Another cool detail hinting at the big reveal is Odin's tattoos. In his very first appearance we see that when the ravens are "with" him, his tattoos are fully darkened, but when the ravens are out, his tattoos are nearly invisible. The whole time Atreus is interacting with Odin in Asgard, there is only ever 1 tattoo filled in at most. It's crazy how many hints there are that you aren't able to fully put together until after the reveal and the damage is already done.

God of war may hold his hand, Valkyrie Queen may pass the judgement to others, your family and everyone else you betrayed may not be able to reach you, but one angry fuckin' dwarf with a hammer may be enough to bring you to the end. It wasn't any of Odin's big choices that sealed his fate - not the mask, not mistreatment of Thor, not war against Kratos, not divorce and lies to his wife, nah, it was stabbinga dude that wouldn't shut the fuck up and was for what Odin knew - very much replaceable. Everything changed when Asgard attacked. I will say this one thing. (6:06:09) I love how during the final encounter, Atreus is holding the mask, he’s merely a few feet away from the very thing he’s been wanting this whole time, and only Odin, in his royal blue, stands in his way. He is on Atreus’ right, tempting him to approach the tear, bathing him in a golden light, yet he’s like a devil on his shoulder. And Kratos approaches Atreus on his left, in his blood red, with a red light behind him, yet he’s speaking to him like his angel, trusting Atreus to make his choice. Insane contrast.

The devs always meant for Atreus to be half giant they pitched him being Loki as “the giants kept getting my naming wrong”, so they looked up Loki’s father which is Farbauti. When translated means Cruel Striker or Deadly Hitter. Not only does it fit Kratos like a glove also makes a little story because in lore he was a Storm Giant(possibly alluding to Zeus and the Titans), and Laufey’s name means kindling or dry grass. A bit over a year late to the party, but wanted to add a couple things. Firstly for Mimir, when Kratos and Atreus head to Helheim, to tame a savage doggie, Mimir asks to be left behind, as he'd had enough of the realm already. However, towards the end of the game, when asked to help the Boar negotiate for Helheim's assistance, Mimir joins with no objection, so far as implying he'd take over Hel for the Bird. Dude's a legend, and deserves that dance. Secondly, if you return to where the Norns were found after Atreus rejoins Kratos, Mimir asks suspiciously what Kratos intended to do with the Norns. Embarrassment in his voice, Kratos responds: "I.. thought Atreus would like the horse." Most wholesome moment in the game. Small moments in a game full of great ones, but man that's some good stuff. In the myth, Odin and his two brothers basically kill Ymir and use his body to create the earth. The 9 realms basically exist in Ymir's skull. The clouds are chunks of his brain. The stars what's left of his thoughts and dreams. Each realm is a disc with Ymir's eyelashes wrapped around as a wall to contain them and to keep them from touching each other. The World Tree is his brain stem. And all water and life flows and grows from his blood. And it's the blood that nearly drowned all the giants. The murder of Ymir is the source of the conflict between the Aeser and the giants. So yeah, Odin wasn't a great guy even in the myth, but he made great use out of his father's corpse.

I left this comment on the unlisted version, but decided to add it here, too: I don’t know if MauLer will read this, but to continue off from the whole “Tyr’s prison” question near the end: turns out, the prison IS a chunk of Asgard. Says so on the GoW wiki. I initially thought that, but when MauLer questioned if it was true, I did a quick skim through a random vid of the discovering Tyr segment and THOUGHT I read the character’s subtitles as referencing a separate Asgard chunk, NOT the prison. That’s what I get for doing half-***ed research, lol. I understand why MauLer didn’t believe the prison was from Asgard, and I agree: how the F*** did anyone survive within it!?
@TheKpa112 жыл бұрын
So do you think they did that because they felt that the real Tyr deserved to have his freedom? Cause from a story perspective; I think it would be more impactful if the original Tyr had be scattered to oblivion
@KingDilly2 жыл бұрын
@@TheKpa11 Having Tyr alive does help bring a needed limitation on Odin’s power to impersonate (the fact that the one being impersonated needs to be alive and in that specific prison), so the idea of Tyr being alive this whole time isn’t that bad to me. I just have a hard time believing that anyone could survive in chunks of Asgard crashing into other realms like meteors. Now, maybe the chunks didn’t crash and simply “popped” into existence within each realm; but I haven’t any evidence of that, so I assume they crashed. Perhaps, instead of what we got, Kratos and the crew found the prison with everyone dead, and find Tyr’s body inside. This would add some more tragedy to the whole destruction of Asgard; the characters chose to bring about Ragnarok, result in Odin’s death, but also unknowingly Tyr’s. Personally, I prefer the idea MauLer and the rest had: the prison was always there, the squid gave them the seed that would unlock travel to there, and the debris of Asgard opened a path towards it.

The portion of this stream where they highlight all of the scene with Óðinn disguised as Týr drew my attention to something that makes me appreciate their interpretation of the character. In many of the fornaldarsögur (stories from ancient times)-which have a great deal of mythological material-and the stories in Snorra Edda and the Poetic Edda, Óðinn will disguise himself in order to create disputes between people, because he’s literally trying to harvest heroes for the fight at Ragnarök (i.e. einherjar, “army of one”, einheri in the singular). I think it’s in Saxo Grammaticus’ Gesta Danorum (History of the Danes) in the story of Haraldr Wartooth it is stated that Óðinn gives him an immunity to iron and steel weapons-and fire, I think-to ensure that he becomes a long-lived glorious warrior-king. In a battle between Haraldr and Sigurðr Ring (the father of legendary Ragnarr loðbrók), Óðinn rides along with Haraldr on a chariot disguised as an old man and beats him to death with a wooden club to claim him. In the Poetic Edda, in a poem called Lokasenna (“Loki’s Truth-Speaking”), Loki actually roasts Óðinn for-among other things-selfishly raising up his favorite warriors just to make them potent warriors for Ragnarök. This has led to some theories as to why there are so few place names bearing Óðinn’s name compared to Þórr and Freyr/Freyja by a significant margin. This is related to the perspective that Óðinn was a god for the ruling class (those who participate in battles and would have an interest in an afterlife that rewards such acts), and Þórr is a more popular god for everyday people; a protector of Miðgarðr and a son the personification of earth herself, Jörð (a jötunn literally called “Earth”).

Ragnarock itself was so disappointing. You’re in a empty room talking in front of Allies instead of an army you’re supposed to be leading. Seriously do the armies even know kratos is leading? This would be the part where kratos needs to win the hearts of the armies he’s about to lead. Instead there’s no connection to the armies and they’re gathered off screen by side characters. I swear they talked about how desperate they were but no one thought to bring Fenrir, skull, hati, and the world serpent. They all arrived on their own, no one thought to ask these powerful beings for assistance. Side not fenrir has portal abilities but no one thinks to use that, would’ve been cool if that’s how they got to Asgard because that’s just something Odin couldn’t predict. Why Odin didn’t just destroy the realm towers as soon as gahllahorn was lost I don’t know.
@bipstymcbipste5641 Жыл бұрын
Definitely the biggest issue I take with this game is Ragnarok itself cause I feel like they blew their load in the first 60-70 percent of the game and now it's just rushing to finish and doesn't have the resources to depict something as grand as Ragnarok is supposed to be. Barely any named characters on the good guy side die in the actual war. Actually, who even dies except for freyr? Battle of hogwarts had more impact than this
@geminia9992 жыл бұрын
I can't help but feel the ending, while it hits the character beats, I feel like it somewhat fails the plot beat of this being an apocalypse for an entire realm. One, the war itself feels kind of lame, you fight in some gritty trenches, and it certainly doesn't come across as this huge calamity at least in the moment to me. Then I feel like the whole "but Odin is making these people fight" should have been considered more before than in the moment of after you injure/kill a bunch of them. And then you just go fight thor and Odin and it feels like none of this whole backdrop was really necessary because you basically do the important part all by yourself. I guess it just doesn't real feel like this huge thing that is either grand in scope or properly showcases the terrors of war. Also watching this, I'm kind of surprised there is not really a moment that is presented as the moment where Kratos could die? Like this is the major character moment for Kratos that the game has been building, about accepting his death, and then nothing really even properly threatens more than any other thing he did in the game. It's so forgotten you kind of even forget that it was a part of what they were supposed to be expecting to happen. This in turn also weakens how Ragnarok comes off, as there is nothing that actually even seems to come close to truly threatening Kratos, which just makes Ragnarok feel less impactful and cataclysmic an event. And lastly, while this may be from me not really remembering much of 2018, I feel like the game could have done more to properly show Odin actually doing more awful things. Because as it stands with the events he does during the time space of this game, he appears with Thor and says Thor can fight Kratos for revenge, he continues to imprison Tyr and impersonates him, he appears to kratos once to goad him, kills Brok, Kills Thor and attacks you at the end of the game. While those actions could certainly justify his death, I don't feel they really cement Ragnarok being specifically the thing that has to be done, and that the consequences of this war are deserved for it. He's certainly does alot more evil actions before the game, but I find it a bit harder to truly convince that destroying an entire realm is the only path. Also, find it odd that killing Baldur cause fimblewinter, but killing Heimdall, Thor dying, and Odin don't do anything besides make the realms better? Seems odd to ultimately say that killing these gods doesn't have a consequence and is basically all positive for those who have no care for Asgard, which is populated by Aesir, valkyries and people who made it to valhalla.

That's how I felt about the Titan-Olympian war in God of War 3. On paper we're told that's a war, but the fighting happens off screen, and what little we do see of the war has the Olympians overwhelmingly defeat the Titans. From the perspective of Kratos -- and thus the player -- you're not fighting a war, you're doing a platformer, hack n slash adventure like you did in the last two games. A real war would be thousands of enemies fighting Kratos on an open battlefield, and they're swarming Kratos at every turn. A real war would have been hundreds of gods fighting hundreds of Titans at the same time, or fighting Kratos at the same time. For obvious programing reasons they didn't bother to handle it that way, since it would be hard to animate that kind of spectacle.

@fadedmogli51792 жыл бұрын
I disagree with the take that it doesn't feel like a real war. There is shit tons goin on in the background if your looking at it. The reality is that there is simply no way a war like this would be long at all. The factors at play are that the attacking side is an all out offensive that has no intention of a retreat. They also have no camps in asgard so this war is going to be fought until one side loses with no reprieve. The outside fighting is a scramble so there is essentially just a scatter of Odins forces along the outside of the wall. Kratos being kratos will make it to the war machines rather quickly and simply because there is no chain of command in odins army, he's relying on overwhelming numbers. They can't relay his position and concentrate forces on him. From that point forward, he only has to stop the war machines and breach asgards walls, since his forces are concentrated outside the wall, the only forces to intercept Kratos are the einherjar that are respawing. Odin didn't know about the flaw so the only thing that could breach asgard was Ragnorok as far as he knew. He had no reason to put forces inside. We were given all the info on why this was going to be a quick moving scramble of a war and not some drawn out affair. The realms simply didn't have the foothold or means to do anything more than an all out singular offensive.

"I'm a trained writer, and this thing that everyone is praising specifically for its writing is bad." Well, I'm convinced. To be clear, maybe everyone is stupid. That seems to be the case with certain movies that have people claiming are genius by saying it's stupid on purpose. But, you're going to have to do more to convince me than saying "Trust me. I'm a trained writer." There's lots of "trained writers" completely fucking up the MCU right now.

Also "trained writer" is subjective beyond belief. Trained by who? Trained in what? A boxer and a sniper are both trained fighters, but who's going to win in a fight?

Here's how you know when someone is providing great characters in a great story... it's when EFAP can let it run for minutes at time, not having to pause for blatant stupidity, and just bask in the glory.

Or because they have no idea how to explain away the horrible logic of the character's decisions. There is literally no reason for Odin to have let Kratos live after Thor kills him. It would have been way too easy for Odin to manipulate Atreus. Not even Mauler could explain the reasoning. Edit, I very much enjoyed the game and story. On my third playthrough
@Cheesytarian Жыл бұрын
@isheetfromaswhole3657 Odin didn't know that had happened. He was talking to Atreus at home. Thor wanted a good fight, that's all.

@@happypuppy-i4kI mean, if the Aesir kill Kratos, no way in hell would Atreus ever entertain the idea of working with them
