As you munch on guacamole and chips, chew on the etymology of the humble avocado. Its many names are as wacky as the fruit is yummy. Guacamole is in the news because a study links the beloved dip to many cases of food poisoning. The reason? Raw ingredients that may not be washed properly or adequately refrigerated. Just be cautious. This news doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm; rather it creates a reason to discuss the provocative nomenclature of the bumpy-shelled fruit. A biologist calls it persea americana, but avocado derives from the Nahuatl word ahuacatl, which also refers to a certain part of the male anatomy that the fruit somewhat resembles. In English, the word has almost the same pronunciation as the Spanish abogado, “lawyer.” In Mexico it is called the aguacate. Use your imagination to understand why the Aztecs called it the fertility fruit. Legend has it that an early English description of “avocado” called it the “avogado pear,” leading to the misunderstanding of “alligator pear.” The fact that the shell of the fruit looks vaguely crocodilian doesn’t hurt. In South America, some call it la manzana del invierno, “the apple of the winter.” But if you happen to be in North America, mash one up with some herbs and lime, perhaps you would call it ahuacamolli, ahuaca “avocado” and molli “sauce.” Hence, guacamole. Special thanks to: blog.dictionary.com/avocado/

Its funny how some people are correcting Ras in the comments and stating that what this brother calls as an pear is really called an avocado. Well one question , how do you know which is correct and which is incorrect. Just because where you grew up pronouces it one way doesnt mean it originated and spoken or said that way (meaning your way) is correct.. Many times, if something is unfamilar to us ,we sometimes like to say that the unfamiliar way is incorrect and our way is correct, when in turn we could be the ones with mis-knowledge and the other person is correct... just saying...

SaloneDutchess sierra leone and jamaica got so much in common.even the languages are similar.for example, dung dey,me dey ya,fallah all are the same between the two.☺.during the slavery days they took alot of sierra leone slaves from sierra leone and brought them to jamaica so basically they brought the african sierra leone culture and some languages with them.its alot of lost ancestors between sierra leone and jamaica indeed.of course most of the west african countries such as liberia and ghana got alot relations to jamaica n carribeans too.

When chickens are free Range they do what Chickens do, which is eat every thing they can find no matter how disgusting. Use your imagination. The eggs end up tasting like gamey nastiness. Farmed chickens are raised on a steady and consistent diet of corn and Grain. an optimal chicken diet which makes much cleaner tasting egg....if you've ever eaten free range eggs they taste almost like normal eggs half spoiled
