EGR is killing my Discovery 3 - here's the fix for my LR3

I work for a independan Land Rover specialist and this modification would fail an MOT test as it has been obviouslt midified. We would advise fitting the blanking plates but leaving the pipes in place so its not so obviously modified.

I don't know but in Germany it is a 500 euro fine if egr blocked off so if it comes here your in for trouble, I expect it will?

I just did full replacement of EGR valves cost £45 per side (after market ), bit fiddly but if you take your time it can be done. Codes all cleared by themselves and no worries re-MOT. I wouldn’t risk the blanking plates, my MOT station would check. Mine is running like a dream now and all legal. I have a flexible torque drive extension adapter for my small socket set, makes the job very much easier don’t know where I got it just one of those tools that turned up somewhere in my foraging for tools. To de-gas the air con just press the valve (high pressure) side with screwdriver keep your head out of the way? Big advantage of my way is you can clean the old ones at your leisure for future fitting, one of my valves heads had actually broken away!

Emissions control causes so many headaches. The Co. that makes that delete should adapt some kind of camouflage to keep those a hole inspectors none the wiser. With a reflash and a few decent miles before inspection,,, test PASSED. Yeehaw!

I wish Land Rover imported the diesel into the States. It simply makes so much sense to make adequate power with great fuel mileage on such an amazing vehicle.

IIRC, pre 2007 models can be ‘Penney’d’, but inserting a 1 penny piece in the 2 pipes where they join the exhaust on each side of the engine. This in effect simply blocks off the EGR without having to remove any pipes or make alterations to the throttle body. Also, pre 2007 models won’t need a remap. This improves performance, fuel economy and prolongs the life of the engine.

I thought it was 2p piece - I used a cheap blanking plate instead. I also removed the butterfly valve. Worked fine.

How did you clean the intake manifold? They can't be removed easily and keen to get all that black stuff out without risking anything going down the intake.

Having ripped out all these superfluous parts and disposed of them ,will this vehicle now pass MOT ? It seems odd that Land Rover bothered to fit all these parts if they are not doing anything?

They are doing something but the side effects are sluge and smoke, should pass the MOT just fine.

Must confess Also blanked mine but left the EGR pipes in situ, put the blanks at the engine block end between the EGR pipes so can’t be seen , along with removing the butterfly inside the throttle body , with the engine cover on it looks like the egrs haven’t been touched , have heard a few people failing there MOT if the pipes are missing, mines passed its mot’s for the last 4 x years since blanking them this way , mines also a pre 2007 so the software patch isn’t required , at the same time very carefully cleaned my Map and Maf sensors

They're significantly reducing NOx emissions, which they have to do to be able to sell the car. NOx isn't tested in the exhaust during an MOT emissions test, though, so even though the car is putting out way more it can still pass the MOT emission test. Whether the tester notices that it's been modified is a different question. NOx is what the whole VW emissions scandal was about, so while I'm not making any comment either way on whether people should/shouldn't blank off EGR, anyone who does has no right to complain about the VW emissions thing, in my opinion!! Pretty sure that having no EGR will make for WAY more NOx emissions than a VW with the test detecting map.

Is there any ECU reprogramming necessary? or software update...etc? I idid it , here;before i had a intermittent power issue,so i thought it was the egr and i blanked it; but the problem still continues...😒😒

Can you specify what is PRE and POST 2007? Mine is first registered 11/07 but MY08. And can it be blanked with leaving everything in? Due to MOT.

I think yours would be the same as mine. So you are most likely going to need a remap.

@@LRLiveUK What does a remap comprise? Is it something you would have to visit a dealer to get done? Couldn't the multiplug be tripped somehow? Mine is a Jaguar XF 2009 with the same engine.

Given that on many vehicles you can’t see the egrs and it’s all covered anyway. As long as you are not blowing smoke. You just may get away with it for your MOT.

I use red x 1 shot and it gets rid of all the nasty stuff and leaves the pipes clean use it once a year

While the RedX dose its stuff, does it create a cloud of black smoke as all the released sh!te goes through the engine?

I think the aim is to avoid the difficult and expensive job of full EGR replacement. I personally wouldn’t risk it, just replaced mine with after market EGR valves cost £45 per side. My MOT station guy warned me last time, “we check they haven’t been blanked”, forewarned is forearmed!

Hello from Turkey. I just bought it from Ali Express for my 2008 sport vehicle. Is software needed? Do I need to cut and cancel the butterfly? Does the Aegean cancellation benefit fuel and power? Finally, I read it in a few places. They say that the temperature of the engine increases and is harmful, is it true?

Post 2007 and you will need software, you do need to cancel the butterfly. No noticable change in power or economy. More responsive though. Engine temperature is the samne.

Not entirely sure but think it's to prevent recirculation when the engine is cold with the EGR fitted. So might stay closed with the egr removed.

Would be worth taking the op section of the pipes off and putting the longer sections back. Come MOT time, it’s not so obvious they’ve been blanked then (it’s a failure otherwise).

Not allowed to remove engine covers at MOT to check if it's been removed.

Testers can remove covers as long as it doesn't require any tools.

Hammy - you can see the pipes clearly with the engine cover in place. If they’re not there, they’ve been removed. You can leave the pipes in and still blank the egr. It’s a cheat but works.

It's a combo of snap on and Teng. Pretty happy with them. The teng ratchet always switches over when you don't want it to?

Surely when you have the ECU remapped you can disable the butterfly ? It would save having to damage the throttle body. I'm about to do this mod.......So sick of EGR faults coming up on my D3 and my wifes Pajero and the life of my engines being shortened just to appease the environment police.

Not legal but if blanked leaving everything as is such that the modification is not obvious, plus also deleting in software, it will pass MOT. Other emissions control is DPF and removing it is a big no-no.

Luckily the D3 didn't come with a DPF - only the 3.0 engine I think.

I don't think I've watched a video of work on a TDV6 before and it's good to see that there are simple jobs, it scares me bit. Also your opening section makes me want a vehicle I can camp in/on but I'd be looking at a tidy L322 if I was in the market, is sleeping in one of those a bit abusive for such a nice vehicle? Not a roof tent fan.
