Going for a takedown in BJJ can be tough for newer grapplers that are limited with takedowns. I know that many of my students struggle with this and I've received tons of questions from people who want to go for takedowns but are afraid to attempt it and get smashed.
In this video I share a really simple tip to finish a single leg when you're sprawled on. If you watch my body position you'll notice that I'm not in direct danger of kimuras or guillotines which is important for those of us training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The key to making the technique work and being able to finish the takedown is to lock the persons hip and leg in place. I talk about this in the video. But it makes all the difference.
If you struggle with going for takedowns or just have trouble once the person sprawls out on you. Give this technique a try.
Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the vids, Chewy! With a wrestling background I'm getting really frustrated because takedowns and side control are really all I'm *OK* at as a 1 stripe white belt. The people at my gym don't really like being taken down and they usually pull guard on me. It's super frustrating because I feel stuck in their guards. I don't want to be a dick and just stand up and back away but I wanna try to hit some different takedowns.. My professor teaches takedowns multiple times per week, but when we roll at the end of class we start on knees because most people aren't comfortable on their feet. Thanks!

Skylar Cary I train in a small gym in a small town, but a wrestler comes in once a week to specifically teach and work takedowns, and the general level of skill and comfort with takedowns has skyrocketed since that started. Maybe you could be the catalyst that pushes your fellows to up their standing game...

Compete - You'll beast everyone. Just try not to mess around and let your opponent get grips, just shoot for the takedown once the fight begins.

A Good Defence for the guy on top is to roll forward (tight) over his shoulder and he ends up in an omoplata! A great way to frustrate wrestlers 🤼‍♀️😎

Noel Connors it‘s „fancy stuff“ but even if it’s not working you are not in danger of the takedown (grip) anymore.

Thank you so much for, yet another, great video! When attempting this adjustment, do you also pull your elbow towards your hip as you walk/drive, or is the elbow only working to block the lower leg after it is positioned? Sorry if you addressed that in the video already, I’m about to watch it again 😁

Hiya Chewy! Just been bingeing tour videos for the last 4 hours so hope you dont mind a question.... I just started JiuJitsu a week ago and have had 3 classes, although ive done martial arts for the last 10 years on and off. When i started class last week i went to the only two classes, it seems, where i was the only white belt so i ended up going with the game plan of "jump straight into their closed guard and just survive by keeping my elbows close and sprawling my legs the moment i think theyre going for anything", and i got tapped constantly, which i expected before i walked in the door for class #1. However, the last class i went to, there were like 4 other white belts about my size and i found i was able to get submissions/get to dominant positions. Im finding im very ok with being constantly tapped out by higher level belts, but i feel guilty for being able to make small winning moves against other white belts; i think i feel off because 1) in my mind im winning by using some strength vs no strength and an effortless technique (even though my first ever submission was because i was able to get on a triangle from open guard, no muscle used when applying it), and 2) it feels like im just beating up people with less grappling ability than me and that doesnt help them learn. Is there another way that I should instead be thinking about this situation? Have you run across this in your last 10+ years? Cheers Scotty

I suck at takedowns and 99% of the time they sprawl with both legs back and i am just there in turtle position, any advice ? Other than training more takedowns (which i am trying to improve)

If you're not getting any grips on their legs, back of their knees etc. It's probably the setup that's the problem. I would suggest something, but instead you can just search for "double leg setup" or something like that. At least you're not getting guillotined! Oh, and look into the blast double, I've found it to be super easy in BJJ, compared to a regular double.

Hey chewy, brand new white belt here. i was just wondering: what is the risk of getting cauliflower ear when practicing bjj? (i don’t plan on competing as of right now, just training for exercise)

Could the person defending extend his knee and pull leg out or would that expose them further for additional take down shots? (Noob nobelt)

technique seems to be for stronger guys I feel some couldn't run u over chewys size so easy they had a sequence at the end of it pulling the leg into a more leveraged double leg run down from completely behind them just for you small guys to keep in mind if you find problem i I know I do
