Regarding leash or no leash? Let me quote Vasco Vellez, a pro efoiler: ‘Here’s my 2c on the leash issue. I’ve been riding eFoils longer than most for 4,5 years, mine came off Lift in the first week of production. On the second month I got taken out by a wave and saw my board head for rocks, way too fast for me to swim before impact. Thankfully a surfer saved my board 🙏🥰. I stopped and immediately bought one from my local shop.. I NEVER go out for a ride without it, period! I feel ‘naked’ without one, it’s simply part of my essential equipment. It’s also out of consideration for surfers down the line. I run the first eFoil school in Australia, my students will wear a leash from lesson 2. Every single one of them thank me for it. We never had an accident or complaint. My leash is one I designed, after R&D of a few broken ones. So I got some made from the experience of know what is needed and how to make it fit Foiling in particular. It’s a coiled 6’, below the knee, on the strap side of your back foot. The board turns on its side and slowly comes back - its perfect. It’s knee because it makes it stay off the water. In 4 years never I have had a scare or a cut caused by having a leash, or wish I wasn’t using it. I simply will not ride without it. Thank you for reading and make your own mind up - be safe and protect others. Foil away happy 😍🏄‍♂️🙌

Great tips Mike. Efoils aren't that common so people are not really aware of how to use them safely. This is much needed information!

That was extremely helpful thanks! Can you also make a video about how to actually be safe on the e-foil? Have you hit the wing very much even with all of your experience? Thanks again for all of your E-foil videos!

Great suggestion! Yes I have been hit by the wing many times. that's why I always ride in a wetsuite. That protected me from the hit pretty well, no cuts. Being safe on efoil is just using common sense - a helmet, life vest and a leash. Real danger is when people go on a windy day without a leash and we read horror stories when someone lost the board and got stranded in the ocean. The board drifted away faster than he could swim. So the wing is not the only danger

By far most of the hard crashes come from people flying (up on the foil) before they know how to handle the board well. I crashed hundreds of times just getting up to standing, and never hit the board or foil in that time. I'm just now starting to fly standing up and I see how much easier it would be to hit the board. Higher (seems MUCH higher) and much more precarious handling up on the foil. You should spend as much time as it takes (long time for 63 y/o me) on the water learning how to crash(!!) and how to handle the waves and wakes and all the other issues that come up BEFORE you put yourself up in the air. Then the hard crashes some from learning to foil and steer on the foil and such. We have rookies (young) getting up in 10 minutes but then they want to fly and do and then crash badly (sometimes). Take the time and learn how to fall (pushing the board the other way when possible) and you'll do a whole lot better when you fly. (and fall)

Hi. Thank you very much for the video. Question: what's the safety equipment required for wakefoil or even for pump foil? (Very low speed foiling). I'm about to start these two activities and your advice will be very helpful ! Thanks in advance !

To be honest I am only into motorized foiling.. I never tried wakefoil or even for pump foil... But check Damien advice he is a pro in this matter kzbin.info

Thanks. I own the MET Parachute Helmet with face protection: I bought it for Mountain Bicycle, it’s very light (even lighter than normal bicycle helmet ) and has lot of aeration holes. I like it so much I don’t want to destroy it in salt water, so I found a CRATONI helmet, very light too, with REMOVABLE face protection, but seems to be not as tough as the MET. Your white helmet looks nice, but not much aeration holes. I ride only windsurf and Wing boards. E-foil is too expensive and probably forbidden in Switzerland and many lakes in Europe. I’m only interested in an electric power fin add-on , like BoostSurf (400US$) or jay Kay E-Fin (700€) ,who have both batteries INSIDE, but your video with 2 little motors wasn’t convincing about power. But I wish something to come back when the wind comes from the land, because it’s not easy to paddle with the Wing behind. Tell us if you find something

Its always that 1 bad crash in 100 you can't control or goes sideways that puts you into a wing, mast or board. Take hundreds of falls and those wing hits add up, cut ankles, sliced wet suits, forehead stitches.

Mike, it seems that Ocean rodeo's drywear division has transitioned to mustang survival, and they only sell to CA and US not EU. :(

Attaching the board with you leash is a great way to have the board hit you when you fall. NOT Recommended! The board is not going to sink (if it does, a leash won’t help you anyway).
@JetSurfingNation
@JetSurfingNation 2 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. Who was hurt by the coiled leash on efoil? I've never heard of a single case. However I heard of several cases people losing the board in the open sea when the strong wind and currents washed the board away and the person was stranded at sea. The coiled leash is a must use in the open ocean especially on wavy/windy day. You really don't want to lose a 35kg board with a metal axe and let it go and hurt other surfers.. As for the lake or teaching beginners - I agree leash is not necessary.

In no wind no waves conditions you can do without the leash. Otherwise a good relatively short wingfoil leash with safety-release mechanism is a must. You may fall and get exhausted try to swim after the board. That’s how people actually drown in open water sports…
@JetSurfingNation
@JetSurfingNation 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly.. Getting lost in the sea with a runaway board is much more scary

Even on smaller inland lakes when the wind is blowing well and you fall where the board scoots away from you on ejection it can be hard to catch the board with the waves and wind moving it downwind and 20" or more gap. Especially when first learning and falling a lot, I got exhausted swimming after the board first, rather than tiring of the board experience. Other than in waves it's hard to picture a scenario where the leash causes the board to hit you. It's just tether not a spring.

10ft Oceanic reel leash, hooked to an NSI leash mount on the rear corner of the board. The leash tends to angle the board away from you on a lot of crashes and can help pull the board over with the mast pointed away from you. Lots of people confirmed this on the efoil forums leash vs non-leash threads. No idea of how short leashes would react but I've taken hundreds of falls with a reel leash on the efoil and it plays out gently and the board winds up further away from me on crashes more often then when going leashless. No problems using a real leash causing a board to hit you on a fall. And I ride flat water lakes and it is very helpful and convenient.

If you have a quality board, like Fliteboard, you DO NOT need to charge the battery outside or to put the battery in a fireproof box. And do NOY charge the battery outside! If it rains, you have destroyed the battery and charger.
@JetSurfingNation
@JetSurfingNation 2 жыл бұрын
It's a common sense not to charge under rain. Unfortunately we've seen several cases of battery fires from other brands especially during charging, it's better be safe than sorry. I charge it indoors near garage door.
@Fluterra
@Fluterra 2 жыл бұрын
@@JetSurfingNation I hope you don’t charge it while it’s enclosed in a bag or box. That’s a definite no-no. The battery releases gases which need to escape or the battery can overheat.
@JetSurfingNation

oh come on :) Of course I don't charge in the box or in the rain.. The boxes and bags are supposed to be for long term storage.

NO!! More Fliteboard fanboi bs< it's nothing about Lift or Flite or any other company. Lithium Ion batteries are inherently dangerous. ALWAYS charge your batteries OUTSIDE, not hard to cover them (upside down trash can for me) ;)
