My first races in GB 1973
My very first league race was not in England but in Scotland in Glasgow for the Coatbridge Tigers. A woman called me and spoke in perfect German. Mr. Müller, you became German speedway champion this year. We would like to have her as a league racer for the Coatbridge Tigers. You would be the right person. They are daring, incredibly fast and also good looking. We would have loved to invite you to a race and sign a league rider. Well, now you have to know that my English was absolutely bad. When I was in school in the 1950s, I had the choice of learning English or going home. Of course, I decided to go home, also because at the age of 11 I had my own moped, which I had hidden in a parking lot just before school, and I was looking forward to sitting there as quickly as possible can. It was worth more to me than learning English. Back then I had no idea how useful it could be to be able to speak English.
Fortunately, this young woman who called explained to me in German how I could get to Glasgow. I had never flown an airplane before. She explained to me that I had to go to the Hamburg airport and pick up my tickets at the Lufthansa counter there. I would fly with them to London Heathrow and pay attention to the signs posted in the flight hall that indicated the flight and gate to get to Glasgow.
I did everything that way and then arrived in London and boarded the plane to Glasgow. I flew for a while, read a little in the newspaper, peeked a little out of the window, and barely noticed how time was passing. After about 1 hours the plane was on the approach and as is still the case today on airplanes, people started to get their bags out of the compartments and everyone wanted to get out of the plane first. Infected by this spirit of optimism, I imitated everyone. I then sat in the waiting area of ​​the airfield and waited to be picked up because I had been promised that. It was known how I looked, when I would land and at which gate I would wait. Everything else was already regulated. They wanted to drive me to the hotel.
So now I was sitting at the airport and, if I remember correctly, waited for 1 or 2 hours, but none came. It must have looked a bit strange. I sat there with my favorite crocodile leather shoes like "Garry Glitter" which had a platform sole and high heels. Everyone looked at me furtively until a woman came and asked me if she could help me in any way. Anyway, she said "can I help you anyway" and this "help", I knew that from the Beatles. There was a song with "help", and I knew that meant helping. "Oh yes, help," I stammered, and then I explained with my hands and feet that someone should pick me up here in Glasgow. Then she said: "Sorry, you are not in Glasgow, you ́r in Newcastle."
Since I had actually got off the plane in Newcastle, which had only landed between. That's how it is when mine doesn't speak English.
