@phyrexian_dude46453 ай бұрын
@@fireironthesecond2909 It depends from person to person but there are 3 point when you could say those were the main reasons. 1. Their defense of anticonsumer monetization. This was around the time when loot boxes were at their high. They were, at the time, game developers working for companies pushing those and talking about it on negative light would had put their job on risk. The wise thing that they should had done at the time was to NOT talk about it but they decided to defend it... TWICE. Giving the impessions that they were sell outs on the worse of the worse of gaming. And that started the first wave of people leaving. 2. The exit of Dan from the channel and the entry of the current guy. If he left because he saw the writting on the wall and that the channel was doomed when the new people entered the channel, he was pushed out or he really wanted to do his own thing its up to debate. But what it undeniable is that, just like as game theory, the channel lost its face and voice and the direction of the channel started to shift. But those are the signs of the begining of the end for them but it was fine, they could had recovered... until... 3. The WWII teams video... you know the one... that was by far the absolute worst and impossible to defend take that they had ever had and the moment the channel was doomed. And if you add the mask off moment they had on Twitter on the backlash of that video with "if you dont like it, we dont want you here", well... their fall from nearly 3 million subs to their current numbers just said that we took that deal without looking back.

Also thank you for the explanation, its sad because I watched their videos religiously, Kursk, Bismarck, Genghis they were the sugar in my morning coffee and then I got called a Nazi when I said Stalin wasn’t a nice person and I was like “well fuck you too then” and never looked back. Since then I have gone to university studying history and I have at least learned that Extra History isn’t the exception and that a lot of historians are far-left leaning but it’s still sad seeing how far into pandering this once mighty historical channel has gone. @@fireironthesecond2909 On your first question... The video in question is "Stop Normalizing N*zis - Socially Conscious Game Design" (sorry for the stupid self censor but YT blocks comments for any word they dont like these days.) And here is the quote that killed their channel at the begining of the video: "There you are. Playing PVP in your WWII shooter. And all of the sudden, you are a N*zi. You didnt ask for this, you didnt chose this. Yet, there it is and it threated not differently than playing a British soldier." That line was so bad in so many levels that it simply showed that the ones that were trying to push an agenda and no longer cared about games, the original premise of their main channel. As an example of how bad is that take ill use this line "You didnt ask for this, you didnt chose this.", as a mather of fact, the played DID because they bought a WWII game, unless it was on the Pacific Theater, odds are that you would inevitably fight as germany on the PVP mode. On the Extra History side, i too used to watch it but around the same time, when the new people took over, the tone shifted in a pretty bad direction. It used to be a more respectfull lecture but then it suddenly showed this "hello fellow kids!" energy that really didnt fit. I lost track from them after that which was around 5 years ago but considering what you described on Stalin, their latest trash take and their prior one on the D&D Orc issue, its not suprising that they have not changed at all.

It's very rare to find someone who genuinely guilts you for it - to the point where I occassionally respond to those comments with "yes" just to see the person instantly STFU. The only way to un-noob yourself is to learn from other people by asking questions. I do that a lot. I've never gotten backlash for asking a question. I think it's because the desire to learn and better yourself is a genuine virtue. You dream your teammates have either expert skills or the desire to learn and improve, so when you tell them what to do they put their efforts into it. The reason everyone hates a bad teammate is not because they're a noob - it's because they refuse to learn. No matter how many times you tell them not to stand in the fire, they still do it - almost as if they had an allergic reaction to advice and now feel compelled to do it more.

The funny thing is, the core idea itself isn't entirely without merit. The real problem is twofold: it would create unwanted incentives to "game the system", making interactions less genuine and more performative, and even more importantly... it would be *these* guys setting up the rules of what does and does not constitute as "civil" and "good sport". And once you give people like them this kind of power, it's only a question of time before it all turns into an online pseudo-social-credit system used to favor the in-group and oppress the out-group. Because that's what happens every single time when people with illusions of authority try to police communities, and it always leads to them fracturing. Just look at all those circle-jerk and low-sodium boards out there for a clear example.

I love how EC's answer to "how do we combat loneliness in gaming" is to implement options that will he useful for an extremely tiny handful of people instead of... addressing the cause of it? EC is like a therapist that teaches you how to cope with your problems instead of dealing directly with them. They'll even charge you for it!
@xenn49853 ай бұрын
Coping is a good thing though. Many problems arent yours to solve.
@91Caesar3 ай бұрын
I mean I know what you are going for with the therapist comparison, but a good part of therapy is learning to handle the inevitable emotional rises and falls you face in every day life. For example, you don't have an anxiety problem because you get anxious. Getting anxious is perfectly normal and healthy. You have an anxiety problem because you can't handle getting anxious. So learning how to handle being anxious is useful

This culture of toxic positivity has just been the polar opposite swing of the Xbox live days but you still get the same basic result.

So somehting that got missed is that we used to have the system EC mentioned, but simpler. It was called private servers and it let players choose if they wanted to join games that had multiple levels of moderation and interaction rules including often offering fundamental game rule changes. A server cpuld have its own external community and often a community would have servers in multiple game for members to hop on and chat with likeminded friends. Larger communities would even have both private and public servers running to allow randoms to see what they offered. As a bonus games eith private servers are also nearly impossible to kils, because as long as someone wants to play they can launch a server to do so. BF1942 still has games running years after support ended. They died because private servers make selling DLC microtransactions and gatcha more difficult. Now everyone queues in groups no larger than a single team, that needs to be assembled in advance because drop-in is basically gone.
