When I try to explain to him the concept of expected skillsets and professions (Ripley being skilled with mechanical tools is fine because we know she's an Engineer), he literally thinks that I'm proving him right. He's going a step further and trying to compare Ripley to Holdo and thinks that people "immediately" took issue with her the moment they saw the gown and purple hair. On the subject of WWII and Star Wars, yes. The original Death Star Run, before Luke enters the trench, a classic dogfight style battle occurs between the X-Wings and TIE fighters. If you look at that battle, the core of the tactics involves getting behind someone to fire all your front-facing guns to destroy the enemy fighter. Lucas used this as a shorthand to show the stakes of the battle. So later, when Vader and the two other TIEs are behind Luke in a trench he cannot maneuver in, it's very well established that he's an absolute goner. You can even extend standard naval tactics, like the formation in RotJ to understand that the "battleship and cruiser" style formations still exist, where you have ships of differing size and weapons loadout attack in formation. The extended universe and other things expand on how Star Destroyers are essentially battleships of one kind and Mon Calamari cruisers battleships of a different kind. But all of this was used as shorthand to tell the audience that both sides actually had strategy. Compare and contrast with TLJ, where in the opening battle AND the slow-speed chase the First Order PUT THE FLAGSHIP IN FRONT, unprotected, with its escorts TRAILING it. Poe never would have destroyed the Dreadnought had its Star Destroyer escorts were in FRONT of it. Poe would never get within hailing distance from Hux because his lackeys would have shot him down, let alone the TIE Fighters that should constantly be patrolling the ships. This is the sort of thing that shows that Rian didn't know what he was doing. He was so focused on the visuals of a bomber squadron that he forgot HOW THEY ALL OPERATE. Even Lucas made a better effort here. You would never throw your bombers at a target that is well-prepared to defend against you - in WWII a lot of bombing was done at an altitude so high it was impossible to scramble fighters to get you in time, or at night where they couldn't see you coming, and so on. If they went against a target that could defend itself with fighters they would send fighter-bombers.... like the Y-WINGS.
@essexclass81683 жыл бұрын
Just to add to this, whenever the USNAF and IJNAF used large, comparatively slower bombers to hit ships from close range and low altitude, they usually did so at high speeds, almost slinging the bomb out or in the Japanese' case, by having a pilot fly a large rocket into the hostile ship. The crap in tlj was closer pre wwi balloon drone strikes than anything else, but at least those were bombing helpless cities, not escorted squadrons, and on top of that thosr slow,vulnerable things were unmanned. EDIT: Austrlia and the UK and Italian RAFs "skip bombed" too

Every discussion on EFAP goes something like this. MauLer: I could be wrong. Rags: I'm never wrong. Jay: What is "wrong?" Edit: Also I wanted to point out a couple things I learned from the flag discussion. The lobster flag was for a skin cancer charity thing called "Don't Be a Lobster" where those flags were hoisted in a couple places one day. The Is Lay of Man flag is a conundrum. Some speculate it was the Manx coat of arms. Others suggest it was meant to be a form of protest against the British that the locals will never kneel. But the most popular theory is, it was created by a prognosticator who had a vision of a game of dark souls that would go into its fourth iteration and bring forth a foul headless creature whose sole purpose was to kick the enigmatic purveyor of rhino milk known only by the letter J.

You don’t even have to go that far; she dyes her hair weird colors. Okay, why? In the canon, it’s because she “expresses herself.” So... that’s a nothing burger. And she actively undermines her authority by making herself look like she’s having a midlife crisis. Great character. But what if we find out she dyes it for a significant reason? Say to remember her daughter, who loved the vossian dawn lily? That said daughter had joined the Rebellion, against Holdo’s wishes, and when she tried to plead for her daughter’s life, she was shut out, and had to watch the Empire execute her only child, and so she dyes her hair that color to remember her. Why couldn’t we have that?

"Who will be the most inconsistent character in Star Wars?" Can I say the soundtrack? Because I'm not entirely convinced John Williams is even composing anymore. In the second trailer, you know, the one where 80% of the trailer was old movies, I thought the score didn't sound like the Star Wars theme so much as the Star Wars theme was jammed through a Hans Zimmer program. Much like how Gareth Edwards or Lord and Miller were replaced, I think John Williams was replaced with Michael Giacchino or some other generic American composer. At the very least, the score in the sequels has been very uninspired and unmemorable. In TFA, the only score I connected with was whenever the Binary Sunset motif played, and that was entirely because of memberberries. Since the music is so integral to Star Wars as a whole, that's why your brain keeps thinking the sequels aren't legit, because the film score itself doesn't feel legit either.
@jebalitabb82285 жыл бұрын
Alex thats a fair point, the music feels so mundane and just average now, compared to the imperial march or duel of the fates for example

John Williams I don't believe has ever composed the trailers, that is usually shipped out to a different team. Just like the editors of the film very rarely edit the trailer. It is a very different skill set, and when you get the same group doing both a good example of that is Suicide Squad.

This. Say what you want about the prequels, but those soundtracks all gave at least one new memorable piece. Phantom Menace gave us Duel of the Fates, Attack of the Clones gave us the Arena(Wait, that was also TPM, wasn't it?), and Revenge of the Sith gave us Battle of Heroes.

I've been giving a lot of thought to the claim some people make that "It's JUST a movie," so we shouldn't care so much about it. But it's not just a movie. It's a story. And stories have shaped minds and culture for millennia by imparting lessons of morality, dedication, etc. Stories are important. And Star Wars has been one of the most culturally significant stories in the world for the past 40 years. This is especially important since it's a story about "space wizards intended for children". It's not like children are particularity impressionable or anything. It is a grave mistake to underestimate the impact Star Wars has had on society. Now go clean your room, bucko.

Hell, they can't even stay consistent on that claim because they'll simultaneously praise TLJ as a subversive masterpiece and dismiss it as just a film about space wizards for children. The problem is they're not arguing in good faith, they're throwing everything and the kitchen sink out there and hoping something lands.

Hawkiavelli More simply : It’s a movie. A movie is a product. A product people paid for, and won’t get a refund for, so if they didn’t like it, they have good reasons to be pissed at it, especially considering that this product being delivered will be delivered in only one version. Meaning that no better version will be delivered. It’s not like a computer, where if they mess up one version of the software, it’s not too bad because, even if you don’t get a refund, you just have to buy the next updated version when you have the money. To get the updated version of SW, « having enough money » basically would mean « having billions of dollars ».

Lightsabers use power cells. However, the arc-wave technology that contains and shapes the energy into a blade recycles the energy back into the power cell, effectively making it very long lasting, and in some cases, if constructed expertly, it could last indefinitely. Anyone can turn a lightsaber on/off if the lightsaber is constructed with an external ignition switch. You could theoretically construct a lightsaber to have an internal activation switch, which could then only be accessed using telekinetic Force powers (there are some like this in the EU), but we haven't seen anything like that in the films. While the Force is not necessarily required to activate a lightsaber, it is required to construct a lightsaber. Jedi/Sith would attune themselves to the lightsaber components, needed to attune and charge the crystals of the lightsaber with their Force energy, and also needed the precision of the Force to align and fuse the components together. For this reason, lightsabers could never be successfully mass-produced. Wielding lightsabers was also not the same as wielding a typical melee weapon. The arc-wave technology mentioned above resulted in a gyroscopic effect that simulated weight, but this effect would feel awkward and clumsy to the uninitiated. Like anything else, it would take practice and acclimation to become familiar with it, and of course to not cut yourself in half. This is why training sabers existed for Jedi/Sith that were still learning. When Rey and Finn could effectively use a lightsaber in TFA without any familiarity, it absolutely trashed the established canon of lightsabers, and robbed them of their mystique, especially since Finn doesn't even appear to be Force-sensitive. We only see two non-Force-sensitive uses of lightsabers in the previous films. Han Solo briefly uses Luke's saber to disembowel a dead Taun-Taun, which is an unremarkable use of a saber. And General Grevious, who was actually trained in lightsaber combat by a Darth. So, the fact that Rey and Finn could do what they did with a lightsaber in TFA breaks established canon in a rather significant way.

David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston are the best. Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi could have been amazing, but the script for some of their episodes let them down.

Thank you. I’m not alone. I wished Eccelson had three season but I enjoyed what I got. But I stopped after season six because the writing felt lacking. Which makes me feel bad for Smith and Capolti.
