Jeffy dodged the punishment despite being a ring leader on the "merriment" because he complied with being told to go to bed and passing out before things went bonkers.

There is a greater than 1% chance that Robert Lee and Grant could’ve been drinking buddies at his tavern

Apparently Lee was considered to be quite the straight laced square (and he also helped use his reputation to defend his future fellow traitors for this night of drunken madness), so while there was a chance, it's not much more than that 1%.

Robert E Lee considered slavery to be one of the greatest evils perpetrated by man and freed his families slaves immediately upon inheriting them. Grant owned slaves and was upset at having to free them after the 13th amendment was passed. So maybe not drinking buddies.

@@shaitan7dddLay off the Lost Cause Myth. Lee's views on slavery were very similar to a lot of Southerners of the time. He did consider it a bad thing but that slavery was worse for white people than the it was for blacks and that the government had no place to get rid of it. Only God could and that anybody trying to end it was going against God's plan and religious liberty for abolitionists to try to end it. To directly quote a letter from Lee to his wife, Mary, in 1856(I'd link to it if KZbin cared for links), "While we see the Course of the final abolition of human slavery is onward, & we give it the aid of our prayers & all justifiable means in our power we must leave the progress as well as the result in his hands who Sees the end; who Chooses to work by slow influences ; & with whom two thousand years are but a single day. Although the abolitionist must Know this; & must see that he has neither the right or power of operating except by moral means & suasion, & if he means well to the slave, he must not create angry feelings in the master; that although he may not approve the mode by which it pleases Providence to accomplish its purposes, the result will nevertheless be the same: that the reasons he gives for interference in what he has no Concern, holds good for every Kind of interference with our neighbours when we disapprove their Conduct; Still I fear he will persevere in his evil Course. Is it not strange that the descendants of those pilgrim fathers who crossed the Atlantic to preserve their own freedom of opinion, have always proved themselves intolerant of the spiritual liberty of others."

@@shaitan7dddThe stuff about Lee is just straight wrong. He talked about how he felt slavery was awful but that it was worse for white people and that God would end it when he felt black people were ready, until then people had no place to try to end it(paraphrase of a letter he wrote to his wife, Mary, in 1856.) He also inheirited many slaves from his father-in-law and only freed them in 1862, 5 years into owning those particular slaves(he had owned others prior), because the state of Virginia forced him to honor his father-in-law's will to free them within 5 years of his death. As for the stuff about Grant, the only thing accurate about that was that he owned a slave at one point. He inherited William Jones from his pro-slavery in-laws like Lee but treated him so well(like a friend rather than a slave) that it actually made the slaveowners around him angry. The stuff about him being angry that he had to free him is complete nonsense as Jones had already been freed. In the tumult of the 1850s, he had gradually become anti-slavery and had signed Jones's manummision in 1859. By the time that the 13th Amendment was formally proposed in April of 1865, Grant had been made a strong abolitionist by the war and was a vocal supporter of the 13A. Grant followed the same path on slavery as a lot of his fellow Northerners.

15:49 I was on the cadets' side...at first. But this is ridiculous. The "Father of West Point" and these two officers are literally just trying to keep things orderly.

A half dozen enlisted + 2 gallons of Korean soju + the newly released Rainbow Six on the Dreamcast = It took us 8 hours to successfully do a drunken six man SWAT stack up a Switchback flight of stairs to the second floor of the barracks. On average we ended up blacking out and losing 10 - 14 days of our life before coming back to and realizing we have been coasting on autopilot the whole time. Good Times

Jefferson Davis suffered from headaches his whole life that were reportedly so bad that he would lose the use of his entire right side in particularly bad episodes. Might be why he drank?

Or is it related to drinking dangerous amounts of moonshine? Not to discredit the idea of self medicating in a time before proper understanding and safe treatment, but I'm inclined to take a harsh read on this man.

I was usually the sober guy herding the drunk/high friends. Deposited my share of passed out people onto couches and recliners. Made snack & food runs to keep people from driving. Also to help reduce hangovers.

4:55 No danger of guys swimming across either. At its narrowest point, the mouth of the river itself, the Hudson is still roughly 3/4 of a mile wide. At its widest, it is 3 miles wide. Most people can't swim that one-way, let alone do a return trip.

Idk. I know for a fact that there have been people who swam across the Long Island Sound. Which is 15 miles… like good lord, I can barely swim a quarter mile without needing a break.

🤣so many memories of West Point from seeing a cadet drop his rifle off a cliff and hearing it hit all the rocks and bending the gun barrel and shatter the buttstock to doing a night raid to test if the cadets were setting up camps at night in the field with guards they did not even have a fire watch up so we just went in and secured all the guns we could find and waited with the cadre and set off a "party favor" to teach them why you have guards at night😱👻💩😏

Top drunk story? Funny you mentioned Hard Rock Cafe.... Went for Friday after work drinks with my colleagues at the Hard Rock Cafe in London and woke up/sobered up/became aware of reality on Sunday afternoon ... in Porto, Portugal. Don't ask me how and when myself and my mate got on a plane or what happened but apparently it was a great weekend (based on what all of our new friends in the bars of Porto told us.)

thats completely different from europe. there you would have a hard time getting justification because drinking is part of daily culture. not drinking after work pretty much equals social isolation. that certainly causes consequential issues in regards to health and safety, of course.

I always find it amusing how people think others turn into assholes when they drink. No, they were already assholes - the alcohol just prevented them from controlling their actions as thoroughly. Great video OMR.

For me I really don't drink outside of like social events and I'm a Marine reservist we had just gotten back from our 2 weeks and we're having the Warriors tonight for those who don't know what that is a little congratulation saying pretty much saying hey do you guys did good stuff like that Command had bought beer for that and so since we were still technically on duty the CO looked at everyone and said "now Gents remember only two beers" mind you we had a Doc who was a chief it's been with the unit I want to say 10+ years so we were having drinks to him congratsing him on his time in service and stuff like that and him getting out sort of stuff I go in to our little Gym area we have on base because it's getting a little too loud in the room and everything so I beat up KZbin watch a few videos. Like half an hour later I go to see if we have any more beers or if anyone needs help putting stuff up in finding out sleeping Arrangements because we weren't allowed to leave that night one because we were still scheduled for the next day and two because we were drinking, but anyways I go out into our parking lot and I see I just complete Gaggle f*** of Marines and among them I see not only the first sergeant but also the CO which if anyone understands what that means the CO's drinking with the guys and the lower enlisted which means it's no longer "just two beers". which relates to everyone breaking out the bottle of crown the bottle of jack the 2 L of Coke everything we have eventually it gets to like 11:30 midnight area time and some people are starting to lay down to get some sleep some people still drinking me being one of them however we find out all the booze is gone which results in I'm sending out task forces around the base trying to find more. Eventually I looked in one of the garages that we store stuff in and I find a yellow box with some Mexican words on it (I don't remember the brand of hand) but I pull one out I look at the thing and I see hard seltzer immediately my reaction is f*** this s*** it's going to taste like ass I've had white give it a try and to my surprise it wasn't that bad I've been running around start handing them out to the boys who are still up in drinking. 15 minutes half an hour pass by I'm not really sure and I hear someone yelling "Layton. Layton! LAYTON, YOU DUMBASS WHERE THE F*** ARE YOU!!!" To which I drunkenly Stumble over to them and ask what they need me for and in that moment I sobered up completely and started signing my own f****** will because they said that the base First Sergeant was looking for me because the alcohol I had taken and started passing out and drinking was his. I go up to him immediately go to Ates and start answering his questions he asked me did I know it was his why did I take it stuff like that my answers were simple I didn't know it was his and I had no excuse for taking it to which cracked a smile and then started to burst out into laughter and looked at me and said "Layton chill the f*** out man you're not in trouble if anything I'm actually afraid of you so just go your good" or something like that. And that was the night I found out that my base's first sergeant is somewhat afraid of me or so he says
