Remarkable that it was Nixon who started (or was a big proponent of) the "us vs them" mentality that seems to be so prevalent today in politics. (13:02)
@claumeister1
@claumeister1 Жыл бұрын
Yes, and it’s instructive (IMO) that Nixon’s mentality stemmed from his own personal insecurities. Have you noticed how people (of all stripes) seem so fragile today ? How saying anything deemed “offensive” is treated like an actual crime (by the left), or some kind of religious persecution (by the right) ? Children tend to react to mere words as if they are a form of assault; now, so called “grownups” react the same way.

Nixon had a chip on his shoulder after losing to Kennedy. He took on an unhealthy "us vs. them" mentality.

@@marksacher3866 Well, “dirty tricks” and “hurling insults” has always took place, in politics. It seems that the 1960s, it took on a new dimension, and we have been going downhill since. It seems that candidates are in a race to the bottom. “The one who dies with the most toys, ‘WINS!’”

@@Chris-tn6vb That’s really interesting. In 1974, I moved to Washington DC and went to work for my Congressman, Pete McCloskey. I worked for him for a year, and during that time, Bud was hired by Pete, so I initially met him there. But after a year in DC, I missed California enormously and briefly moved back in with my parents in San Jose (at that time, still Prune Capital of the World), but soon thereafter moved to San Francisco. Bud also moved to San Francisco around that same time, and he let me know that there was a secretarial position working for the VP of Sales at Swensen’s Ice Cream, so that was my first SF job, and I got to know Bud for the great guy that he was. We stayed in touch for many, many years, finally losing touch after he and his new wife (Lauralee?) settled up in Seattle.

Amazing to see this and know in retrospect what actually happened. But I am struck by the casual way they discuss his crimes especially with the kids. "Gee, isn't it nice Daddy only has to serve six months for a Federal crime , Billy!? Now do your chores or you are going to be in big trouble!" Aww, the warm blanket of elite white, rich privilege.
@peterbkrogh
@peterbkrogh Жыл бұрын
My name's not Billy, Sean. And you have no idea what the conversations were like between me and my parents about what was going on. You just saw what they told Mike Wallace. There was nothing remotely casual about it. I had found a clipping of an article on my mom's desk that said my dad could be sent away for 10+ years. I was 8 at the time and this was terrifying. When he called me to say it would only be 6 months, I sobbed. He did me a solid by saying that I had just said, "yeah, that's great." Because he was that kind of guy. I did my chores because I understood the value in them, not because my mother threatened me with trouble. I was never threatened at home. I was raised. While I acknowledge the white privilege that has helped me my whole life, that doesn't change the fact that 2 years later I was living with my mom and little brother in southern Oregon, well under the poverty level. Or that the "meanness on the part of a few children" ended up resulting in brutal fist fights for which I wasn't prepared.

@@peterbkrogh Assuming you are who you say you are, a cursory look at your channel neither confirms nor denies it, I will proceed with my comment. I am grateful for this response because it actually affirms what I was alluding to. The off hand way in which your father portrayed a serious matter as if it were just a trivial one. That did a disservice to you and everyone involved including the audience and Wallace. It gives a glimpse, in my mind, of the kind of man he really was, a not very good one in my opinion. Looking more at his bio cements it for me. My comment had little to do with you and everything to do with him. Hence the name "Billy" as a stand in for any of his children to whom he had to explain his crimes and then hypocritically have to be be a parental figure. Worst of all was the trivializing of it all and it's true impact all around. The white privileged that allowed this and he enjoyed was his alone, not yours. And like true white, rich male, elite privilege he suffered little for his crimes and even capitalized on them while you, as you say, suffered. So, you make my point for me. I actually realized that it was a devastating event for you, his wife, the Nation. We all suffered for what he did, what he was involved in and still suffer to this day. The Nixon administration heralded in a new era of modern politics based on grievances and getting revenge. It might seem that I am too harsh on the cogs instead of the machine itself but the political machine can't operate without them. It's the people who prop up the Dictator who are as bad as the Dictator. Sorry for your situation, I see you like cycling as I do (Hellyer Velodrome is near where I grew up cycling). We were both bullied in school except for different reasons and we might even have been friends in a different world. Good luck and thank you for the response.
