Wepwawet is an ancient Egyptian deity whose name is translated to "Opener of the Ways." Initially revered as a god of war and funerary practices, He is frequently depicted as a wolf or a man with the head of a wolf, although at times He is also represented as a jackal. Commonly, He is portrayed holding a staff and an ankh, symbols of authority and life.
His worship was primarily centered in Asyut, known to the Greeks as Lycopolis, or the "City of the Wolves." However, over time, veneration of Wepwawet spread to other regions of Egypt.
Wepwawet's principal role in Egyptian mythology was to "open the way" for kings in battle and for the deceased as they journeyed into the afterlife. He was closely linked to military conquests, believed to guide armies to victory by clearing their path. In the context of funerary rites, Wepwawet led the dead through the duat, the Egyptian underworld, ensuring their safe passage to the afterlife.
Wepwawet was occasionally syncretized with other deities, particularly Anubis. While Anubis was more specifically associated with the embalming process and the safeguarding of tombs, Wepwawet’s role as a guide and protector spanned both the battlefield and the afterlife.
