The Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), also known as the Pharaoh’s Chicken, is a medium-sized bird of prey renowned for its intelligence and adaptability. Found across Europe, Africa, and Asia, this vulture plays a vital role as a scavenger in its ecosystem. Adults are striking in appearance, with predominantly white plumage contrasting with black flight feathers, a bright yellow bare face, and a shaggy crest on the back of their head, giving them a regal look.
Measuring 47-65 cm in length with a wingspan of 1.6-1.7 meters, they are graceful in flight. Known for their cleverness, Egyptian Vultures are one of the few bird species to use tools. They have been observed cracking open tough eggs, such as ostrich eggs, by picking up stones and dropping them onto the shells-a remarkable display of problem-solving. Opportunistic feeders, they thrive on a diet that includes carrion, feces, insects, and scraps, earning their nickname “Pharaoh’s Chicken” due to their role in ancient Egypt as natural sanitizers.
These vultures inhabit open arid areas, savannas, and semi-deserts, and are highly migratory, wintering in warmer climates in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Sadly, they are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, with populations declining due to habitat loss, poisoning, and collisions with power lines.
