To me being spineless is having no balls. Penguin has balls, he's Evil but he has plenty of balls. People tend to confuse words and that's all this was.
@TheNoonish3 күн бұрын
Using that word is just a substitute for the criticism of Penguin’s core value. His core value is his bloated self image, which is disgusting. And he’s willing to risk his own life and everyone else’s to maintain it. He clings to that core value steadfastly. If it was a core value we approved of, like protecting his family or saving the innocent, we would respect how he’s able to cling to that. Very bad people can be utterly resolute in their beliefs, and willing to go any extreme to pursue them. Determination, by itself, is not a virtue. Josef Stalin was a doggedly determined man.
@TheNoonish3 күн бұрын
Of course, there is also something to be said about having sufficient strength of character to be able to confront your core principles. Many people are afraid to ever examine them, or are just incapable of it because they have blind spots. The issue is what name we have for this virtue, the ability to self examine and realize that something in your values may be fundamentally broken and require change. We applaud this when it happens in God of War: Ragnarok, when Kratos has to change his nature to change his fate. But does that make him spineless, in that he failed to stick to his principles? We normally wouldn’t say so. There’s a type of courage in being willing to change, and that’s a type of courage Penguin lacks, being incapable of confronting the ugliness at the heart of his personality. He’s probably even convinced himself that he didn’t really mean to kill his brothers because it’s easier than realizing how pathetic a man he is; unable to take any criticism and requiring validation from his mommy to make it through the day.
@KaNoMikoProductionsКүн бұрын
It depends entirely on your read of his character. Does he care about his mother's well-being? If so, he's being spineless in the finger-choppy scene, no way around it. Does he not care? Then it doesn't reflect on the existence of his spine at all. The criticism leveraged is based on the first scenario.
@mmanzanozr1Күн бұрын
@@KaNoMikoProductions spineless is defined as lacking resolution; weak and purposeless. Again i think people are confusing the word, Penguin has a clear goal he obtains it at the end by any means possible and he is not a weak character. He's a piece of shit absolutely, but not spineless.

@casbyness3 күн бұрын
Oswald is a psychopath whose madness is grounded in narcissism. He doesn't love his mother, he loves the idea of his mother and how that makes him feel about himself. He's capable of terrible evil because the key to his personality is his ability to be dishonest with even his own self. He's a pathological liar and won't admit to others what he did as a child because he can't be truthful about that event with himself. He's deluded, believing his own obvious lies to hold his ego and worldview together. Sofia is fascinated by Oz for the same reason Ash is fascinated by the Xenomorph in Alien. His amorality is 'pure'. Oz never needed a tragic event like family betrayal or death to compromise his morality. He has no morality to compromise. He's pure Id, incapable of true empathy. He never needed anything terrible to happen to him in order to make him immoral - he simply IS the terrible thing that happens to other people. By exploring who or what Oswald is, Sofia is perhaps gaining more insight into her father, which of course is therapeutic and cathartic for her.
@kaleygirlКүн бұрын
I agree, I wonder if these guys are more forgiving towards Oz than how I read the show. I don't think there's any evidence to suggest that Oz wouldn't have turned Sophia in regardless of whether or not she was rude to him that one time. He has no one in his life he isn't willing to compromise or betray to achieve his goals, and it's such a testament to the writers that you still want to root for him
@tuskinradar86882 күн бұрын
One of the things I love about Penguins lies is how often there's indirect truth in them, especially when he's assigning blame. His mom for example was the one that stabbed him, but since Sofia was the one who set this up its Sofia who stabbed him not his mom.
@samwallaceart288Күн бұрын
And that's not even a lie _to him_ because he doesn't believe in personal responsibility. His mom was _pushed_ to stab him the same way he pushes Sal and the Triad and Vic. He blames people for the actions but internally takes full credit for orchestrating it; so it's super easy for him to treat his mom's action as Sofia's orchestration and nothing more

When Oz and a certain *spoiler* are sitting on the bench I was wondering if he was gonna catch a stray or something. I knew he couldn't survive the story because he's an original character and I couldn't see them keeping him around. I had originally figured the Penguin would've already done the deed by then, yet there they were minutes before the finale was over. But then... when their conversation headed that direction, and he started his friendship-hug-of-death, I just pursed my lips and said, "Oh okay, i got you.." I instantly felt all the future conversations of despair permeating through my mind knowing that people would lose it when they saw that scene, but the entire show set up that it wasn't gonna work out. 'The Penguin' is such an excellent program and I felt so empty after finishing it because I wanted more content, so now I'm enjoying re-watching 'The Sopranos.' Interestingly the bombshell of the Vic/Oz dynamic is felt in "Sopranos" too with a certain character and his "nephew," and also explored in another amazing show 'Boardwalk Empire' in it's second season. Is not often you see the next generation snuffed out by the previous one (amongst the main cast) when they had shown such great potential, so it always hits like a sledgehammer when it's portrayed on screen.

You could say it's left for interpretation whether Oz' was born that way as a psychopath or if there is something to his upbringing. There is not much to work with but his mom saying "he always was so needy" could hint to him being treated differently by her due to his leg. There is a certain worship of strength in this family and maybe Oz wasn't loved that much because he was born "weak". So maybe that's why he always wants to become the best, showing it to all those privileged people (or perceived as), to finally get in a position where this mysterious "love" is finally given to him, which he never truly experienced at some level. He only feels there is something lacking but the closer he gets to it the closer he gets to this inner pit of a soul and similarly someone like Victor who gets closest to being "loved" by the Penguin gets swallowed by this bottomless abyss.

The reason “Ra’s Al Ghul” famously has 2 different pronunciations (“Ras” or “Rasche”) is because DC themselves do not know what the proper Arabic pronunciation for “The Demon’s Head” is. So neither is necessarily correct or incorrect “Falcone” being different depending on the adaptation I’m not sure why, but I’m assuming it’s a similar reason
@elyrienvalkyr81674 күн бұрын
It's also the fact Ras just sounds waaaay better than rasche.

There are plenty of Italian-Americans who "Americanized" their surnames by dropping the final vowels, in pronunciation or spelling or both, so it's perfectly reasonable for adaptations to choose one or the other. Indeed, it would fit in-universe for individual Falcones to pronounce the name differently, depending on how assimilated they were or wanted to portrat themselves as being.

Just a poor soul without an identity gotten mugged in a corrupt city.

The argument is that Oz would rather let the person he ostensibly care about suffer than admit to what he has done, and that this is spineless. I hardly think it’s clear what people mean when they say “spineless.” It seems to be more idiosyncratic to the person than one might think. Therefore i think taking issue with the use of the word spineless is probably going to be an uphill battle 🙂↕️ Edit: also right after that, the fellow seems to think that one’s degree of sympathy towards a character is what makes them not a villain, which means that his use of the phrase “sympathetic villain” at the start can’t actually mean anything to him. He’s tired of something he doesn’t understand - with no tragic backstory, he does not sympathize and hence, a proper villain, one-dimensional, is achieved.
@KaNoMikoProductionsКүн бұрын
Maybe. I certainly don't see how Mauler's argument is in any way sensical. Either Oz cares about his mother's well being and he is being spineless, or he doesn't care about her well being and he's not being spinless (because his "spine" doesn't come into the equation in that scene).

Sorry Mauler, but I absolutely do not agree on the "spine" argument. Oz didn't have the spine to admit to his mother what he did. It's that simple. It's by far the easier option for him to perpetuate the falsehood and watch his mother suffer than it is to admit to his misdeed. The only reading where it's NOT spineless is if he doesn't care at all for his mother's pain, period. And if that's the reading, then what he did was neither spineless nor "spiney." It was not a dilemma for him, so his actions did not show strength of character or lack thereof. You are just wrong. It's that simple.
