On their point about Penguin's intro scene, it's perfect because we get all 3 sides of Penguin one after the other His ego; how he's seen, his rank, his skillsets, his habitual goals and behaviors His super-ego: where he _wants_ to be, what he respects, what he _thinks_ he is And then, when the guy laughs at him, we get his id: what he _actually_ is deep down, and all the flaws, strengths, and headaches that brings. In _one sequence_ we know everything we need to know about this guy.
@AlphariusandOmegon18 күн бұрын
That is an astute observation and a very interesting way of looking at it. This show gets better the further you dig into it, especially in regards to its character's and dialogue writing.
@KenedyFontroy-Hall18 күн бұрын
To add because I really like that breakdown of Penguin's introduction It also sets the pattern of the show. Penguin gets ambitious, he either gets caught or his plan gets disrupted, he reads the situation, manipulates his way out of it, and due to his ego he gets into another situation usually worse than before and the cycle continues. Penguin is, in my personal experience, the most brutality accurate depiction of modern gangsters. No loyalty, no code, no shame, just self gratification.

Something I don’t want to go under appreciated, the end credit music / main theme, “Scherzo for a Flightless Bird” from Michael Giacchino’s son (Mick Giacchino) is FANTASTIC Like any good score, not only is it an excellent composition alone, but it thematically reflects Oz’s state of being (like how The Batman theme communicated the imposing nature the Batman myth had) and the image of a flightless bird desperately flapping its wings, as the Penguin tends to go through the show Everyone go listen to it when you get a chance
@deewey140518 күн бұрын
100%. The theme is perfect for both Oz and the Penguin as a legacy character. Love how you can almost hear his limp in the song too, and it just gets more and more intense.
@thejemstone921913 күн бұрын
Fantastic analysis! Wholeheartedly agree. I remember when I was first listening to it on its own, it kind of struck me as sounding like it came out of a horror movie, with that droning violin and heavy cello. Which kind of reflects the monster that Oz is. And then the drums kick in and I can't help but think it's one of the best "comic book" themes out there.

I've had a stutter pretty much my entire life, and I gotta give major props to Rhenzy Feliz. He did an excellent job conveying a lot of the little quirks and nuances that come with having that mindset of a stutterer. You can almost see the exact moments when he realizes he's about to stutter and prepares his body language and facial expressions to account for it until he finally gets the word(s) out. @BirdsElopeWithTheSun0917 күн бұрын
@@nhagan001 I didn't, both those breakdowns are bad. Just because they have reasons why they think those movies are bad doesn't mean those reasons are valid. Their references and reasons are terrible. They claim that the characters in Guardians 3 are assassinated because of a bunch of nitpicks that aren't even valid since they didn't understand the characters actions in the film. They even criticize Star-Lord going back for his Zune when that is completely in character. "I hate when characters have multiple conflicting traits and act like people" is a pretty good description of both those breakdowns. They didn't even understand why Wolverine was walking away from Deadpool in the void. They also ask a bunch of existential questions and pretend like they're actual criticisms. "Why is there only one Anchor-being?" - Why do humans breath oxygen? They criticize James Gunn for introducing the med-packs, saying that it's unfair to future writers because now they have to account for this, which is both a baffling criticism and hypocritical since they have never blamed Civil War for introducing the Sokovia Accords when MCU installments ignore them. I suggest you re-watch those breakdown with a more critical eye. Or watch S.K.'s videos where he debunks their breakdowns. And before I hear any shit about S.K. being an asshole or "he defended Southpaw" etc. - That doesn't change the validity of his arguments. He very accurately points out how their criticisms are bad.

A bit of a side tangent about the blip MCU thing, but what if you were flying in a plane when you blipped? Wouldn't there be thousands of ppl falling to their deaths? I've always wondered how far down the scale did the blip affect. We know it killed birds. I'm assuming it killed most animals. Did it take down insects? Cells?! What if you survived the snap, but half your cells died? Can you survive with half your cells? How many cells can you lose before there are problems?
@captbuckyohare558517 күн бұрын
It raises so many problematic questions that the films don't want to answer or don't know how to answer. It's 5 years later, so not only do they snap back 30000 feet in the air, but do they get snapped back in another part of the Galaxy? What happens when you lose half the population and also half of the animals and food supply? Half the insects and bees? Do plants count as life? Do bacteria? Are your gut bacteria separate from you as a lifeform? Can you lose your gut bacteria and be fine? Can you get snapped but your gut bacteria stays? If you snap everything back do you bring back everything including viruses and germs? Do you bring back cancer cells? What do you do? How would it work? Nope, nevermind.

A lot of problems y'all are overlooking: E1 - How does Vic manage to crash the car onto their property and get away with it? I hate how the henchmen even allow the VIPs to get out of the doors. If this was an abush they could all be shot. It's mad that they allow Sophia to open the trunk. What if this was a car bomb? (this becomes funnier after E7) Also the brother being dead means nothing. This doesn't mean the Penguin is innocent, for all you know, he had his people bring in the body and got lucky with the timing (oh wait he did lol). Oz also shot his car, that bullet hole should be something he should make up a story about. Also, Oz killed one of their henchman with that bus (this never comes up again, you'd think they'd want revenge for that alone, it would have been better to just not have the henchman die) The thing is, I can see how you could write this a bit better; Have a security leader like Mike Ehrmnentraut tell everyone to not touch the car as it arrives, and have him refuse to risk any of his staff's lives to open it. Have him conclude that the best course of action is to call the police to deal with it, (since I don't imagine the Falcones have a bomb disposal unit lol), and in order to call the police they'd have to let Oz go or move him to another location at least. E4 - Gassing the house is not a great way to kill everyone inside efficiently, but more importantly, opening a window is not a great way to make sure Johnny Vidi doesn't die. What if he just thought it was cold and closed it? What if he heard noises of people passing out, and went to look at what happened and overdosed on CO2?

I also find it stupid that luca and viti leave no guards at Ervard's basement to just chastize Sofia together : this prisoner is super important and could be used as leveraged, or could very well just die if some caretaker isn't near just in case. 5:16:05 Want to be more depressed? Mark Strong was also Sinestro in Green Lantern (2011). So it took DC 3 chances to do this wonderful actor justice, and he did it best in what, 8 minutes of screen time.

Penguin was really really amazing. I didn't care for all the Sofia focus in the penguin story but she was a well done character so it wasn't the end of the world. I didn't tune in once to see her and I think whenever the penguin wasn't in a scene you really did feel his absence.

I feel like you missed some important aspects of Penguin's character. But I'm only 3 hours or so through this, but you never seem to notice. They show multiple times that Oz is pathetic. When he kills Alberto in a rage, when he incorrectly calculates how certain players will react, how he deals with the ramifications of some situations. He's often pathetic. He's portrayed as a mastermind (arguably even lulling the audience into a false sense of security with him) but he's not always that good at it. Most of the time he fails to really understand how his plans will play out and so he almost dies CONSTANTLY. If it wasn't for Vic being as naive as he is he would have died, and he was taking a huge risk with that gamble. Which, again, was pretty pathetic. But this is such good writing because it doesn't break the fact that Penguin always loses in the end. Its fascinating to me that they were able to walk that very thin line of Penguin planning everything he does, arguably but most likely from the beginning of this show, constantly failing, and constantly finding a way to continue his schemes. I'm really surprised how good the writing was on this. Even the movie was not written with this kind of care. Although there's a lot detracting from the movie. Maybe it was but it was lessened by how bad of an actor Robert Pattinson is, and how boring Paul Dano was.

3:06:00 I would say Batman: The Animated Series as the last great Batman TV show. I inagine most people would say The Dark Knight as the last great Batman Movie,

Oz killing Victor reminded me of Tony murdering Christopher in The Sopranos.
@jcore098118 күн бұрын
It's so much worse here. Victor was a huge asset, not to mention a loyal friend. Tony killing Christopher was cold blooded but at least you could argue Christopher was beyond redemption by that point. Victor's death is a tragedy.
@SolarDragon00718 күн бұрын
@@jcore0981 True. Chrissy was a husk of himself by that point.

@@jcore0981 Yeah, it's more like if Walter White killed Jessie at the end of Braking Bad.
@beardog702016 күн бұрын
@@jcore0981 I agree. It is much more reprehensible in terms of morality. However, I think Tony murdering Chrissy was justified a hell of a lot more considering who Tony is, what he values, and how much of a liability Christopher had been up to that point. It’s also far more tragic of a story with everything Tony and Chrissy had been through up to that point. I like The Penguin, but The Sopranos blows it out of the water in every regard for me.

Did all of the Efap crew watch death note? I never heard them talk about it. I thought it's an interesting comparsion cause most of the time Light plans everything ahead, and the episode with Naomi Misora shows him out of his element, while the penguin is almost always in that kind of situation, and he excels at it.
