@romainf3780 The Don should have appeared in the Marvels be the figure to uplift Carol, Monica and Kamala. In fact, you learn he's gained powers and has been using his abilities to help the galaxy as well but is more low-key about it. The lesson being that he is imparting is doing the right thing should be done without any kind of recognition but because it is the right thing. And we learn that he doesn't hold a grudge against Carol because that isn't what a hero does.

I made mention on this on a separate channel but I recently connected with a longtime friend(we live in separate states) and the topic of Marvel came about. He asked me if I saw the Marvels. I said no and I briefly went over my dislike of the current MCU and phases four and five. He agreed with my sentiment. Keep in mind, the guy is a normie, busy working hard and raising a family(I know this because I've known him for years and went to his wedding) and he admitted that in spite of liking Loki, he's been checked out of Marvel. This is purely anecdotal but I get the sense that's what's happening right now. Normies are walking away. The fans are walking away. Back in the Infinity Saga there was a FOMO element. Each movie made you want to see the next installment. And while the writing quality of those movies we can discuss, in general Infinity War and Endgame the MCU was redhot. And the franchise dropped the ball. No wait, the evicerated the ball. It's gotten to the point where normies are walking away. This movie already had a huge hurdle with Brie Larson and Carol Danvers(in piste of the first movie's financial success due to being BEFORE Endgame) but man, if the box office is anything it's indicative of how far Marvel has fallen. And quite honestly, they have only themselves to blame. I don't like bashing Marvel or anything. But I'm not going to accept mediocrity. I want quality content. And outside Iman Velani(Feel awful for her. She's doing the best she can with what she's given) being ok performance wise, this movie is so pathetic and disposal, nobody will be talking about it. All in all, the fall of the MCU is here. It sucks but this is the byproduct of hubris and bad writing.

If this movie really is the lowest opening box office movie for the MCU, then I now completely believe the rumors of tickets being bought out for the original Captain Marvel with nobody showing up. It makes sense in hindsight why the "billion dollar" Captain Marvel was quickly tossed aside in phase 4 with only cameos despite the reported "success" of the movie. Disney knew no one cared, spent money to make it look like people really cared, and got nothing in return except for this money sinkhole.
@johnparker8648
@johnparker8648 Жыл бұрын
The rumored mass purchase of tickets could also have been allocated as marketing budget, in so far as a large opening box office combined with bought and paid for access journalism and critics would lead to normies that wait a week before going to the new movie going in greater numbers. They would also recoup a portion of the ticket sales as revenue especially during the first week when their portion of the box office is the highest. There is also the possibility of a tax write off from a stunt like that as well.

2:45:28 I remember the night the Game of Thrones finale aired the final episode of a cartoon series called Star Vs. the Forces of Evil also aired. In that episode the main character, Star, decides to defeat the Enemy by destroying all magic in the universe. This would kill countless sentient magic beings, but one of her friends, who was a magic being, said she was alright with it, and Star used that as a license to basically commit genocide. Let me make it clear. This wasn't a hard decision for her friend. With a slight smile on her face, she said she didn't mind dying and that it was a good idea. There was essentially no conflict at all. As awful as what Daenerys did was, at least the show had the bare minimum of common sense to treat genocide like a bad thing. Incidentally, I'm crippled and my name is Brandon, so while I was watching the last episode of Game of Thrones with my best friend, she immediately started chanting hail King Bran the broken when all the characters did and continue to call me that for a while after watching the episode. I honestly would have been more upset if she hadn't taken the opportunity.

@lordkrauser Yeah, it wasn't good. The show was actually somewhat decent for some of seasons 1 and 2, but towards the end of season 2, it got really bad and progressively worse throughout the rest of the series. The show starts off with the main character Star being a spoiled brat and they sort of act like they're going to put her on a character arc to change that but at a certain point they just sort of give up on it. And so for the rest of the show she remains a spoiled brat.

Don't forget that the motivation to delete all magic from the universe comes out of buttfuck nowhere. Star has shown no inclination of hating magic throughout the entirety of the show up until that very point. Hell, out of ALL characters present in that scene where she decides it's time for magic to be destroyed, she is the one who should have the most talking points AGAINST it. And while that decision is awful, I genuinely don't know if I can call it the worst aspect of Season 4 I liked Season 1 and really enjoyed Season 2 despite some weird plot holes and worldbuilding errors sinking in, but then Season 3 was like the show tripping on a rock and Season 4 was the show failing to catch its fall from said trip and breaking all of its hypothetical limbs as it lands
@Brandon_Powell
@Brandon_Powell Жыл бұрын
@verstamech Let's also not forget the fact that it solved nothing. Even though they destroyed magic, she still let Mina go. And Mina was still bigoted towards monsters and expressed that she had no intention of letting go of that. And with Star destroying the barrier between dimensions for the sake of her ungodly connection with Marco, Mina would have a lot more supporters than she did before. Essentially, all she did was get rid of the greatest tool they had to fight people like Mina. But I do agree that that isn't the worst thing about the series. The worst thing for me would be the romance. More specifically, how it's depicted. Star essentially gaslights and manipulates Marco into isolating himself away from his friends and family into complete subservience to her. I think the best summary of their relationship would be when Marco tells Star that he wishes she could shrink him down and carry him around in her pocket and pull him out whenever she wanted. This is a frankly terrifying idea of romance, especially given the kind of person Star is. The show went from being about Star being sent to the human world to give her parents a break from her and hopefully for her to learn some humility to her taking the only thing she truly cared about from the human world, and I refer to Marco as a thing because that's how she treats him, back home and continue to harass her parents. She doesn't learn anything, and she doesn't have to grow and change at all. But that's okay because she hates racism or something.

Fringy's rant about how the MCU handles Aliens reminds me of Star Trek and particulary the Klingons. They only have few bumps on the head (Not even that for the original series) and yet their probably one of the most famous alien species in fiction. Why? Because the writers knew that to make an Alien interesting you give them a culture not a gimmick. In there first appearance you have a great character in Kor. The way he moves, talks and treats people tell you almost everything about the Empire he represents. This one character made the Klingons main stays in the franchise. Then years later you have Star Trek 3 and another fantastic Klingon in Kruge, fleshing the Klingons out even more with there views on battle and honour. The Klingons are different from us but still feel like real people with their own goals and values. Then you have the MCU who think to make an Alien species you just give them a weird gimmick no matter how little sense it makes which just makes them feel like a manufactured plot device
@Avarn388
@Avarn388 Жыл бұрын
@cyberleader6074 Fantasy and Sci-fi has a unique opportunity to explore unique cultures distinct from us. Clever writers can often utilize that as ways to comment on society and culture but not be on the nose about it. For example, something in the old Star Wars EU that always fascinated me was the Kel-Dor(That's Plo-Koon's species). They lived on a planet with low oxygen and helium(hence the face masks) but the cool part was their view on life. They didn't believe in moral gray. The species had a black and white view on things and often attributed moral gray as quote "not being able to distinguish the good from the bad". If Disney Star Wars was competent, imagine bringing in a Kel-dor and introducing that concept with say the First order or Remnant trying to attone and a broader discussion of what is good vs evil? But nope; we just get generic aliens and no opportunity to showcase the wonders of space and aliens.
@georgecisneros5281
@georgecisneros5281 Жыл бұрын
And what makes it even more a travesty is that these aliens aren’t brand new creations by the writers (or, rather, the writers are obviously acting as if they are by undoubtedly outright ignoring the source material. But I digress). So they have no excuse for them to be presented in such a shallow and uninteresting manner, distinctly lacking a logical history. In contrast, as you point out, the Klingons, who were a new, or at least still not fully fleshed out race at the time, were already being written dynamically in those early appearances, with no significant previous source material to pull from. In the end, I’d say this all points to blatant outright negligence on Marvel/Disney’s part. Such a shame. And I do mean they should indeed be ashamed.😒
@Cats-TM
@Cats-TM Жыл бұрын
Not just that, they created their own language for the Klingons. And Star Trek did not have nearly the same amount of budget as Disney. Because they actually cared enough to try and make a species and not just a set piece. Deep Space Nine does a really good job in expanding on the entire universe of Star Trek. Take, for example, the Ferangi! Before DS9 they are, if I remember correctly, just a scheming and greedy people. But DS9 explains how their economy works, their government, how not everyone is greedy and evil, the corruption in the government, a lot of stuff. But also the laws they follow, how they exploit other people, just really everything about them. They also allow it to change and grow over the course of the show, letting it feel like a real place and now, as I said, a set piece. And the Ferangi government is not even an important part of the show, just because they had a species that did not get much use and made one of the main characters that species. Then through him they wrote stuff about the government usually for the filler/non-main plot related episodes. And those episodes were generally good! They did not even need to be there but 1) they were good, and 2) they added a lot to the universe. Also, as you can tell, I really like DS9. Very good show, probably the best Star Treks. Even if most people hated it and thought it was not Star Trek when it was airing.

The TV side of things certainly deserves a lot of blame for the state of the MCU. 100 million dollar budget buys Christopher Nolan period details, cameras shooting in large format, gigantic cast of beloved character actors, an epic 3 hour runtime and great sound mix. A technical masterpiece brought to you by a blockbuster auteur. Movie only needs to make 450 mil+ to make profit even after Hollywood accounting, makes $950 million. Probably sweeps the Oscars. The Secret Invasion, a fucking TELEVISION series on Disney+ that can’t even break a million viewers, cost double the money. Universally lauded as the worst MCU project. Is it really? Who cares. It’s perceived to be bad. Can the occasional good show Loki salvage the stink of shows like these? Who cares. It’s perceived to be unsalvageable. This is peak oversaturation. The bad sticks out, the good gets buried underneath all the bad. Now people go from disliking your stuff to straight up not watching your stuff. Your tv shows start feeling like homework. Your movies don’t feel like events anymore. The perceived shittiness of the tv side combines with perceived shittiness of the movies and eventually you lose all the goodwill among audiences. Oppenheimer was an anomaly tbf, so you can’t hold up superhero stuff to the same standards of quality. You certainly can hold up the budgets side by side though. If you really wanna go the budget route for franchises, maybe consider Barbie as a blueprint. $100 million production. Biggest movie of the year. Feels like an actual event(even the MCU movies don’t feel like events anymore so don’t even get me started on how oversaturated the tv shows feel). Now, let’s talk about the quality of the shows. Scorsese said that these movies weren’t “cinema”. A lot of people disagreed, fair enough. A lot of people agreed, fair enough. But it’s the tv shows that desperately need to be called out. It’s about time someone like Vince Gilligan or Craig Maizin came out and said that these shows aren’t “television”. I mean shit, Disney, you literally got Tony Gilroy in the building go ask him how he made Andor. But for fucks sake make actual television shows built for television with an actual television structure and television storytelling instead of arrogantly pumping out this sludge. Seriously, these Marvel shows are the most disposable, fast food piece of shit trash being put out right now while also damaging the genre and industry as a whole. Who the fuck is this for? A very small number of die hard fans who will watch and praise anything the MCU pumps out? That’s not gonna move the needle. My point: regardless of how the movies turned out, I will always maintain the MCU would be in a far better state right now if they never made these tv shows.

@bikramarora1919 It's Kevin Feige not understanding how to make a TV series. While Jeff Loeb had his issues(Iron Fist, Inhumans), he had folks under him who knew how to make TV. That's why Daredevil was awesome because you got talented folks, like Drew Goodard(who got his start working under Whedon with Buffy) and Steven DeKnight. The latter would produce hits, like Spartacus( a favorite series of mine). I know plenty of folks do not like Gary from Nerdrotic but he's spot on when he says Feige "casts" directors. I guarantee these directors do not have much say on these projects. Nia Decosta left this movie during post-production to work on her own movie. And Ms. Marvel, the main writer for that, left after penning a rough draft and never came back. Feige clearly thought he could approach TV and do it better than Loeb. Not realizing that TV is a different animal than movies. That's why Gunn actually is in a better spot with DC, relatively, because he's got HBO who have folks capable of making good TV series. For goodness sake, Feige and company just kept greenlighting these series WITHOUT pilots. Typically, you shot a pilot, see how it does and shop around before committing to a full season. All in all, the D+ series are just bad movies cut up into episodes. They lack any kind of coherence of a good TV series and intrinsically good writing on its own, outside Andor from what I heard.

@@Avarn388Disney is also so irresponsible with their money that they think it's realistic to have a huge CGI character like She-Hulk in a small TV show behind a paywall. Why not just paint a female bodybuilder green and use creative camera work instead? Or just give her a movie with the Hulk? And they hired the *absolute worst writers* on Disney+. How did they manage to get an entire writers' room of women who can't write a legal drama in a show about a lawyer? Why was no one _fired_ when that became publicly known? This shows that they're juggling too much at once, and problems are slipping through the cracks.

@@Avarn388 Agreed. When a TV show is made, a showrunner and/or writers pitch a show to networks because they have a script or ideas for a show. And once someone is interested, they develop it. It's worth noting that Kamala Khan being a Captain Marvel fangirl is a holdover from the comics that was was not translated into the MCU at all. Basically, in 2012 Marvel rebooted Carol Danvers into a butch version that was supposed to be "the most popular superhero on Earth". She had fans, paparazzi, tabloid gossip, the works. Post-Secret Wars, she led a team called Alpha Flight operating from the space station orbiting the Earth, acting as the first line of defense against any threat coming at the earth from space. But the MCU never brought in the "most popular hero on earth" aspect of her character. They went the opposite direction--after her introduction, she left the planet, and had almost no ties to Earth until this movie. So she has no reason (in-universe) to be popular on Earth. While it made sense for Kamala in the comics to be just another fangirl, it makes no sense in the MCU; for some reason the writers felt they had to keep that aspect to explain the character name and outfit. The 2012 reboot was dumb, and it ticked off everyone because Captain Marvel was being pushed on fans, comic shops, and other stories. She was basically the start of Marvel's version of "the Force is female". Her solo book sold so poorly, it had to be rebooted once a year until they gave up. That made it a bizarre choice to bring her into the MCU, which can only be explained by virtue signaling and politics. So her RL audience popularity there pretty much matches her popularity in the comics.

I would also add the first Ratchet and Clank game. Chairman Drek ruined his own planet, so he was stealing parts of other planets to make a new one just so he could make more money and repeat the process once the new planet was ruined.

What _I_ can't wait for, is to see the apologist crowd defend this one. Captain Marvel 1 was bad, but, it made a lot of money, so disnoids could soyjack point at the box office sales and go "See, haters? You're WRONG. It made MONEY. Stop trolling, you sexists, you're on the wrong side of history!" But this movie doesnt have that. I'm _tempted_ to make a bingo card...

The whole movie should’ve been a mix of an actual Secret Invasion, the destruction of Hala, and the “Star Trek” esqe plot of using Jump Gates as weapons. Dar-Benn as a politically savvy enemy allying her dying planet to the Skrulls, using them to infiltrate Earth’s space station, etc and then betraying them by unleashing the Annihilation Wave (aka Annihilus) by making a 2nd deal which effs over the Skrulls. Turns out reading lots of comics is helpful for imagining more than a space kitty movie.

Ive been saying for years now, they missed the opportunity to make Carol the Captain of the Nova Corps back when they “promoted” her. Captain Marvel would be her moniker, as she was Ms Marvel and now is the Captain of the Nova Corps. The helmet and costume is near identical, and Richard Rider could be her bf/love interest.

Just like Secret Invasion introduced the MCU's version of Perfect Cell, The Marvels film has officially made Carol Danvers into the MCU's Vegeta. If the intense gravitational force and heat of the Sun can't even burn her armor off ( thanks Marvel, for not even giving us a nude and flustered Carol), there is nothing in the MCU that could stop her, save for a Black Hole, and the most that would do is trap her for all eternity.

When Mauler discusses the Avengers' scene, he mentions that the camera spins around them. It came to mind that this is a cinematic convention which adds to tension. What I'm trying to say here is that Marvel not only used to have well written characters, but also a good understanding of filmmaking. Not just CGI, but composition and editing

On the point of the whole switching - I can absolutely see this mechanic being done really great in the hands of someone competent. Like, give this to the people who made "Everything Everywhere All At Once", they'd probably figure it out and make it fun. Make it a permanent consideration All the time, like Mauler said - Carol could be in the middle of saving someone so she doesn't want to randomly get switched with Kamala who can't fly and doesn't have super-strength. It could be a constant thing to be aware of in a fight, where 2 out of 3 are at a disadvantage because one is handling a thing only she can handle, or - as they start doing at the end - once they get the hang of it, they start tag-teaming their enemies and make that a big ol' triumphant moment of team-work and girl power. And also, with the enemy being aware of that mechanic, they could intentionally focus on specific ones in the trio, put enough pressure on them to make them use their powers and switch, so that the enemy could strategically take on the one they want to, and make that one of the things the heroines have to think their way out of later. There's so many things they could have done with this, and it's all wasted on mediocrity, jokes and character vacuums comparable to the hole that the bad guys use to suck out that planet's atmosphere.
