made a prophecy about the downfall of olympus. It's literally the main prophecy we the Player should be most familiar with as Ares tried fulfilling it in GoW1 while Zeus who received the prophecy made the other gods aware and sent Kratos to hunt him. In ascension and the other side story games like ghost of Sparta we are given the bits of pieces as to why Kratos has his doubts about the gods, which then brings him at odds with them including his growing disdain against gods like Ares, in a sense showing us that Kratos is fulfilling that Prophecy given to Zeus without Zeus realising that he actually is the one in the prophecy, you could even notice that Zeus in the side story games is much more pragmatic and concerned about Kratos' safety or that he cares about him somewhat. Now in GoW1 Kratos replaces Ares as the god of war but thematically he also replaces him as the true usurper the one to bring the ruin of Olympus. Then in GoW2 Kratos is cemented as the destroyer when Zeus, whose personality has completely changed as noted by the others gods later down the line as they have told us, as he is finally corrupted fully by the Fear that was once trapped inside the box that Kratos unleashed, and due to this, his paranoia has reached it's peak and clouded him, basically seeing Kratos as his greatest threat, whether the fear that corrupted him felt that Kratos still has Hope inside him, or Zeus being completely paranoid due to the corruption, it doesn't matter he's already made up his mind, he will kill Kratos. Now Kratos is the only one capable of freeing them from the corruption because the power of Hope he absorbed still lays dormant inside him. Going back fullcircle that the task that he was originally given in GoW now will be fulfilled this time instead of the god of war it shall be the King of the Gods and Fear itself that latched onto Zeus. Plus in GoW3 Pandora literally could not escape her fate, in fact she rushed into it even if it meant dying, but still she fulfilled her role. So No Kratos did not break fate in the Og GoW, in fact one of the criticisms in terms of writing and mechanics in GoW2 was that some players noted that the sisters of fate in terms of their control over time and space or fate, is shallow and surface level, they have this great power yet could not beat Kratos, at that point it isn't about Hubris anymore it's just that they're dumb or they don't really have full control over what happens. So here is the summary, Zeus learns about the prophecy of him beating his father, fufills that prophecy and now has full belief in the prophecy given by the sisters, the sisters then give Zeus the prophecy of his downfall and of Olympus, then down the road Ares and Gaia learns about this, Then the incident with Kratos happens, after that Ascension happens, then I believe Atlas chains or the game with Persephone is the main villain is what occurs; after that GoW 1 occurs, after the first game Ghost of Sparts is next where he kills Thanatos and suffers at the knowledge of Deimos' death and finally is ready to take the role of GoW, due to Kratos unleashing the box's contents Fear latches onto Zeus, and it is at this time Zeus's mind begins to deteriorate and grows increasingly paranoid and cruel. Then GoW2 starts, and then GoW3.

There were people in chat claiming the prophecy spelt “Tyr” in elder futhark runes. They are wrong. I made the same mistake at first glance. The runes in question are next to a man wielding a hammer. There’s a single rune to denote the “th” sound, and the other two are in fact for “or”. The runs name Thor, they do not name Tyr.

This EFAP marks my first exposure to Ragnarok, but my take on the fake death and Thor zapping Kratos back to life is that typically a player knows that their character isn’t going to die in the opening hours of the game, so implementing the loading screen like you achieved a game over is a way to make players actually think for a moment that they died and immediately realize this was intended when Thor starts speaking saying he isn’t done with Kratos and we’re just thrown right back into the game. I’m overall positive towards this as I felt like it was the devs briefly messing with my sensibilities as a gamer.

Thor is built like a tank, he dwarfs Kratos in stature and is extremely skilled in the way that he fights. To say that he's past his glory days is a ridiculous notion considering how imposing he is on top of the fact of how he's able to carry himself. I actually only bought up the Eddie Hall comparison because the only people saying that Thor and WSM Eddie are in no way similar in build are Synthetic Man fans, because everyone else can see more than a passing similarity in their builds courtesy of not being disingenuous. Thor kills Kratos. That's what's great about that part. It shows how strong Thor is. I personally thought Thor couldn't stand up to Kratos, but they did a great job at making him feel like a true threat. He could have had an unavoidable AOE to kill you, and maybe then you'd have a subplot to find an ability to counter the AOE attack next time you fight him, though.

Baldur was not as overtly strong, but his power was that he could do this all day. Thor is that guy who packs a massive punch, and you don't know it until he hits you...and at that point, you're on your ass wondering what day it is and why you can hear colors. This is how fights often work, so it's perfectly reasonable.

And even if you never have pet, wouldn't you sympathized with character and his emotional state? Did people had a problem with the fact that we didn't knew Faye, during her funeral scene in 2018, didn't they sympathized with Atreus back then? I don't think that you have to lost your mother to empathize with kid who lost his parent...same here. I didn't finish watching this game but I'm happy that authors didn't screwed the story adn that something good came out in this wretched year! As for the argument that "Ragnarok" is not a game...I don't get it. I didn't play it but it's not like one of those Telltale games or Dark Pictures Anthology - still remember "wonderful" time EFAP crew had while going trough "Little hope" and "House of the Ashes" - , it's not walking simulator either... Maybe it will be controversial opinion but SOMA is less of the game than "Ragnarok"... There is a lot of gameplay here; fighting, puzzle solving, exploration, looting, there are skill trees, boss fights, choices regarding weaponry and playstyle... How is this not a game? Why something like the first "The last of us" was almost universally loved and this isn't? I understand if some people consider this boring, but other than that...how is this not a game? As Fringy's hatred of summer - I will be happy to switch places with you; come here to Eastern Europe and I will be more than happy to replace you in Australia. 😂I prefer spring over summer but anything is better than late fall and winter in my part of the world...
