good luck. I was up to 300mg a day 4 years ago. now I'm down to 1/4 of a 75mg pill per day. I tried doing 1/2 of a 75mg every other day but the vertigo/disorientation was still there, so far taking the 1/4 each day has been enough to keep the withdrawals away.

I've been through the same thing. I would have weird electric shocks go through my head and body. I would also feel EXTREME nausea, to the point that I could barely talk to people, it made me have a very subdued sensation. I would also hear strange noises, like something was happening in the next room or even outside. I was quite bothered by this sensation until I realised it was just an auditory sensation coming from myself. People going through this should certainly not feel like they're the only ones experiencing these sensations when coming off venlafaxine.

Effexor turned me into an emotionless slug 🐌
@cg08253 жыл бұрын
I never realized what effexor did to me until I was no longer on it. It seemed to work very hard at suppressing my emotions. When I came off the scary thing is the emotions that were tucked away in the bottom of the "bag" were now right there in front of me and that is where I am struggling now. I used to get fits of rage at one point in life and I feared that happening again. Thankfully it hasn't. I came up with a plan of what I would do if such and such happened...you know all those CBT coping skills that they teach us that most of us toss aside. I think I am more open to using them now and at least finding what works and what doesn't I even got an inflatable punching bag to put in the spare room and there are times where I go in there and can whack the you know what out of it and it helps big time.

Meds do great things for people so in no way do I ever say meds are good or bad in of themselves. I had tried cymbalta before effexor and really had zero results and this is when cymbalta was pretty new I would say around 2005 or so. I don't know if chemically the 2 are the same but I know they are both SNRI's. There was a time in my life where effexor was very helpful but I have wanted to come off for years now but knowing the difficulty I put it off for a long time. There are people that take medications for other stuff every day--people use an inhaler for asthma or have to take pills for blood pressure or whatever but sadly with the stigma people are against psych drugs. That opens up a new can of worms but just saying.

effexor was the devil for me. the side effects while on it were insane. i'd be up for 3 days straight feeling strung out. then i'd crash for a full day. i also had very morbid thoughts about death constantly. when i started to taper off those thoughts subsided. then the w/d's were terrible brain zaps and intense vomiting that would happen out of no where. one time i was at a restaurant and i had to run out the front door and i puked in the parking lot. im glad i could make it out of the restaurant. but those w/d's lasted for like 2 months while i tapered off. my doctor said he's only seen one other patient have as much trouble getting off as me. i guess im just a unique case. i hope everyone else has no problems coming off if they decide to stop taking it. It reminds me of David Bowie's line in Space Oddity where he says, 'The stars looked very different tonight.' So my thoughts had been becoming so frenetic and surreal, but reached a particularly poignant pitch the other day when I decided to read (merely 'read') the words of Don Mclean's 'Vincent' out to my Mum. I just started choking up and got to the point where I couldn't finish it.

I have been fully off for about 21 days now. I had been doing good for a bit but now I am feeling a return in withdrawal symptoms and my blood pressure has spiked. I am going to the doctor next week so I am going to discuss with him but thought it is odd that the w/d symptoms almost stopped then started back again. I took effexor xr for 16 years and we had discussed several times tapering off and I finally started this year. I began tapering way back in Jan 2021 (at the same time I was having success with getting TMS treatment). Unfortunately as the taper continued it almost got intolerable so we decided to pause at 75 for a bit. I resumed the taper back around the 2nd week of Sept going from 75 to 37.5 then off. I had a myriad of symptoms the typical shock sensation, dizziness, headache, etc. Once I was able to ride it out I was still dealing with the mental side effects such as irritability, feeling short fused, and a bit anxious. The depression didn't return thankfully. A few days ago I checked my blood pressure and I thought it would be a lot lower since stopping and it was higher than ever. I am still in that boat wondering why my pressure isn't going down much (it was better controlled when I was on the med than off it which is odd. Now going into week four I wonder why I am still experiencing so many lingering w/d symptoms and this blood pressure issue.

Your video was very informative. Like you, I was prescribed 300mg of Effexor XR. I had a horrible experience coming off Zyprexa and Cymbalta several months ago, too quickly, it was a disaster, so I wanted to be careful about coming off Effexor XR too fast. I've been on the Effexor since early August. Anyways, due to a particular side effect, which was constipation, I had to titrate fast. Down from 300mg to 150mg, then after a week, down to 75mg, and within a few days completely off. I'm curious that you mention nothing about constipation? My experience was (in my own words) the Effexor seemed to be blocking the signal going to the receptor that controlled the motility in my digestive tract. Nothing worked to counter it, psyllium, miralax, you name it. I had been on so many other anti-depressants and found no luck, and the sexual dysfunction was also very annoying with the other drugs. After being on Effexor, about 6-8 weeks, I found not only did the sexual function disappear, but improved my overall function. Effexor has been the only anti-depressant I've ever found to do this. Did you find Effexor XR constipating?

It seems like every time I'm thinking about how you're doing, you post a video :) I had a friend in college a few years ago who was coming off effexor, but her doctor was an idiot and took her off it all at once. She got horrible brain zaps, memory loss, and was often too sick to get out of bed. It ruined her first semester of college. She told me after she was over the withdrawal, that she didn't remember a lot of the first semester. I'm surprised but glad that it's going so well for you coming off it so quickly. I really like old-fashioned razors too. I bought a safety razor a few years ago because I didn't like having to throw away plastic razors, and I don't like triple blade razors (you can't get double blade razors anymore, unless you get disposables). I really liked it too, although it took a while to get the angle right when you're shaving. (I used it on my underarms). But about a week after I put the last blade I had in it, it fell on the shower floor and broke.

Later, I would try to go to school but often times I was throwing up and had to go home. I slept as much as I could and my GPA suffered. I felt like it was a crutch for me and my life is not the same anymore, the flatness the medication caused seems like it will never leave... I started taking this medication around age 14 or 15 up until I was 18 and I feel fried.

I took effexor 150 mg for almost 14 years. Two months ago I decided I wanted to get off of it. My doctors plan was take 75 mg for a month then 37.5 for a month and then done. So going from 150 mg to 75 mg was no big deal. I didn't really notice any difference. Then when I went from 75 mg to 37.5 mg I felt shitty for the first 6 days or so. Day 2 was the worst and then after than it got better. Now here is where things got really bad. When I went from 37.5 to nothing it was horrible. Instead of day 2 being the worst, it actually got worse with each day. I'm on day 7 of not taking any effexor and I feel worse than I did on day 2. The brain zaps are extremely bad, I can't turn my head without being dizzy, I'm irritable and just feel drained like I had the flu. I may end up getting back on 37.5 mg's just so I don't have to feel this way anymore. I called my doctor and his response was nothing I can do for ya and you are probably gonna feel that way for a month or two or forever. So basically I'll be back on effexor not for depression, but so that I don't feel like crap all day. I can't do this anymore. I'd rather take the demon drug than feel this way.

Mirtazapine has definitely helped my effexor withdrawal. I've stepped down from 75 mg to 30 mg over the last two weeks. Fish oil, vitamins and lots of water helps. Please THINK TWICE before opening the capsules and taking the beads - In my experience they hit your system immediately and you end up overdosing while trying to come down! Get your doctor to give you lower doseages over a few weeks. Good look!
@kristiofca17 жыл бұрын
No, he was referring to taking out a few beads from the capsules, gradually taking just a few out and titrating down to where there is none left, albeit as he stated, there are 100's of beads in one capsule, so this will take a very long time. I feel this is the best way to ensure no withdrawal effects, as long as you take out a tiny amount and go very slow. In David Bowie's famous line "It's time to leave the capsule, if you dare..."

Doctor's must be lying when they say their patients quit effexor cold turkey and were fine (minimal side effects). I've tried many times, only to be back on them, and its not because of my anxiety/depression, its because of the discontinuation syndrome and this seems to be the overwhelming consensus. Chances are those doctors never hear from their patients again because the patient changed their doctor.
@nokomismn96853 жыл бұрын
Good thinking. I agree that those patients who seemingly had okay cold turkeys may have simply appeared that way to the prescriber because they did not return to same individual. Why would they return to him/her when his/her advice wasn't helpful? My own experience was that I jumped off effexor after tapering down to 37.5 mg (the lowest dose available in capsules.) I was seemingly okay after that for a few weeks but then a severe protracted withdrawal set in. I suffered high anxiety, almost to the level of akathisia, as well as abdominal pain each morning that I self-diagnosed as ulcerative colitis or cancer. I thought I was dying. It's not my intention to scare anyone. I was on a high dose of venlafaxine/effexor for over a decade, and had a precipitous taper, so it's not surprising I've suffered a difficult withdrawal.
@Maximusbyronus3 жыл бұрын
@@nokomismn9685 How long have you been off of Effexor? I took Effexor for 17 years. It took me about 9 months to ween off 75mg and I've been completely off for about 4 months!! Sorry to hear about your akathisia, that sounds horrible. Thankfully my side effects have been minimal; some depression/anxiety spells early on, but they seem to have dissipated (knocks on wood), no brain zaps or insomnia.
@nokomismn96853 жыл бұрын
@@Maximusbyronus - I took the last regular dose of effexor August 15, 2018. When I went into protracted withdrawal, I then started a low dose of mirtazapine to treat the symptoms. Only problem is, I quickly developed an addiction to mirtazapine. My theory is it's like a continuation of effexor, since both are so-called "antidepressants." (We really need a different name for these terrible drugs.) I was on multiple psychiatric drugs for decades, so weaning off has been difficult. It's not as bad now as at the beginning, but I have to admit it's still rough much of the time. At least I'm down to just one drug, mirtazapine, and am taking only 1.5 mg per day. Congratulations for getting off effexor! We're smart to get that neurotoxin out of our bodies

I know it can be so horrible! The emotional lability is so tough yet it almost draws you in because you realize how strangely good it feels to regain the depths of your emotions, yet you get sick of crying at the drop of a hat. It feels like your whole emotional being, the inner architecture and scaffolding thats held you up all these years completely crumbles away leaving you in a boneless heap of helplessness. I'm taking 187.5mg, it feels pretty relaxing but still not as good as Paxil 20mg. Did the 300mg help social anxiety more? According to a published article I read, there's no benefit above 75mg for social anxiety.
@brokenharbour10 жыл бұрын
Honestly no, and at that dose the sexual dysfunction became very annoying. 150 mg was perfect for me. Supposedly something like 80% serotonin transporter occupancy occurs at 75 mg with the higher doses not resulting in proportional increases in occupancy so that article doesn't surprise me all that much, but I would be surprised if a doctor would use that fact in practice. Most doctors go by patient response without looking too much into the literature. That being said, the 75 mg makes sense if you are just considering serotonin alone. Norepinephrine action kicks in at >150 mg /day so it could be more effective at higher doses. Personally I found something like strattera (atomoxetine) at 100 mg which is a "pure" NRI not effective for social anxiety even when combined with Lexapro. So yeah, go by how you respond to it and by how much you can tolerate the side effects but that finding you mention is in accordance with my experience. The higher dose helped more with some of my obsessions and laid to rest my almost insatiable appetite to find the perfect drug (a futile effort when you want results fast). It is more activating at higher doses though.
