I think it's one of the EHX 9 series I believe they were called... They have one called the C9 that was like an organ or something but there was a whole weird series of them. That'd be my starting search if you're actually looking for one.

Having a friend who I jam with from time to time, he owned an Electro-Harmonix Mel 9 Tape Pedal after I showed him a video I watched of it being tested. I enjoyed playing with it, using it for playing "I Stay Away" by Alice in Chains, and hearing other people play "Kashmir" and "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin, and "Wonderwall" by Oasis (cello accompaniment). I wish I had that pedal so that I can ensnare myself in a world of atmospheric ambient ecstasy of orchestral strings coming from my guitar.

I find it amazing. The unfavorable comments echo those whose playing is more arrogant and self centered. In my 60 years of playing almost every genre, and knowing what some of my friends in the biz like Entwhistle, Frampton, Townsend, Gatton, Toni C, Buchanan, had this been around in our time we could have done without some of the extras. We all strived to get as full a sound as we could. Even ran through good and bad keyboard players to get it. Could have saved me a lot of headaches.

I've been doing this for years - just use a MIDI pickup and controller, and you'll have every synth sound (VST or hardware) available... I regularly record with it, so I can use that same MIDI signal over and over again on various sounds. Usually sounds far better than the built-in sounds on this pedal too, and you've still got a separate (clean) guitar signal to work with.
