Taylor is great but I don't think people realise what Mauvaka accomplishes on the field. Run the ball more than most (if not all) hookers in the world, very accurate lineouts, often reach 15+ tackles per game, break tackles, plays backrow when needed. This guy is at the same time rapid, solid and technical like a back. I have never seen a hooker so versatile and yet very good at his core tasks. Look at his stats and the WC games, you might discover a freak of a player. I'm not even talking about what he does with Toulouse...
@kellyrobbins82552 ай бұрын
You've basically just described Codie Taylor during the Rugby Championship. And Malcolm Marx prior to his injury during the RWC last year. Both incredibly athletic, versatile hookers who are exceptional ball carriers and very real breakdown threats. That's not to say that Mauvaka isn't great - he's brilliant - I just think you're doing Codie Taylor a massive disservice if you think he can't run the ball, do the same dirty work as a backrow forward or break tackles in addition to putting in a proper defensive shift. Not all hookers are equal in the scrum either - some aren't that great - and that is another aspect of Taylor's game that is excellent. He absolutely deserves the shout for team of the year.

Mmm. Agree on Ox. For hooker, Bongi, Sheehan, Mauvaka also put in huge efforts. Probably Mauvaka by a hair for me. Tighthead I think is the most glaring. In no universe will I pick Lomax over Malherbe. The very reason Ox has been so dominant, is because of the silent grunt from Malherbe and Koch. For locks, I think Etzebeth picks himself. Tupo Vaa'i would be my second pick. For my loosies, PSDT picks himself. The number 6 jersey (yes, NUMBER SIX 😂) could go to Van der Flier or Kolisi. Can we pick Savea at 7? He has played there but not much. Eighth man wpuld be Doris over Savea, but if Jasper Wiese had veen available for the Ireland series, I think I might have been going with him. What a year from the Upington Vleispaleis. But he didn't, so Doris it is. I like lists like these but unfortunately they do kind of disqualify the bench forwards from South Africa. Koch, Marx and Kwagga coming off the bench are just incredible. Oh dear, Ive lost track. 1. Ox 2. Mauvaka 3. Malherbe 4. Etzebeth 5. Vaa'i 6. Van der Flier 7. PSDT 8. Doris

There are such good, critical views in this discussion. That is why rugby talk shows & commentating & referee decisions are so annoying; they regard viewers as not knowledgable. Best for me here is the idea of TWO (FPOTY and BPOTY) 15s PsOTY; rewarding players based on home & away performamces; rewarding outstanding players in 2nd stream teams vs top teams in rare outings (SriL & Bangl in cricket shows what regular exposure can achieve). To grow the game, more opportunities between such teams, on great stadia before big crowds, are imperative, so too access to rugby at all age group levels. Rugby is for many men and women a socio-economic liberator and life saver. All aspects of rugby, playing, coaching, refereeing, marketing, administration, fitness, on-field medical care and safety should be promoted as part of rugby opportunities.

how does sititi or savea not make this
@EggchasersRugby2 ай бұрын
Doris is nominated for WPOTY, which means no Savea (he has played 8 all year) isn't a surprise. And Sititi has been a 6 for majority of games, so he misses out to PSDT. Not sure either is controversial.

Brave Tim - or amateur Tim? You do not want to be a selector. It is so much worse than predicting the weather Thanks though really appreciate your opinion.

The disrespect to Malcolm Marx is crazy. If we are talking about the modern game, he is without question the best hooker in the world.

He doesn’t start.

@@jameswyatt4443 as mentioned, modern game is a 23 man sport. Whether he starts or not is irrelevant, it isn’t called the starting 15 dream team

We're talking about this year, where he's been average by his standards and SA lineout has failed a lot. He's not been the same quality(despite a few tries) since his injury, he used to be my no.1 hooker pick easily.
@jameswyatt44432 ай бұрын
@ Hey genius, minutes matter. And when you come off the bench, you don’t get the minutes. Marx has played half as much rugby as Taylor. Use your brain.
@randomlyfactual19432 ай бұрын
Two issues with Marx: 1) Him not starting means that he spends a lot less time on the park. If that is a criteria for selection in a dream team, then this costs him 2) He was had a less than stellar year in terms of lineouts. He is probably the best hooker at the breakdowns, but his lineout throws have cost us some.

@@PB22559makes sense right? If you want to win a big tournament that is. If you want to bottle it in a QF then increase the Irish quota.
