Your comment about the busy single professional is spot on. That's me, and that's exactly why I bought this mower in 2016. No more fixing mowers before cutting the grass or smelling like gas and exhaust for hours. If you fall in this category, this mower is perfect

After watching this review I picked up an EGO 56V self-propelled mower. 6 months of mowing Florida St.Augustine and massive weeds and I really like it. It mulches well, has lots of run time, and stores easy. It’s also very quiet. However, the mower is very light which causes the front to bounce over uneven terrain. So you do have to adjust your mowing style a bit like LCN said in the video to get a good cut.

Very informative. I really appreciate you sharing how to make this mower cut more consistently. The inconsistent cut has been very frustrating to me while using this mower. The only thing negative about this video is that it took you 4 minutes (6:50 to 10:50) to share that all you have to do is pull up on the handle to make it cut better. That really pissed me off when watching this video. Keep it simple man. Thanks again for sharing.

I recent new home owner. I’ve been watch your videos since I purchased. My lawn is my first project and your videos have guided me through repairing it. Though I get confused because there’s so many products out there I find myself in my local garden shop, pondering what type of product to purchase. Like I said a newly home owner wanting my lawn to be loved. I appreciate your videos!! Hopefully next season I’ll have grass soGREEN! Thanks for the HD VIDEOS as well! :)

Your conclusion makes perfect sense. The Time Master must have a 50-60 weight advantage over the EGO? Leaning on that mower probably makes no difference at all. Like you said, we must adapt to the quirks of each machine we use. Great vid. Still not buying a electric, but great vid and topic. I always love to learn.

Have you seen the newer model it is a duel blade system works good, take it from a retired commercial gardener but you are correct if you are getting up in age have about seven to five thousand square foot lawn and don’t want to hassle with gas this is the way to go I had a large grass area home that had a pretty steep hill and the EGO 21 select flew up it. sold the house moving to Texas will be purchasing the the whole line from EGO, will also be looking to go organic, looking forward to purchasing your products and giving you some feed back. I am the garden department manager at a hardware store and I am learning a lot about the benefits of the micro nutrients for the soil. So thanks again for all you fair and honest reviews

I was also thinking it was a mower weight issue, not enough to keep the mower body always on the ground. Maybe gorilla glue a cinderblock to the front of the mower?

so did the high blade make any difference or just the way you lifted up on the handle during the mow??

Hey LCN, great 2-part review of the EGO. I think you hit the nail on the head ... weight. Two things ... even with a set height of 4", the lighter EGO will probably float a little bit compared to a much heavier gas mower. No problem, adjust down a little. Related with the front of the mower bouncing up a little - I don't think you need to be an 'active' mower, but relates a lot to the self-propelled speed. If you have the mower speed slightly faster than you walk ... it will pull you along a little and your drag will pop the front of the mower up every so slightly. Just slow the mower speed a little bit (or walk faster :o) then you will be "in-sync" and get that great cut you're looking for.

If the handle length is infinitely adjustable, move it back to the high angle setting (which we know is too high) but then shorten the length to bring the handle back down to a comfortable hight. This will put you more on top of the mower and shorten the lever. You might then be able to rest your hands and mow normally with better results.

I live on a small plot, about 2500 square feet of lawn. I picked up the Ego self propelled recently and it's fantastic. I just did my first late evening mow on a weeknight last week. 9PM, the light was fading, but I was able to get the mowing done without bothering the neighbors and the headlights made up for the low light. I do hope to add the string trimmer/stick edger combo kit to my arsonal soon as I currently don't have a string trimmer or edger. My lawn looks as bad as you are probably imagining because if it, but that is all charging this summer. I've been a lazy landscaper for two long and I'm ready to dominate.

Hey Team. I have off topic lawn question. I put sod down on 4/5 this year in Dallas area. Followed watering rules. Threw down Milo! About 2 weeks back I saw some parts not filling in. I put down topsoil and gave extra water but it isn’t filling in. Just small growth...while the rest is vigorous. Any help appreciated.

Spot on as usual LCN. I bought the Ego 20" steel deck 3 months ago. Waited to mow here in chi-town. Worst cutting mower. Too lite on front end and No Suction. Grass looked mashed. No high lift blade for 20" in USA, yet. 50 bucks n UK. I returned it to depot with 3 days to spare with edger, blower, n trimmer. Search for new system continues.

Got this mower for my 90 yr old nana works great for her needs gonna have to check that blade out. I like the mower the quietness and bright headlights are nice factors as well as the power it has. Not sure if u have mentioned this but the mower has different rpm levels that it automatically engages when the lawn is longer or thicker. Great vid . Cheers

How about trying the EGO with the front wheels 1 notch lower than the rear? I know with my 60” and 72” finish mowing decks and when I use Gator G6 mulching blades it makes a big difference in cut and mulching quality when the front is 1/4” - 3/8” lower than the rear blade tips.

Part of it is you're holding the mower back if you are not walking fast enough. That causes the front of the mower to rise as the mower tries to run away from you. Slow down the self-propelled speed or don't use it all. I choose the self-propelled version 3 years ago for the larger battery and faster charger so I've got a few hours pushing it around. I never intended to use the self-propelled feature. I have not used the high lift blade but I don't use the bag so didn't see the need. But maybe I will give it a try when I need a new blade.

My dad had a similar issue, but I found out that he was going to fast. Slowed the self propelled down to its lowest speed setting and completely perfect cuts.

Yup, works best on the slowest speed setting.
@Gixer750pilot
@Gixer750pilot 6 жыл бұрын
That suggest it just does not have enough torque to maintain a consistent RPM when walking faster due to cutting more grass per rotation. This is where petrol wins
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree, its the bouncing of the machine thats causing the cut issues, walking slower corrects this issue. Place a heavy Brick or a weight on the front of the machine. Or place the bag on the back of the mower even while mulching will add to the weight of the lawn mower.
@Gixer750pilot
@Gixer750pilot 6 жыл бұрын
HD MOVIE SOURCE $500 then you need to add a brick ??? Sounds like a bum deal to me . It’s just not suited to St. Aug grass that’s it . If it can’t cut at it’s full pace then it’s just hit up to the job with this particular grass
@hdmoviesource
@hdmoviesource 6 жыл бұрын
Well, if you have uneven grass or like The Lawn Care Nut, he wasn't cutting his grass correctly with one hand, and in my opinion too fast, then you may have issues. I put no pressure on the handle, I let the Ego drive itself, and the cuts are much cleaner when you go slow, and I have very uneven soil, and I have clean cuts all the way down the line. We all have bad habits and those habits may make this a bad mower for you. For me personally the mower is great, and great for the environment so Im personally happy with the Ego.

Incredible sequel to video 1. So I bought this Mower and have mowed twice with it. I am very unhappy with the cut just as you were. I also own the entire line; hedge- trimmer, weed eater and blower. I love them all. That is why I ended up getting the mower. I am now at the point of returning it to home Depot, as I have 90 days, for a Honda twin blade self Propeled mower to get a good clean cut. however I will try your results from video 2 to see if this corrects my problem. my first 2 mows I used it with the mower handle at the lowest setting. Being 6'-2", that just seemed comfortable to me. did not like holding it up high. I do love the mower and the fact that I don't have to use gas any longer but ultimately I need a good clean cut. living in West Central Florida and having the same grass as you. However my issue is spending $500 plus another 25 for another blade you should not have these issues of cutting the grass it should be a nice clean-cut, so I still have reservations about the mower only.

Great review. After watching your first video and buying one myself I realized that the reason you had a bad cut was the front weight only because I realized it right out of the box and frankly didn't like that light front end. I'm no lawn nut, but all I did was raise the handle up a setting and boom back to lazy mowing. Having the force coming down from a higher position caused the front end to stay put. This thing cuts circles around my gas husq and the cut is so much cleaner than my husq.

Allyn, I think that this plays into my previous comment more with only using the self propel in uphill areas. Pushing this mower yields a much better result in cut quality since I'm actively forcing the front wheels down by pushing the mower manually. Great observation. After watching your previous video, I did pay more attention to my mowing habits and things that I sort of "just do" after becoming comfortable with this mower. I realized now that I engage the self propel to get the mower up to speed and then just push it the majority of the time until I feel stressed by the incline. It's become a natural habit like riding a bike. There are uphill sections of my lawn that I still push because it's not uncomfortable. This mower is so light that pushing isn't a problem at all. (plus the extra calories burnt can't be that bad, right?)

Curious to know what the RPM of that mower is? Most gas mowers are at the 3,000-3,200 RPM range. Also, I wonder if that mower has enough amperage to keep up with the demand of thick lawn blades like St. Augustine.

Nice review and follow-up. My next mower will be battery. I think some of the problem is your grass type, I bet the Ego mower, as light as it is, would work better on a bermuda lawn or softer grasses since a thick st augustine lawn has some push back to it.

I have had my Ego now for over a year and really would not trade it for anything for my 5k yard. I had the Honda and several other models over the years but always hated the maintenance, gas, and other hassles. Your video did provide me some tips such as the high lift blade and the handle setting. Great job! As for humid acids, I have sold and worked around them for over 12 years. I have worked with a 70% active dry product and the 12% liquid product. I prefer the dry over the liquid as it has more active and seems to last longer versus having to apply it more. Also, I don’t care to buy a liquid applicator and can use my fertilizer spreader without the extra hassle and cost. On my last application (12 days ago) I used Hydra-Hume 0-0-1 plus used Dr. Earth’s Super Lawn Fertilizer. The lawn TTTF really responded within a week and evened out better. I like the Dr. Earth product because it is a dry formulation, organic, has good “bugs” in it for a soil that I figured was rather dead after our house was built. It is expensive but to my conditions well worth it. I used Milo the first of April but just didn’t see the total response. It could have been the cooler temps. I am going to do do a trial in June with Dr. Earth, Milo, and Ringers to see if I get a visual response. I would use your liquid product but having to buy 5 gallons for 5k yard seems a bit excessive. I have no doubt your product is a great product! I have worked in ag all my life and really enjoy taking my lawn to new heights. Keep up the great work.

As someone who recently moved to the whole Ego line, I can't see going back to gas. The convenience for a smaller sized yard is just so nice. I did the whole batch, 7.5amp mower kit, backpack blower, multihead with trimmer, edger, and chainsaw, and the new model hedge trimmer. So nice, 1 battery can pretty much do my whole yard as I swap tools, but I have 1 7.5amp, and 2 5amp batteries based on the bundles. Didn't know how far the battery would go and the batteries are cheapest as part of a bundle. I too have the weighted issue, but it's a small trade off. I will say, and this might make for a version 2 review in the future for you if you sell off this Ego, there's a steel deck version of the mower. Perhaps that would eliminate your weighted issues. Also is it necessary to sharpen a new blade like that?

Hey, lawn care nut, got a question. I live in southern California, and got St. Augustine grass as well, however, in our front lawn we have a bad case of thatch, which causes the lawn to be above the sidewalk level, and look really thick and big even when cut extremely short. I want to cut it at a healthy 2-1/2 inches but my dad wants it way shorter, because he says he wants to cut the lawn back down to the the sidewalk level. I recommend to use a detaching machine but my dad says that's way too much money. So what do I do? Cut the grass extremely short, or keep it a little taller, and as my dad says, contribute to the current thatch problem?

This might explain why my non-propelled EGO cuts fine. I modified the handle to not extend out as far and I'm six foot so I have it at a higher angle or "rake". Combined with it not being self-propelled and me having to push it forward maybe that's why mine cuts great.

Answer: St Augustine is like a springy mattress. St. Augustine grass is beautiful, dense, and looks GREAT when cut fresh... especially with a fresh edge. But, St.Aug is probably just too dense for really lightweight mowers. That Ego probably does a fantastic job on cool season turf. I wouldn't advise anyone to weigh the Ego down with additional weight, it's not made to push or carry extra weight.

Realize you probably wont see this... but you mentioned you have torpedo grass in your lawn before. What did you do to remedy? quinclorac? It's invading my lawn and i gotta get this sucker out! I live in St. Pete so you know the struggle but man its crazy, roundup barely kills it

Hey buddy, to help film your videos get a articulating arm with a clamp on one side and a 1/4 20 bolt on the other. Then you can use the mount on anything about 3 inch or less in diameter. And the GoPro mount has a hole you can screw it down to it. Bam, good smooth footage and a two handed mow.

we have whistle pigs here in ID and I would love to know how to keep your lawn nice and flat. The buggers dig holes every where ugh and what does high lift blade do?

At the beginning of the video, I thought the only reason why you would get different heights would be because there is movement... so you're either moving it up and down in some way, or the blade was wobbly... and basically because these things are purposely light weight to allow less power to be used, it means you can easily move it around, too easily. I wonder if sticking some weights on the front would make a difference.

I have the regular blade and am in my second season with the mower. A few things i have noticed is that i agree you need to be pushing upwards while mowing. Also, going at a slower speed, when you go faster it tends to bounce. I always use the bag because i only cut once a week, and that adds even more weight to the back, the mulching works so good the bag gets compacted completely and becomes very heavy. So either cut without the bag, or empty often because that will also make the front wheels pop up. I also follow the lines with the space between the grey front part of the mower, and the wheel. Its hard to remember to always push up on the handle, but honestly a regular mower is so hard for me to use, that a slightly uneven cut is still worth it in my opinion. And no maintenance.

EGO recommends that you mow only 1/3 of the blade length at a time. This, plus the recommendations given in this video will assure the cleanest cut. I have found that my EGO mower works best with Kentucky Bluegrass and rye blends ( Marathon ), but is not so great on St. Augustine. But, hey, Allen! You made no comment about the performance of the high-lift blade vs. the standard EGO blade. Wasn't that the purpose of the video?

Al, I have two questions in which I really hope you answer me. I have overdosed on your videos lol and went and bought the starter fertilizer and milorganite in which I have already spread on lawn. I used two bags of starter fertilizer and 5 bags of milo and I ordered ringer and just came in today and in 5 weeks time I will be putting ringer down and then continue with milo every 5 weeks. I have always bagged and never mulched which is probably why my yard is in bad shape. So now that you made me a believer I had better mulch and you showed me the importance of it I need to know do I wait till most of the weeds are gone to start mulching or will it not hurt it? I am more concerned with putting weed seeds back in my lawn which I definitely do not want. Well darn now I can't remember my other question so if you answer this one I hope I get a second chance when I do remember that you will answer that one too. Thanks Al ! I am so glad I bumped into your channel and I absolutely subscribed! I have learned a lot thanks!

I'm in South Texas and I have used this mower for three full seasons on over 1 acre of lawn between 2 houses and it was fine with St. Augustine until the 3 year warranty ran out on the battery. It would mow a full hour every time until the end. My battery died at the three year mark so it worked like they said it would. They want $350 for a replacement battery which makes the cost of this mower unrealistic to me. It really does require that you stay "active" when mowing like Alan says to get it to not hop around on you. The cut quality was acceptable to me though and I had the stock blade on there.

Sounds like the speed setting might need to be around 50% so it isn’t pulling - but almost you pushing (up slightly)??
