(Nijlganzen) Egyptian Geese are very pugnacious and aggressive, especially during breeding season. They are intolerant of other birds including individuals of their own kind and are among the most vicious of all waterfowl.
This 63-73 cm long species breeds widely in Africa except in deserts and dense forests, and is locally abundant. They are found mostly in the Nile Valley and south of the Sahara.
It has also been introduced elsewhere: the Netherlands, Great Britain and Germany.
This is a largely terrestrial species although it swims well.
Egyptian geese were considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians, and appeared in much of their artwork.
The Egyptian Goose is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
----- NIJLGANZEN ------------------------
Tegenwoordig broeden jaarlijks bijna 5.000 broedparen in Nederland.

Beautiful footage! It's worth noting that in ancient Egypt the goose & duck were revered as very romantic (the way we think of bunny rabbits) The Egyptians kept figures of them in their bed chambers to aid in fertility

We've got a few here in the UK...introduced back in the 18th century, apparently. I don't often see them but saw a pair yesterday, sharing a roosting field with a large number of swans and Canada geese. I suppose being the smallest birds there, they were on their best behaviour!

Yeah, they're pretty rough. Still, they are the only waterfowl i have met that i can hand-feed. They even let me near their chicks, feed them and everything. Otherwise they will attack or run away from any other living thing. I wonder if they mellow out once they establish themselves somewhere. They seem pretty chill in the English parks, feeding along side ducks, geese, and even their own kind.

They're awesome! I can handfeed them too and be close to their goslings. Great that they allow friendly humans to enter their territory. They're very intelligent, very social, super friendly, lovable, cute, hilarious, interesting, addictive.... Ancient Egypts considered cats and egyptian geese holy, I know why! They're super birds all around!

@@shairaptor1865 I enjoy them, but i'm not going to pretend they are lovable. The male kills every duckling it can get it's beak on and the female chases anything that comes in her view. The family knows i have food, they want it so they tolerate me. They aren't really playful, they see how much food they can get out of me, then they split. I'm ok with that because it like being near them.

I have different experiences. I'm around an Egyptian Goose pair for years, and they even let me touch their goslings every new batch every year. I handfeed them, but even when I run out of food, they don't split. I can be very close (nose to beak) to Mrs Goose, watching her preening for half an hour. Then she falls asleep tucking her beak into her back feathers, then I bicycle away. I love these guys to bits. Sure they shoo away the ducks, but it's in their genes; they're from african Nile, where water and food is scarce, so they make sure they get their food, even in Europe. Anyway I love them to bits. @@MegaRudeBoy69
