In Uganda they do it all the time. The cables hang outside all over the shop. Often they cause shots because the cable starts to lag and weirdly stretch meaning more resistance, heating up and burning. Total mayhem. I wouldn't recommend it in hot climate.

Good video. Electrical installations on caravan parks is what I do, so it’s interesting to see a video on them as you don’t get many on KZbin. Main issue on older caravan parks is 2 core SWA looped between pitches. Lock nut on gland becomes corroded which discontinues the CPC and earth fault loop impedance exceeds maximum permitted tabulated value as per table 41.3 of BS7671. This is not always caused by water ingress specifically, but the sea salt air - you’ll find caravan parks near the coast have this issue. Brass lock nuts should always be used as they are non ferrous!

What would be your suggested setup for the consumer unit in a converted camper van? I see a lot of kits for sale but most seem to be obscure brands. Your advice would be appreciated.

Do you know if working inside a caravan on the standard 230v system classed as a special location, or is it just the hookups etc that are classed as a special location.
@efixx2 жыл бұрын
They're both classed as special locations. Section 721 covers the inside of the caravan. 😊

Can you state the regulation for inside a caravan being a special location and explain the regulation meaning as I queried NICEIC and they said inside a caravan is not a special location.

If the supply to the pitch is a 10mm or 16mm SWA 2 core & is RCD protected what rating must that RCD be if there is 30mA to each socket outlet at the pitch? Does the SWA supplying the pitch need to be 100mA with a time delay or just straight 100mA? Otherwise surely it could trip at the source?

Does part P apply to caravans?

What if it’s not a TNC-S system or TT but a TN-S set up? Do these regulations still apply? Can you rely on the earthing of a TN-S? Thanks
@bonnywail Жыл бұрын
Yes but can you guarantee that the Tn-S supply is true Tn-s or it's actually PME. A simple continuity test between neutral and Earth at DU would give you a better idea. Often enough it's not a true Tn-s.. Personally I would bring the Tn-s supply to the DU then TT the supply to the hook ups,

Oh me oh my the tears, tantrums and headaches caused by caravan sites especially as overcrowded as they are to the east coast. Many hours and days spent on callouts to such places to resolve problems not apparent to the average site owner or general holidaymaker. Overloads caused on a cold near winters night (tin tents are not best insulated beyond pleasant weather) stress to neighbouring caravans, supply systems and transformer usually caused by the sale and use of unregulated electrical products (ie not approved by any western standard) causing transients, interference and more concerning and more common excessive neutral currents causing thermal stress to conductors caused by harmonics of a busy site (i have attended several distribution units on sites that have been turned into chard messes) as a problem some may have contended with: loss of a neutral to parts of a site to which some poor tin tent owner notices as when they are watching coronation street on the telly to the moment the thing explodes due to the poor thing trying to drop 400+ volt through itself... Simple short vid good on ya.

I share your pain with this experience! Loss of neutral on three phase supply to pitch pillar caused an imbalance voltage to 5 residential park homes and blew tons of appliances, boilers, TVs, dyson heaters.

Do the same rules apply to campsite only hookups Ie for a fridge or phone charger etc

If it’s a campsite same rules apply

Outdoor mains power ... I think we are going to be seeing a lot more as the use of "dirty little generators" become frowned-upon and Ev's get more popular. Very interesting, caravan sparks have a lot to teach us

I'm sorry, but did the commenters see something I have missed here? When are you going to explain the requirements of the caravan electrical hook ups, you have mentioned them but nothing elts
